I study the future. We should pay attention to avatars | Sinead Bovell | TEDxRutgersCamden

As the world around us becomes more digitized, immersed and connected, the lines between what’s real and what’s not become more blurred-down to the models on our magazine covers and human-like avatars conducting corporate interviews. Sinead Bovell calls attention to Shudu Gram, a computer-generated and internationally-recognized South African woman model, who was created and monetized by a white male. She explains how new technologies may provide an opportunity to exploit people’s racial and gender identities, and what we can do to prevent it.
Sinead Bovell is a futurist and the founder WAYE, a tech education company that prepares youth for a future with advanced technologies. To date, Sinead has educated over 100,000 young entrepreneurs on the future of technology, and has spoken at world renowned institutions including the United Nations, Cornell University, and Bloomberg on the intersection of business, technology, and the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I would like to live in a society where a persons identity is not why we judge that person or their associations. To that end I'm glad this technology makes it harder to trust someone just because of their percieved identity.

This is a complex question and I appreciate it being raised. I do not, however, presume cross-anything avatars are therefore wrong or inappropriate. For example, I occasionally play a female character in online role playing games, and its been extremely instructive to see how I'm treated by different groups. Plus it just gives me a chance to express that side of myself. No, we don't want exploitation - but we do want self-expression of all aspects of who we are and awareness of how those aspects are received - or not - by others. Complex issue.

This was such a well reasoned and fascinating talk. As a longtime Second Life user who employs many different avatars, I found it especially interesting. I have never profited from my avatars’ appearances and have been honest when asked about who I am behind the avatar. But this raises questions about those who aim to deceive, appropriate, and misrepresent those cultures and I shall carry this forward in my thinking. Superbly done.

Well, I can understand that but using an Avatar who doesn't fully represent you, but something else to, or maybe something completely else is not nessecerilly a bad thing. Like the Model that was used as an example in the begining. There was no words about the intertions of the creator, just that they are a white male... Now what does that mean? Basicly nothing. But the fact is that the Model avatar supports diversity in fashion. That probably says more about the creator than him being male and white.

There is a duality in all of this, transparency would lend towards us knowing the profile of the creator/designer/owner of an avatar so as to give the power to the people. What are your thoughts?

Great topic. I predict that using an avatar's marketability will become a very standard and acceptable concept regardless of ethnicity, we see it a lot today too in art... video games... music? it will eventually stop being taken as cultural appropriation as avatar developers will be forced to diversify and be more versatile with their creations due to the backlashes of the issues spoken about here.

And of course, social constructs reinforce themselves in culture with the full weight of society. I mean, social is in the name. You can't escape social constructs that are applied to you. I don't blame anyone for attaching themselves to these constructs because clearly there's a lot of external pressures and solidarity attributed to them. (I had more to write that would have extended my point in a different direction, but i accidentally sent and then lost my train of thought. So instead let's just say I encourage respectful discussion on the matter. we all have countless blind spots, so true understanding has to be a team effort no matter what)

Not all computer science professionals and graphics artist who create avatars are "white men", BUT I totally agree there is cultural exploitation happening with how technology (some of which is avatar based) is used within advertising. Not paying actors, models, photographers etc etc is simply a business decision. How to control the the use of computer generated images is the big question, especially when it's impossible to tell if it is an actual person or an avatar. The world we live it gets progressively stranger by the day.

I never thought much of avatars, regardless of the exploitation angle. As with dark money entering politics (no thanks to the Supreme Court's 'Citizens United' verdict), the REAL identity person / entity / financial backing, should be public and transparent enough that the claimed identity can be verified as accurate and reasonably complete.

This is a Suttle way to slowly bring the truth to the general public, us, the people. They do it in micro doses. Think about what we have access to. You have the latest and greatest phones and electronics but the government and those in power knows this is old technology. What we get as new is tens years behind of what they are using and working on. Think about it. She talks avatars but how many of you realize there was no audience? If movies that look realistic are what we watch, how is this different? Yes the person speaking is well spoken and informed in a proper manner but you need to look passed that. Think outside the box. There are clones right? There are side by sides of CGI and real people and it's hard to determine which is real and which is not. I'm not here to argue with anyone, I'm just here to help you realize that just because are told sometimes doesn't mean there isn't a hidden agenda behind it. Remember 20 or so years ago and the cloned sheep, WTF have you heard lately? We have been groomed since birth to be naive in some sense, how you feel or what you want to believe is up to you but are you sure you are the one doing that or did social conditioning pursue you?

