As someone who has coached Tracer players from silver to gm, there's something very simple that can be said that was never touched on, and is muuuch more important than target priority, cooldown management, aim, etc: 1. Slow down your gameplay by 30% 2. Always time your engages when your frontline is pushing 3. Never have players on either side of you (enemies and allies alike) 4. Don't chase kills (that jeopardize the 3 points above), only go for kills that are convenient. Harassment is your bread and butter value Reasoning: 1. By slowing down your gameplay, you get more time to acquire targets and track, because right now you're playing too quickly for your aim to follow, as well as your decisionmaking. Your pace of play is pushing your decisions into very poor risk/reward territory, and especially with Tracer you don't want to rely on high risk plays. You're a glass cannon. 2. Before you take fights, take a breather, find a good (hidden/unexpected) attack angle, look for your team, and push when they push. Do this literally every single fight. You never want to stay in fights prolonged and bleed resources, and pray your ability to get an elimination is what saves you. This is a bad habit, you don't want to rely on elims to bail you out of bad decisions and poor positioning. Work on timing and positioning first, then you can add going for elims on top once you master the basics. 3. Never have any players on either side of you. This is Tracer positioning 101. You always want to attack from an off angle, and that angle should ideally only expose you to one person at a time, so you know exactly where damage may come from and how to act accordingly, which by nature removes 90% of rng that is found in low ranks. Rng only exists where predicted damage and pathing exists, so if you position yourself outside of predicted damage zones (aka the straight los between both frontlines) then you naturally avoid random junkrat mines, Mei icicles, Hanzo arrows, Pharah rockets, etc. People don't spam damage and abilities in places they don't expect to take a fight. You need to fight from such a place. Effectively, this means you should ideally always attack from a 90 degree or 180 degree angle of the enemy you're engaging. NEVER front line. Not until you've reached Masters and understand the risk of doing so. Never fight in the middle of the enemy team, or in between two teams. 4. Chasing kills is simply not what Tracer is strong at. Too many ways to negate damage when you can't consistently hit 1-clips, and even in gm Tracers struggle with consistently doing this (also ofc scales with skill of the opponents). If you want to go for kills, then it should be because the opportunity presents itself - someone makes a mistake, or uses a key ability that would otherwise save them, or they're already low hp/being focused by a team mate. What you can instead do as regular consistent value, is bleeding the enemy players of their resources. Force Ana to use her nade defensively. Bypass the enemy Rein shield and rain bullets in his side, constantly be on the ass of the Junkrat so he can't just relax and spam away at your frontline while they're fighting, etc. And notice how I say "be on his ass". You don't want to take duels. That's not your job, especially at this elo. You want to take as many unfair fights as you possibly can, because that's what Tracer's kit allows you. You have quickly replenishing resources, high rate of dmg output - meaning you can quickly be anywhere around the enemy team at any time, and nobody can afford to chase you down. This is a massive freedom for you as a player, to constantly scout for unfair fights that are in your favor. Do this all the time, and you will see high consistent value come automatically. You have the aim and the processing speed to play at a much higher level than Bronze. And with some training and focus on the points above you could make it past gold or plat - and by then you might improve enough to go even further. The potential is there. But it requires discipline and a total restructure of your playstyle. The ball is in your court

@Sazerac I think it's simply a matter of a misunderstanding to be honest. What you read as "don't chase kills" isn't what I intend to describe. That can be on you, or it can be on me. But as I'm taking the role of "coach" in my initial comment, I will take this misunderstanding on me regardless, and I will address it. here: What I mean with "don't chase kills" is to not tunnel vision on killing enemies and chasing them at the detriment of your risk/reward potential. There tends to be a window of opportunity for when a potential for a kill has most value - and that is if the kill is possible before you deplete your primary resources (blinks and non-critical hp, and general enemy team awareness of you). After this point, is where your risk goes up exponentially for the reward you chase. You can even put it mathematically: If there is no risk to begin with, then you lose nothing by chasing because an exponential curve of zero is still zero. So like chasing a ball that tries to escape, or chase a Moira who faded out of the fight, that's all fine. But my focus on not chasing comes from the point of view that I am directing my advice to a Bronze player, not a high Diamond player. My goal is not to improve their SR a bit - no the goal for me is to fundamentally improve them as a player. This is why I want to teach them consistent value first, before they start dabbling with risk-based value. In order to prioritize what to chase and when, you first need to understand what type of value you're giving up on by chasing the enemy. Like with most of this player's engages where he chases enemies, he often gives up his good positioning, he gives up all of his resources, he gives up time (and thus timing by extend), and he gives up general awareness of his surroundings. So instead of telling him "improve your awareness, improve your positioning during fights, manage resources better", I would rather address the issue at its root: chasing kills (as a primary source of value). My intent is not to say chasing kills is bad. My point is that it shouldn't be the focus at this level of play, as more consistent and core value is lacking and that needs to be built up first, as a strong foundation for improving other more advanced gameplay aspects (and chasing kills is a more advanced concept). This is why coaching looks different depending on which player is receiving coaching. If I were to coach you, my takes would be very different and they would be specific to your playstyle, your base understanding of the game, and your general skill. You're not Bronze, so most of these things I mention are not suitable for you, because you've already built a strong foundation already. So what to you may seem senseless or downright counterintuitive, or "bad advice", is actually quite different for someone who plays at a much lower rating than you. Just like how you don't advice new Doomfist players to learn rollouts as the first thing they do, or which specific combos to use, or which targets to focus. You advice them on what the core strenghts of the hero are, and the risks. Then you drill it into their head with hours of playtime and reviews+feedback on how they're progressing. That's also often why when you want to improve at any given hero, often you risk seeing a dive in SR because typically people need to downgrade and backtrack a bit on their playstyle and approach, so they can build a stronger foundation and revert some bad habits - and THEN you see them improve on a much more potential-full path on which they can then rebuild their old skills, but with newfound understanding of why certain things work and others dont. Players generally don't benefit from just being told what to do and what not to do. They benefit from understanding why those conclusions are reached in the first place.

The speech about "perfect overwatch" expectations I think really hit me as a plat/diamond player. I've been stuck for years but granted Im not practicing like crazy amounts of comp but I watch more than I play atm and I think my expectations of players grouping up or waiting to stop staggering makes it so I tilt myself easier. In certain elos, "whatever happens happens" is not good enough. When the matchmaking system was broken at OW2's launch and it was either roll or be rolled you HAD to group up and stop stacking and feeding, and you still do to a lesser extent. Ult economy starts getting serious in Gold, and the amount of games I lost because my team's Orisa decided to go alone at the last point of Route 66 and giving ults to 2 or 3 enemies is too damn high.
