I SNAPPED MY £6000 CARBON ROAD BIKE!

Спорт

EPISODE #125
What started out as a wonderful ride takes a very sour turn for the worst. I finally get out to start exploring the beautiful roads of Portugal, and I take in some of the local sights. It was all going great.
But then I get dealt a pretty bad bit of luck to say the least. And on more than one occasion also... the worst of it all, just to finish off a horrendous turn of events, my Trek Emonda frame is now snapped. An absolute kick to the stomach whist I'm already down... but you know what they say, it can only be up from here. Surely.

Oh Thomas, my heart goes out to you bro. And stop being so hard on yourself! There's often invisible damage internally after impact, there's no way you'd have known. In my experience, warrenty just immediately replaces after impact, they don't want to take the risk. You're no idiot bro, you're a legend for battling on. Wishing you some better luck soon ❤️💛💚🔥🙏🏼

Lucky you didn’t have a catastrophic failure whilst riding. I really know what you’re going through. My wife and I moved out from the UK to California some 27 years ago. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong. We didn’t really consider giving up but I imagine a lot of people would have. It’s a long story but basically we stuck it out and it turned out to be the best thing we ever did and we are still here. Stick with it mate. Things will get better. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the bike frame being damaged, you're spot on about the small crack in the composite opening up on the ride. To cut you some slack, there's a reasonably good chance that you wouldn't have been able to see the crack when you checked the bike over, but the cracks then opened up when you rode it. As you say, you were lucky enough to find the cracks when you got home. That's way better than 'finding' the crack when the frame fails while you're going downhill! The way composite panels get damaged from impacts, it's the other side of the composite which suffers most. There's a science behind it if you're interested, Google "Impact composite damage" if you're curious. There's some nice images on there which show what happens. Keep your chin up Tiger! It'll get better from here!

Hypertrophy of the left side and quite a bit of lost function. I'm hopeful that ill return to form after some time, and the same for your frame.

Sorry to see the way things are rolling at the moment, it will get better. I moved to the Austrian Alps 10 years ago. Although tempted i would never trust carbon frames here, particularly when unseen damage can be life threatening at 100kmh descents. Try top end steel or titanium, might just be a life saver and you may actually prefer the qualities and most certainly the looks!

@@TheCyclingTattooist yeah I must say they are not the cheapest, I have one through work and it’s great for throwing bikes and room for the kids. You looking at practical cars/vans! Showing your age now 😂 but you’re right that you need something that you can both use. Great that Team Cycles are getting you a new bike, that’s fantastic news, what a fantastic sponsor you have in them 👍🏼