For someone who study’s the future you’ve missed the last 20 years. I learned very early on in chat rooms and the like that an avatar is merely the representation that person wishes to present to the world. I have to advocate for the possible positive this could represent rather than the dystopian future you are presenting here. Representation helps but it does not make the person achieve anything. Maybe the advent of avatars would help people look past the surface level differences like race. Yes it helps in some context but you can go deeper to the human being and I don’t see how perpetuating the old paradigms that aren’t working would help us use these avatars. Instead we should focus on inclusion and understanding individual differences be it at a cultural level or individual. You can’t make every company and every situation diverse to do this. You need to give people the tools to understand each other.

Sounds like proof that actions make a bigger difference than personal identification. Be yourself by acting like who you should be, not by simply existing. Existence isn’t unique, and there isn’t a single special thing about how, where, when, or under what circumstances you came to be. What matters is what you do now. The me it looks like this model is doing more with no existence than this futurist is with one. But I digress.

In your world, who gets to say: -What roles must an actor play? They're all "fake" btw, hence "acting". -Wich picture must anyone use as an avatar? They're all a graphic image of an "account", accounts are just digital data, not physical individuals, hence 1 person can have many accounts. -Why a photo must be "real" to pay for it? All are images; I like'em, I support the creator, even if it's using an AI or editor. If I take a pic, and use digital filters to get my teeth white, a tan and a square face I can't use it because it's not "real"? -It does not "take" business opportunities, it creates more. I can't modify my face easily to be "attractive" in certain groups, but If I can create an specific avatar, I can grow my social media business. You're scary imho, because idk if you realize it, but you're trying to make racial distinctions and privileges in digital files. They're just files, no race, gender, anything. Why bring that to a digital world? As a developer I can't fathom a day when I have to store files by race like a "mexican" (I'm mexican) document to give it a different treatment or check if It can use "compa" as an adjective. Why promote inequality to digital?!

I don't understand why we keep looking at technology and saying, "Look, this IS going to rule your life." Says who? We haven't agreed to live like this, and we don't have to. We CAN and should live our lives in real, physical spaces. We CAN have real, face to face relationships, and get our info from actual human beings in our own communities. Choose to live your lives. We have to stop relying on the internet for basic human functioning. Focus on your physical community. Go to live events. Shop local, utilize your library and the trained research professionals who work there. We do not have to he owned and controlled by the tech industry. We really don't. Live your real lives and all of this goes away. It's within our control to not be lazy, blind people who choose convenience over enlightenment at every turn. We don't have to he that, and we mustn't. All we have to do is participate in our own lives and we're free. Things won't be easier. But they will be better. "Easier" and "better" have never been synonymous.

This is ridiculous, I wonder how can someone come up with so much BS and racial obcessions like this person. These kind of people have no future in AI, AI will help humanity going forward and creating a balanced society, first understand AI and then talk about it! BTW, this video has 3K dislikes vs 2.2K likes (use a chrome extension to see deslikes).

We should pay attention to anime avatars. The people who use them are misrepresenting anime characters like Goku, and are able to exploit his ableism by doing so. 🤣 I get where she's going, but on an individual level this is cringe. You're attributing biased traits to an avatar that otherwise would not be in the minds of others. Your thoughts: 'She is a model that has the potential to be a super model and she lives in africa.' My thoughts: 'Pretty girl, I'll use her to represent me.'

"As a futurist". I find her so narrow minded and unidirectional that I am even offended she calls herself a "futurist"

I agree, futurists are visionaries by defenition, this woman i really myopic and over-focused ona tiny woke issue, thet's her lens for everything. It's total nonsense and I think shed be better suited to data entry over educated , creative thinking.

I think it's great to see people like her worry about this kind of stuff. I highly doubt this is the only thing going through here mind- opening insight to things people really don't think about... like when facebook sold data? thinking about things like this helps people expect what could be coming and avoid it or inspire its development even further.

Sadly, she wants her racialist, tribalist mentality to dominate our future. For humanity's sake, let's hope her obsession with artificial, unscientific racial classification does not shape our future.

Don't you think it's pretty pretentious to start your presentation by saying you study the future and in the same breath state, that if anyone claims to know about the future they should run..... maybe it's just me, but I predict people won't take you very serious... in the future.
