I Screwed Up As A Porsche Owner. Here’s The Big Mistake I Made...and How To Avoid It.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I made a huge mistake selling my Porsche 911 991.2 Carrera S...and thank God I figured that out. Good news is it all worked out...but it's a crazy story.

I think the only real lesson here is that guys who don't stay happy with cars long term, don't stay happy with cars long term. What are the odds this 991.2 is still around in five years or 10 years? Slim, I'd say. I personally think pretty much everyone would actually be happier changing cars far less often. So many people are like this channel, constantly chasing the next thing. And as soon as they get it, they're almost immediately thinking what's next. It's analogous to mindfulness or lack thereof. I'm prone to it myself to an extent, and what I have noticed is that when my circumstances have made it so that my options for changing up are limited, I'm much better at focussing on what I have and enjoying it. When my circumstances give me more options, sure I enjoy planning the next P car and going after it. But it's a much more superficial enjoyment compared to really getting into tune with a car. My plan is now to stick with the P car I have as the last one and then dabble in some other low cost stuff, buying a car to share with a friend, keeping it for a bit and trying something else. Then you get to do that chasing thing and planning the next car, but without it taking over and without it being a status thing.

I love this! I had a 997.2 gt3 back in 2014.. Had to sell to pay my taxes.. Regretted immensely. Then in 2018, when I could I chased down a 997.2 rs and I'm so in love with it.. Keeper for sure.. Still track it too. Added a 993 turbo last year.. That was my childhood room poster.

Excellent video, Will! I always find myself wondering if there isn’t always a better Porsche out there than the ones in the garage. After I buy one, I love it and start looking for the next one. I cannot quite bring myself to sell any of them. They each have something different to bring. You comment about your mindset shifting after purchasing one and impacting your subsequent decisions is so true! I am finding myself eyeing a Targa wide body from the 80’s lately after getting a 992 Targa 4 GTS w/ 6MT. Would be nice to have one old and one new.

Custom ordered a first year 991.2 C2s back in 2016. PDK with RAS and all the other handling goodies. Still have the car with no plans to sell it. The car ticks all the boxes for me. The big appeal of the car for me is handling over outright power, so I have no interest in more power. That said, I test drove a 991.1 Carrera 4 and found that car sorely lacking in power. I had enough power with the last Ducati Panigale V4s I had. That bike was crazy fast and I sold it to avoid jail time;) Good luck with your 991.2!

I ended up down a different line. I bought a 992.1 T without RAS and love it. Initially was looking at a 991.2 Touring but realised it felt too old on the interior. I wanted a modern car I could tour with but enjoy daily and the 992 T in manual really has more comforts to it that make it different to my 964 and 993 which give me the back to bones simplicity. Also for the more raw experience I chose to compliment the T with a GT4RS for the raw track work. As for T versus S, I want a less powerful engine as I like to rev out my cars given my love of the older air cooled cars. An S or a Touring which I was looking at just didnt allow me to press on the throttle as long which I like to do.

Nice vid on this Will! I’m still in love with my 2024 992 GTS in Shark with the aero kit. Recently drove my friends 992 T. In comparison to the GTS it was way under powered. And they had the perfect opportunity with the 992.2 to do something about it and go back to the simpler, traditional handles and didn't. Amazing. Must have been corporate pride-ego prevailed, just like the PDK shaver nubbin gear shift--both of these features the answer to the question that no one asked--couldn't admit the mistake in the first place to change it.

Great video...long time multiple 911 owner here...of all "modern" water cooled 911's, the 991.2 is by far the most desirable. You could argue the 991.1, still being normally aspirated is more pure, but I much prefer the aesthetics of the 991.2 (not to mention the performance), even when compared to the 992. Value retention seems to be strong too, especially considering 991.1s are now dropping rapidly. The peak modern 911, for me, is the 991.2 GTS. If you have a 993, a 3.2, and a pre-'74 car, keep them forever, but if you made the jump into the 992 and have regrets (like I did) there's no shame in the 991.2 whatsoever, as I feel it's the overall "better" car....glad you're now content, as you should be!

Will: Yes, 992.1door handles are unnecessarily complicated. Look cool, but you have to be careful when you pull up on them. Sensors pick up presence of key fob so you can approach and open doors without hitting unlock button. Had my 2025 992.1 GTS out for a morning run today. Seven speed with PSE is awesome in this car. I also like the RAS, so differ with you there. Do agree that 992.1 is too tech heavy and 981/991 series has a nicer blend of tech and simplicity. Like the 991.2 styling as well. Keep the great videos coming!

