Battle Aces is a new real-time strategy game by Uncapped Games that has been in development for several years. Earlier this year the development studio flew me out to Los Angeles to give it a try and give my personal opinion. Battle Aces is a fast paced and action-oriented real time strategy game where you defend your base, advance your tech and attack the enemy's core.

Don't worry Lowko we won't tell Starcraft 2 you're playing BattleAces on the side.
I heard Jesse Cox recently complaining that he wants to play rts games to see the big cool units blowing each other up, but he doesn't like how most matches only last long enough to use the most basic units. So this seems to be moving in the right direction for accessibility of new players.
this game is awesome, you are telling me i can excuse my bad moves via decks and my macro is not my fault? i love it

I would argue that it's mostly because Blizzard's neglect of SC2. That opened the window for things like AoE4 and CoH3 to try to challenge it (even though they didn't exactly succeed in that regard) and no we are additionally seeing the wave of new games from Ex-Blizzard (Read: Ex-SC2) Developer teams that have been working on their own games since they left/were let go by Blizzard and are now ready to show their product to the world. The mostly failure of AoE4 and CoH3 to truly challenge SC2 in turn opened the opportunity for Indie teams to truly shine and challenge the big guys - think games like D.O.R.F., Manor Lords, Falling Frontier etc. Also at some point Homeworld 3 and SoaSE II joined the mix. TLDR: SC2 had to "die" for the RTS genre to be reinvigorated.

Moba-RTS vibes actually sound really cool to me! Watching the customizable decks makes me crave a roguelike single player mode where you can unlock wacky comps, synergies, and upgrades. This game feels like a genre-mix that could catch on with lots of people, even if they've never played an RTS!
i wonder how it would be like if there was best of 3 each taking up 10 minutes and between rounds each player can change one card, but i guess then each game would be too long.
god i want to play this so bad, i love sc2 but i dont wanna get back into it and learn a ton of build orders ect, this looks like it hits the perfect spot for me
This actually looks really neat. Hope there is an early access for it so more people can try it out and spread the word.

Agreed. Although I love watching SC2, I just don't have the will or time to actually play it 1v1. This? I could see it for sure. Get in, and blow some robots up for 10 minutes, no prolonged training necessary. Sure, I'll suck, but I can fight and win or lose and each game will cost me a maximum of 10 minutes.
This is the first game that's come along in recent times that's made me rethink the RTS genre as a whole. I'll be honest I thought RTS was dying at one point due to it being seen as niche with a core group of dedicated players but this kind of innovation could be just what it needs to appeal to the masses as well as provide a great challenge for RTS veterans alike. Definitely going to follow this one. Great vid! subbed
Game looks really fun! The focus on army control and personalized unit rosters seems like it will be very fun for casual players.
This looks fun. The older I get, the less I want to invest in learning complex games. This looks like it would be easy to start playing without that investment. I'm looking forward to it.

I guess the competitive format for this game would be a best of 5 or best of 6. I love the concept of this game, easy to get into, immediate action, lots of micro (my type). I like that I don't have to spend hours learning the game and practicing build orders like StarCraft. And the fact each match has a limit of 10 minutes, so even if I lose, I won't feel I wasted too much time and would be more willing to play again. This is already more appealing than Stormgate to me. I think if Riot Games made an RTS, it would be exactly like this, except each unit would have more personality.

@@Ghostel3591 its a good game been playing heaps. 100% worth every RTS gamer's time!
I think what Starcraft II really excels at is that it has something kind of for everyone. It's great graphics (especially for when it released) and it still looks really good today as RTS doesn't really need high fidelity on things. The animations and fights are impactful and satisfying to watch. On the non-casual side, units are probably the most responsive out of any RTS on the market today, it's fast paced but strategy and build orders still play a huge role. The majority of players are casual (myself included for the most part) and they did amazing on the campaigns, AI and then even added in special progression and missions to comp stomps with the Co-op mode that can get very hard if you stack brutal modifiers. A lot of people just think of it as having pro appeal but honestly, Starcraft II has managed to appeal to both pro and casual crowds. The campaigns on top of having unique objectives, had very well done cutscenes and added in dialogue between missions that just fit in well and made you care more about the events going on (maybe overall story could be improved but still). When you really think about it, it's not that surprising SCII still remains near the top for RTS. It had a large amount of money and many years of well placed effort put into it and the only thing really aged on it could be the graphics yet the game really doesn't suffer because of that. I always end up coming back and replaying the campaigns at some point. Most the time it's after trying a newer RTS and wanting to play one, but just going back to "old faithful".
Thanks for the video, Lowko. A pleasure as always to watch.
Footman Frenzy!
that ping sounded like it came from behind me
it's like Heroes of the Storm to League of Legends, Heroes was a faster paced game similar to League with more variants on completion criteria or side quest boosts you had to fight for to gain advantages, and League is a long drawn out build up just like Starcraft is. So you have your long haul strategy game and then you have the fast pace instant gratification games to appease the people with no patience for such things
Can’t wait for new rts I love StarCraft but I like verity :)
Seems somewhere between StarCraft and Clash Royale, it's definitely a more interesting and low-stress premise than all the StarCraft clones.
I feel like trying to make yet another competitive RTS is doomed for failure. It feels to me like every new RTS tries to be competitive and I think that was the nail to the coffin in the RTS genre. At the dusk of the era, after SC2 came out, every new RTS had to be competitive to get a piece of the cake. Except they could never wrest the crown from SC. Without that all the pro gamers would not switch and without the Pro scene migrating in - a competitive RTS is doomed for failure. What a successful RTS needs is not beating Starcraft at being an E-sport. It needs to appeal to the casuals. People playing custom modes. People simply having fun. It needs to have a simple to use yet powerful map editor and fun gameplay. It doesn't even need to be perfectly balanced as long as you can have fun. When RTS genre was at its peak, it wasn't because of the pro scene. Vast majority of RTS players didn't even know it existed. Now those people are older and even less likely to try playing competitively.

