I screwed up big time. Broken and stuck alone in the mountains

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I took my Jeep out to the mountains to film a video about how to survive overnight in a snowstorm in your vehicle with minimal supplies, but along the way I got stuck in the snow and broke my transfer case. Now that I was stuck in 2wd I decided to play it safe and abandon my plan to stay in the woods during a snow storm, and instead used my ‪@harborfreight‬ Badlands Apex winch to pull myself out and get headed down the mountain

    The ironic thing is Casey... You Actually did make a "if you're stranded and broke down " video. I personally have done what you did, but instead of doing the Smart thing and trying to get back when things went sideways...I stayed and continued...which made Everything Worse. Stuck in the mountains, by myself, no one knew Where I was, no way to communicate, and I didn't have a spare tire or fuel. I wound up having to hike several miles in the dark, with a rifle slung, in the winter time, to the first house I came across. Fortunately I did make back to the base I was stationed at (Fairchild)...5am. Friends help me get my rig back the following day

One curve to many and your done. It happens. Most people feel bad enough just let it be and enjoy the video. Learn things of what not to do or what to do. Keep up the good work Casey.

    Awesome 👍😎 video. Not being full-blown mechanic or anything I always learn a lot from you! I love it when I see people out in the woods just having fun trying their best with what they have. Thank you so much Casey for your comments. Once in college I went elk hunting with a friend overnight. We camped by a river the fog rolled in that morning and as luck would have it we ended up taking a young bull elk! When we were trying to break it down to get it into the vehicle my Saw broke so we couldn't break it all down. Finally got myself my buddy all of our camping gear and supplies and the Bull elk in our vehicle. When we pulled into the butcher shop, we got in line with all the big rigs and outfits and the butcher came out and saw our vehicle with the Bull elk looking at him through the front seat passenger window, He whooped and he hollered slapping his leg, "If that ain't the most huntinest vehicle I've ever seen!" It was a 75 manual Toyota Corolla. I could get all five gears but I had to reach up underneath the rib cage to shift. We drove that thing bottomed out for 2 hours back to the butcher shop the Bull elk looking out the window at everyone people were laughing and giving us a thumbs up. My buddy? He was smaller than I was lean and mean and we had a small cubicle behind my seat for him to sit. The Bull road shotgun.

    2nd the mat. I keep about 2 or 3 of those lego mats with me when helping others or doing work on my vehicles. Not only does it help with the dirt and grime, but it also helps tremendously with sliding around underneath. Sliding around on dirt, rock, uneven/jagged surfaces really hinders. They also help tremendously with doubling them up and having something to kneel on for wheel-end work. Love them for that!

    Dang, you've got a long bracket with a hydraulic ram pushing on it. That's a lot of leverage to break things! Is there any way to strengthen the bracket so it's stronger than the ram? Loved the escape. It was a nice ride-along until my next wheeling adventure.

  • @Dave-ei7kk

    @Dave-ei7kk

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’m afraid that if he strengthens the bracket more the failure will just move to the next weakest point which is the truck frame. He said it was a unibody frame in the video and if it is that’s generally even weaker than a normal truck body on “ladder” frame design. What would make more sense would be to put an over pressure relief bypass valve on the hydraulic circuit feeding the hydraulic cylinder so that the fluid couldn’t build up past a certain pressure without being bypassed around the cylinder to the return port. May require two valves unless someone makes one that is unidirectional.

    Casey everyone make mistakes and getting stuck you got out. I thought I was hard on trucks, but you top that and you have fun doing it. As far as negative people they like to stir the pot, and you have a choice of dumping the pot out and move on. And you do be happy and I am glad your safe. Blessings

    Great video ! So not a video about how to survive a night ? But an excellent example of why the winch is your friend for self rescue. I've been in SAR in the mountains for 30yrs and I appreciate that you are educating folks on being prepared .

    Mistakes happen. Keeping your head on tight and doing what you know how to do gets you out of trouble. If you can't get going you know you can call for help. Well done. You do have the most. Beautiful office in these United States that I have seen.

    Casey, nice video with good, useful information that was educational and thus potentially helpful to others. Your winching, showing/explaining the damage to your rig, your "emergency" driving and commentary and at the end your tire air-up setup (the tank...what gas is it?, hose, couplers, valve and guage setup) likely gave others some ideas they can use while you entertained them on your channel...win, win. Keep up the good work and good content brother.