The. 2 is the perfect balance on old & new for me. Having purchased >70 cars in my lifetime (no more than 3 at one time, not a collector), I think I'm probably done. And that's a good thing. 😅

Good video! I plan on getting a 991.2 (and still hold on to my beloved NSX) and will consider the base Carrera. Saw two older videos of back to back base vs S comparison. The base engine with the smaller turbos has much better throttle response with the S exhibiting some lag and then the power rush. I’d probably opt for a tune on the base engine while keeping the better throttle response. Also, the sport exhuast sounds goot but I dislike the crackles. They annoy me to no end hearing it every gear change. Sounds like the exhuast is broken with inner baffles rattling loose inside. I prefer the stock exhaust and that is another reason for going with the base as well. A delaer near me (NorCal) orders unique 911s and when looking at hte 991.2 back then, they had a zero option 4S and a zero option base. That’s what I’m looing for. A purist 911. I watch Nick Murray on his channel who’s owned two 991s. His opinion is less is more with the 911 and I can understand why. It will be hard to find a base nearly zero option 991.2 but hoping to find one when I start looking into getting into one soon.

Also a shot shooting directly down at the vehilcle, starting 10ft altitude. Then increase altitude keeping car dead center of the shot. What is the camera and lens you use on yourself driving? The one car that I've owned from the beginning and will never sell is my 986 Boxster S. And I still have a 993 C2. Both are keepers. Not for sale. Anything newer just doesn't do it for me anymore. I've got an allocation for a 992.2 GT3 coming, but it will not be at the expense of selling either of those cars. How long do I keep the new GT3? Time will tell. Enjoy your 991.1 S. Looks sharp. How would you compare the stock manual in your 991.2 and the 992? I ask because I owned a 991.1 Carrera S with the manual transmission and to be honest I found it very disappointing, in comparison the manual in a ND Miata or a Civic SI was way better than the 991.1. I heard the 992 manual was much improved over the 991. What I don't know is if the 991.2 was any better than the 991.1. Seems like the short shift kit you installed is a must.

I found nothing wrong in your video. I remember once i readed about Ferry Porsche saying “Always the newest the best.” I instantly felt disagreeing with that statement even if it’s came from the creator of the car. I’m a huge turbo 911 fan and my garage probably would look like this: 1986 930 turbo with Ruf upgrades , 993 turbo also with Ruf upgrades and a 997.2 turbo with manual transmission which is a rare option. I also like 997 Gt3 RS 4.0 in white on white wheels and the 991 R. The 992 is looking great but sadly no Turbo model with the manual transmission. I don’t find the new pop out door handles more problematic then what is on the previous models. If the door mechanism is failing it doesn’t matter if it’s sticks out or pops out since it’s a complete module. It’s more about aerodynamics and looks. I’m glad you were able to reunite with your car. That’s probably shows you should never sell it again even if you have a constant itching for experiencing other cars.

997.1 is the woest gen 911 there is. Bubble blob style design caught in the middle of the sleek 996 and the proper 991. Interior is by far the busiest and worst design out of all the 911’s. It’s slow etc. 997.2 gets a little better. And yes he owned all of the in basic and GT form. If you are trying to ball on a budget get an early build 996 over the 997 bore score and 7 years ago. Have you ever thought of trying something else? I'm thinking instead of a 718 Cayman GT-4, a Lotus Exige. The Lotus is much more focused on handling, performance and of course lightness. It is not focused on entry/exit comfort. Having owned an Elise, I always found the 3 hour drive to Lime Rock to be quite comfortable. Yes, you can learn to enter/exit without looking like Jeremy Clarkson. While different 911's are different, there are good, different cars that are not Porsche. Oh, and with the Toyota drivetrain, a major mechanical issue in a modern Lotus costs less than a periodic general maintenance in a 911 and parts can be had from your local Toyota dealer.

Lotus doesn’t have the same appeal for me other than maybe the Evora now. I love Porsche but respect your choice in wanting something different. I say this cause I drive have an M2 Comp, S2000, Boxster 25th, and Miata RF Club. All different driving experiences but ultimately the 911 would be amazing to own and drive.

The 991 will go down as the best/most desirable of the water-cooled 911 generations... JMHO. The only debates that will never be settled is whether the traditional N/A nature of the 991.1 is favorable to the performance benefits of the turbo 991.2... or whether the traditional 7spd is favorable to the PDK... or whether the S is worth the extra cost versus the base Carrera. But all of those conversations are just Rolex versus Omega, versus Tudor... There is never a right answer when it comes to personal choices...

992 is not a good gen, not one person prefers it over the 991.2. All the owners will claim steering feel lol. With that said the 992.2 will likely be worse than the 992. All of this makes my 991.2 gt3 touring perhaps the sweet spot. Built at a time when the economy was flying high and before porsche got the itch for digital and even more electronics. Paired with my McLaren 675 LT which has way better steering then the 992, I’m a happy man
