This review of Rivian is spot on. I think the cost/utility concerns that are part of the reason for selling it could have been thought through before buying the truck, but definitely agree with the experience good and bad. Another thing i'd want is more range when towing (probably via battery). I'm only 3 months into my R1T ownership with 4500 miles so far but using it for truck things like towing etc.

Branden, I just took a trip to San Diego and LA from Phoenix, I drive a Model Y and there is absolutely no range anxiety and plenty of chargers to choose from I could actually go on the car screen and change my charging stops based on the cost of charging., or if there was a wait (there was no wait for any chargers ) Tesla has added so many chargers and location since my last trip to California, it's amazing. I can't imagine doing that in any CCS car, It would be so frustrating, even in California. It was funny.. my son loves shopping so while we were at UTC mall in La Jolla, I popped into Polestar, where their salesperson basically said Polestar will need to add tesla chargers.. the CCS just isn't a great system right now. And the people at the VinFast Store were even better salespeople for Tesla

I don't think CCS protocol itself is the problem. I don't think the form factor is the problem. The problem is the CPOs and the implementation from the major manufacturers at the moment. I've never had an issue with plug and charge for EA or EVgo (after setting it up the first time). I think a lot of issues happen between the person actually activating the charger and then plugging in. It's a weird process and not ideal for most people. Tesla has had the benefit of a closed ecosystem. A lot easier to "just work" when you control the production from A to Z. The question still remains of "Will non-Tesla vehicles get the same "it just works" from Tesla Superchargers with the adapter that is going to be provided?" One would imagine we would, but it's not guaranteed. We'll have to wait to see what happens. Rivian seems dedicated to their network and if they had the means, I do believe they would have been a viable CCS CPO but it's just not there yet. And it's really best if we're all on the same plug anyways. Road tripping isn't nearly as bad as the horror stories scream. Certainly harder than a Tesla but you can do it.

Charging on a V3 supercharger you're only going to get 150kw tops. It just makes it far more reliable and more places that you can go without any worries. So CCS 350kw, or even the 150kw (that are actually 175kw and you can pull that much with this truck) will still still be the first choice.

You’re only speaking for current Magic Dock limitations. Superchargers can easily output more than Rivian’s 500A max input. Tesla’s CCS adapter (the reverse of Magic Dock for Teslas to use CCS) can easily do 500+A.

That was a great review. I have a question given your knowledge of version two versus version 3 Tesla superchargers. What is the ratio of installs of each and isn’t it true that version two’s are not liquid cooled therefore could have cable extensions, but also are subject to thermal derating because of the sensor in the handle that could affect charge times of a vehicle like your Rivian as you described at the end of this video❓ I too had a debt income ratio home loan purchase that kept me out of an EV purchase until that was all settled which I’m grateful to have behind me. Good luck with your purchase and maybe I can meet you sometime being a Charlotte Area resident with my 2023 IONIQ 5 AWD Limited. I too don’t need a truck often enough so chose a hatch/lift back. 1:08:18

  • @brandenflasch

Thank you! Tesla is only installing version 3 (with liquid cooled cables) and has only been installing V3 for about 3 years now and V4 (immersion liquid cooling and longer cables with centered charge post) installs should be starting quite soon. V2 (air cooled cables) are "legacy" sites. The "wet rag trick" works wonders on V2 Superchargers that derate due to handle temperature (it actually cools the handle and isn't just tricking the sensor) and I'm sure I'll be using that trick on road trips in my coming Tesla. Hope to see you around Charlotte! May need to hit you up if you're open to letting me film with your car - would be good to show my Tesla and the Ioniq 5 for a video and maybe some range / charge testing. "It is the best car I have ever owned" Is there an emoji for vomit? He now thinks he is a big time Hollywood producer all these youtube channel people get that Hollywood self importance so ridiculous. I hope the US gov't has a minimum time you must keep a vehicle after pocketing taxpayer $7500 He will have bought 5 in 2 years or $37.000. He drove 23,000 miles at 35 mph. His mileage was 230 watt hours. He should have done a run in Texas at their speed limits of 85mph and watched his range needle moving from 300 miles to 3 miles in a half hour. There is a german who does this on the autobahn. in his plaid. This is a flaw in BEVs that is a secret hidden better than Saddams WMDs. It is caused by eddy currents in the motor -- high rotational speeds turn it into a generator. Eddy current are actually employed to act as brakes on turning industrial machines. The axle and motor also spins very fast and heats up this is an energy sink as well. An ICE has none of these. An ice can cruise at 90 mph and use 25% more gas than cruising at 50 mph -- an EV requires almost 3 times as much energy as 90 mph vs 50mph.
