After about a year of taekwondo my kicks went from desktop mode to head reach (about 180-190), but that was also training 5-7 days a week, stretching, other martials arts like Muay Thai, lots of strength training for legs. Feeling so much more overall strength and fit. People underestimate the many different musclegroups in our legs I think. Even the small ones like hip-flexors make such a big difference in the daily life let alone high kicks or volume kicks and power.

The thing that worked for me after about a year and a half of not being able to kick head height was surprisingly not some fancy stretching routine it was just barbell squatting 6 days a week(for reference this is not heavy squatting 6 days a week I do 2 days heavy 2 days light and 2 days with no weight on the bar at all I just focus on form and I just do a 5x5 on heavy days and 3x12 on light/no weight days) squats take care of nearly every muscle in your leg and so they can work wonders as far as flexibility, strength and size goes.

I’m 6’7” so I thought that I didn’t need to learn high kicks because I didn’t have to kick “high” to kick heads. I was wrong. I wouldn’t kick high in fights mostly anyway but the ability is crucial for all kicks. And it’s good to have in my quiver anyway. My point is that I learned to kick my head height with speed, power and flexibility and that translates to all kicks. My lower kicks are now faster and more powerful and fluid because I trained high kicks.

Hey props to you, I’m quite a bit younger than you but my right hip does tend to lock or pop, while it’s typically not limiting my height in most cases it is still very uncomfortable and requires me to stretch or throw my hip backwards to reset it. To have such a limiting factor such as poor natural movement is no joke and is a serious concern specially with kicks. Good for you to overcome these barriers and make remarkable progress.

Hiza Geri, Muay Thai Spear Knee, or just raising the knee up exactly like you do it while chambering for your favorised Frontkick versions. It helps a lot and builds very fast the strength and endurance for raising the leg up..

@@metrolinamartialarts would not be a big problem if you do it slow and controlled, keeping the form. It is not about explosive movement, just a hack to train some strength for lifting up your leg. And you shouldn`t put as much weight as you can lift, but just as much as you can lift with clean 12-15 or more reps. I mean, yes, the use of ankle-and wristsweights is a bit problematic in Martial Arts, because many use these for speed training, with explosive moves, risking injuries of the joints and muscles. But it should actually be more like slow and safe weightlifting.

Holding a "big chest" rather than dropping your shoulders toward the target will give you more balance and a higher maximum angle for your abs to achieve. This will give you a better pelvic tilt, allow for more hip rotation and result in more power.

You need to be more optimistic about that left side roundhouse, it seemed like you were a bit disappointed at the amount of improvement, but just looking at the height itself isn't enough, you gained a couple inches of height, but you can definitely tell your hip flexibility and your angle changed dramatically. Went from going directly across/slightly upward, to having that hip turn over completely and having a slight downward angle as you connect. Even with whatever hip issues you struggle with, that's a nice kick.

if you'd chamber high, you'd kick higher, this sidekick kicking up from the ground is ok, but if going for height... my 2¢ Edit: You see how much higher your front kick is, your knee comes up to at least your sternum if not nipples. It can come up to your shoulder level, then you fire the kick.

Your concentrating too much on conditioning and not enough on form. Your side kick is almost a back kick which it can be but you should also have the ability to rotate your core to face the target. Conditioning is super important but if you just threw these kicks everyday you'd see improvement in your form. What I do is try the kick with every chamber. Like a side kick that started as a front kick like the Enter The Dragon warm-up. Watch his core and how bent he is pointing "Outside".

  • @metrolinamartialarts

Without conditioning, I wouldn't be able to throw these kicks at all. But I get what you're saying. I think this is the most negative comment you've posted, Ray. I hope everything is OK! Happy New Year.
