I think that vegetable oils “polymerize” more easily. They absorb oxygen and harden like boiled linseed oil, and the pump leather will lose flexibility.

A bit late, but wanted to inform ya if you haven't already found out. I have a 508 since brand new in the 80's as a teen. The 508 is supposed to stay on high during lighting and for 30 sec-1 min. That warms the generator and gets it to settle down quite quickly. That is one bulletproof and very good stove that has survived teen boys spending multi week trips on the AT numerous times.

@@EmbarkWithMark You knew it, but you didn't do it, then acted like the stove took some time to warm up. Jacking with the control/cleaning lever is what made it take so long. Don't do that. The instant light feature depends on high velocity air going by the fuel pickup. Playing with the cleaning/control lever slows that down, which means more liquid and less air and longer starting times. Once it's burning clean, use that lever til the cows come home and simmer away, but not during startup. That's a great stove. Enjoy it.

Agree. Only use veg based oil in emergency. Use motor oil from your dipstick before using veg oil. If you do use veg, when you get done with your adventure, remove the pump, fill the pump tube with clean fuel or carb cleaner until nearly full, loosen the filler cap and pump a couple of tubes through it, drain the tank, re-oil the leather and rest easy knowing it'll be ready for battle when you next need it.

Turn off the background music. It is beyond me why KZread content creators think playing background music over their voice is somehow enhancing their videos, it is not, it is distracting. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes extremely annoying and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.

Engine oil might last longer than vegetable oil, but the leather Cup itself won't. Many oils will break down the leather. The best oil to use, and the one that was recommended by Coleman is neatsfoot oil. It will help the leather last the longest.

@@mikemorgan5015The problem with this is just terminology as I found out digging through the technical datasheets. I live in Europe and there is no such a thing called naphta available. What's even more confusing is that White gas is a different substance here compared to US. White gas in US is the same substance as a technical grade gasoline here in Europe. It has no additives compared to let's say Natural 95 or 98 you can buy at a gas station. How much oil need to be in the pump? And what kind of oil? I put 6 drops of gun oil before i thought about asking on here lol. I just bought a 508 today for $40 with the case, looks like a 1990 model. Had to tighten a loose hose and put a new screw under the burner and got it running ok. Im cleaning the burner tomorrow in hopes if it cranking. The burner has some rust on it so i wiil clean it up, lube the pump with the right oil and see what happens. Mine has a rubber pump backed with a white plastic washer. Feels like black rubber not leather or plastic?? Its working now lol. But i want a leather one for sure.

Gun oil will work just fine! Motor oil is the one of the most common and recommended oils to use. Basically degrading oil (food oil) is the only one to avoid. But even it works in a pinch. Just sling some oil in there enough to coat the walls of the pump tube and soak the pump cup. It's hard to overdo the oil because if you do too much it will just push past the valve into the tank to be burned or seep out the top. Both are non issues.
