I so understand your complaint about the prices. It's the same for us Finns. But then, when you consider that these folk need to live on the income that they get in a few months, because there ain't nobody in for the tourism called how to survive being eaten by mosquitoes.

A few tips from a local. You can do this a little cheaper by renting an airbnb or a cheaper hotel room from the city. No need to use taxi unless you want to stay at the Santa's village very late. Public transport in Rovaniemi is not the best but during the day busses go from center to Santa's village at least once an hour and cost is about 3-5€ depending on how you pay (cash, bus app or the city bus card). The routes and timetables are online in English. The village itself is free to enter so you can enjoy the atmosphere and see Santa Claus for free if you don't want the video of your experience. Food is a bit cheaper in the city and of course there are grocery stores there. The city is full of walking routes that you can explore for free (we have the freedom to roam law so all forrests are okay to walk in) and if you have your own skies you can ski totally free as much as you want since there are at least couple of hundred kilometers of free ski routes all over the city. Free fire places are also available pretty close to the center and free ice rinks all over if you get skates from somewhere (cheap ones are about 20€ at stores). Also free play grounds for kids are everywhere, biggest is an Angry Birds play ground very close to the center where you can also slide a small hill if there is snow. Excursions are expensive everywhere. I have payed similar prises in Canary Isles and Turkey for trips to local farms, snorkeling or a tour to a local historical or natural site. But the northern lights and stars are free to watch if you go to a less lighted place on a clear night and look towards the North. For example somewhere around Ounasvaara hill area where there are walking routes and a free fire place on top (just don't walk on the ski routes, locals won't thank you for that). There is also an Arctic zoo (reindeers, moose, wolves, lynx, brown bears, polar bears etc.) in Ranua about 80km from the city and a public bus there and back costs about 30€ plus 22€ ticket for the zoo from an adult. There are couple of nice but not totally free museums in the city, a nice little church and a couple of cemeteries that look beautiful with all the candless in the dark around all saints day and Christmas eve and day. Rovaniemi is a pretty normal small city in Finland with a little twist from tourism, being a univercity city, and having the air force base that caused the flight noice, so you can do many other than chrismassy things too, like swim in the river in the summer, do many indoor sports, go to movies, pubs and night clubs etc. Reindeers can sometimes be seen loitering on the streets outside the imidiate city center, so they are not just a touristy thing eather.

True, I was in a Guest House in Rovaniemi for 70 euro, and from there with city bus 8 for 3.70 Euro. This is OK, but Finnland is very expencive, even Sweden and Germany are cheaper. These nights for €70 in Rovaniemi were booked 5 months in advance, with no cancellation option, with shared bathroom and toilet, no breakfast. In Luleå in a first-class hotel with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast, in the center of the city and near the sea, it cost me only 65 euros. In Kiruna, similar - a single room with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast included, with the option to cancel up to 3 days before arrival, cost me 60 euros. In Germany, the prices for overnight stays in hotels are similar, and overnight stays in guesthouses can be found for as little as 35 euros. Why is Finland so expencive by less salary than Sweden and Germany? Even food in Supermarkt in Rovaniemi is much expenciver than in Sweden and Germany.

As a Brit who's lived in Finland past 10 years, Tbh the pricing for those who live in Finland isn't unexpected because the living wage is better in Finland than England. You are paying for homemade crafts and real handknitted scarfs and hats etc, better quality. From the way most christmas themed parks etc are in world Lapland is the only place you get authentic and decent experience. Tbh they could charge alot more and get away with it. But overall experience it is worth it. As a foreigner only visiting ofcourse you will notice the price difference, But knowing what Finland is like they only really think of themselves so tbh be thankful they don't care about foreigners so much or they'd just charge you more lol

There was actually a media scandal here in the early 90s. They tested the tap water here against all big brands of bottled spring water. The tap water here was found to be much better quality than any bottled brand. If I remember correctly, it was Evian that was most peeved by this news. I know a wealthy gentleman who moved here from Switzerland. He bought a nice house, but it wasn't connected to the water mains - he only had a well in the garden (with pump to takje water inside). He felt unsure about this, so he sent a sample of the water to a top Swiss research facility for testing. As soon as they received the sample, they called him to ask where he got the water from, as they have never seen such good quality water - TRUE STORY! :)

May I remind you that Lapland is twice the size of Ireland. There's plenty of other options than this particular commercialized resort filled only by foreign tourists. My tip: Inari. A small little village/town with 1,500 residents and a real taste of indigenous Sami culture. Plenty of accommodations, good restaurants, Sami cultural sites and actual people living there. Also the best place/area for spotting northern lights.

You can visit Santa for free. We visit with my family every year. If you want photo/video, that cost 50 euro. And that is not per person. For whole group it's 50 euro. To be honest it's not really that expensive if you don't stay in the village in December. And anyways it's a once a lifetime experience.

Reindeer hides are pretty common here in northern scandinavia, and has been for a very long time. It's a byproduct of slaughtering them, and the price is actually reasonable. Better than throwing away parts of animal you could use.

Yes it makes sense to me to use all parts of the animal and not waste. Eat the meat and use the hide (and the other parts for other things).

You can never visit Santa often enough, although the reindeer sausages were a step too far for one of my daughters. The keyholes are great. Santa was fab when we went last Oct, and spoke to my Finnish granddaughter in Finnish, although she is fluent in English, and my English grandchildren in English. We still are talking about it now. Maybe we will go again with our youngest granddaughter next year. Never caught the northern lights yet. Such a fab experience. Unfortunately Finland is a very expensive place, but fortunately our family live only 3 hours away by bus. Have promised myself a visit to huskies and reindeer next time. The coldest temp we experienced was minus 23 back in Feb, but it never feels as cold as the uk.