I think this RTS very much caters to the casuals. I could never see myself getting into a game like SCII, but i could see myself playing this game. Easy to pick up with a nice learning curve. And its quick, so you can play a couple of games when you have a few minutes.

I generally agree especially looking at previous efforts but the fact a game of Battle Aces can be played within a 10 min session yet allow for high level play is going to be very appealing to a lot of people who normally wouldn't consider playing a traditional RTS game. I'm interested to see what the overall response will be to this game on release. As long as it doesn't have predatory monetisation I can see it doing very well indeed.

Dumbing down is not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t understand the current negativity from elitist people. Original Age of Empires didn't have the attack move command. Brood War allowed only 12 unit selections. Do we go back to those days because we hate dumbing down at all? Hell no. SC2 is fun even though it is a "dumbed down" RTS by having a-move and inifinate unit selections. I am positive about the future of Battle Aces.

I think the next big RTS won't be StarCraft 3, but Warcraft 4. StarCraft 2 fills the niche so well it's near impossible to displace, and while I love Warcraft 3, it's far from perfect. It's a behemoth of an IP if Blizzard actually uses it, and still a nice change of setting if another developer makes a clone instead.
Huh, neat. Wishlisted.

It was 15 years ago, so market might have changed, but abandoning base building in Dawn of War 2 was the reason why community split and many original players disliked it even though game was good on its own, just different type focusing more on individual units/squads instead of classical RTS approach.
I call it a light rts, it has about half the amount of complexity of games like sc2 and aoe4 without taking away from the core idea of it being an rts.

I agree it could be seen as an RTS-lite game compared with traditional RTS but then the actual micro possible looks like it can allow for some high level play but in a much shorter session. Something I wouldn't have considered possible in the past. I'm excited to see how the RTS community as a whole reacts to this game on release.
out of the 3 games, this one looks the most fun to play, but also maybe a bit braindead. Zerospace looks more strategic, and Stormgate...honestly wouldn't care about it if i didn't know who was making it. And you are exactly right on the difficulty. I'm not a "casual" player - I just got to Malenia in Elden Ring and I've played games for about 20 years. And I like Starcraft and Tekken a lot gameplay wise. But everytime I hop on it's just frustrating to get demolished and it feels like there is nothing you can do but practice 8 hours a day, otherwise you can't enjoy a fair fight where you're in the state of flow. And if i'm going to game 8 hours a day I'd rather play something fun or where I get progression instead of MMR that doesn't do anything because, like you said, I'm never going to beat Serral or Arslan Ash anyway. For those who are more about "fun" and "playfulness" than "competition" and "domination" our multiplayer games need to be a little more welcoming or we'll stop playing them EVEN IF WE REALLY LIKE THE GAME ITSELF. Titanfall 2 is a great example of multiplayer because you have a big skill ceiling, but because you respawn so fast when you die, losing doesn't feel so bad. You get to enjoy the game even if you're bad.
problem with this is i can't watch tourney games in x2 speed.
I think if they keep this simple, throughout its lifespan, it'll be easiest to balance. If they keep the focus on simple mechanics, they'd also be able to avoid the pitfalls of greeding innovation and introducing unnecessary complications.

It's an interesting concept, but I also kind of hate it. The cut off features like building and extensive macro options and quick matches will no doubt be appealing to current generation of players, but I also dislike that there is almost no strategy and the ongoing trend of making things more and more braindead. Not that my opinion matters though, I don't play any RTS PvP, I just like to watch pros.

@@Corusame no-no-no, you're missreading my point. It is not that it is bad but that it will focus only on ONE aspect. With such approach you can make a Good Game but not a Long Lived one. It will not be another legendary RTS with ability to pull DIFFERENT types of players - a game like SC2 that will be able to pull Casual player with single player campaign then he tries ladder and gets into it... Or competitive player tries that custom map with mod making tools and now he is one more person pushing the rising popularity of a map, soon to be remade into a standalone game. Even DOTA2 that grew up from Warcraft 3 DOTA which itself came from Starcraft 1 Aeon of Strife map - by the merit of having modding tools created a whole AUTOCHESS game genre. This? This will be just another case of focus on a competitive mode only making it a niche game with a Limited timespan SEVERELY dependent on developer's support. Once its gone... It will not persevere like Warcraft 3, Starcraft, CnC etc etc games... I'm still baffled by the fact that new rts devs keep saying how difficult rts' are and how diffcult it is to get into them, so they need to dumb it down so much, while pretty much every other competitive game that is very popular are faaaaaaaar more complex then sc2, just look at dota or league, they have so many heroes, items, weird mechanics and objectives that are toatlly unintuitive, yet both are far more popular then sc2. When i started dota 2 and watched some tourials and beginner guides, they usually were like 2-8 hours long. Yet dota has like a 10 times bigger playerbase, so how the hell does that make any sense? why is it that sc2 is small because its too difficult adn the barrier to entry is to big, while a game that has literally a 100 times bigger barrier to entry so much more popluar. David Kim is 10000% wrong on why rts' fail and that makes me belive that he will probably fail as well
