@@ValentynGaming I own a lot of PS4 physical media. So if I own a physical PS4 game do I need to download a PS5 version or does it install from the PS4 disc?

I chose the digital, and have no regrets. I haven’t bought a disc since 2018-2019, everything digital. You see I used to be one of those “physical disc” only people, totally against digital for the reasons you stated. But the convenience of being able to sit down and have my whole collection at my finger tips is priceless. I also don’t have to worry about discs and or cases. You made an argument that the disc are better because they are physical, like you can put ‘em in the system and they’ll just play the game. Things used to be like that, but not anymore. When you put in a disc now a days, you need an update or are required to download whatever the disc is lacking. I don’t imagine that will stop anytime soon, if anything its gotten worse over the years. Going digital also saves me money because I’m not buying games just cause they’re cheap or on sale and never playing them. I had so many games still in wrappers, untouched. So sure I miss out on some great physical sales, but I buy during psn sales to mitigate my losses. As I’ve gotten older and wiser my needs have changed, I now value convenience cause time is what I have least of.

@@chrislionheart3087 not the only reason, you can’t loose or damage your discs, you also don’t have to worry about space requirements for storing games, game sharing and being able to play two copies at the time time, then there is also also disc rot… so there are other reasons as well to go digital. If you wait for PSN sales the price difference is at as noticeable and in some cases the games are actually cheaper than physical. Example Plague Tale is on sale for $20 physically but $10 on PSN

@@Keabrown79 if people get disc rot then they need to look after there stuff better. I have games and consoles dating back to the ps1 a single ps1 game has not ever got disc rot. And i buy the expensive steelbook editions and collectibles statues that come with it that you can display but you don't get that with digitals so $150 digital versions only gets cosmetic crap. And not every country has interned good enough for digitals/streaming

You have given me alot to thinik about! I had planned to get the Digital version, as you mentioned, because of price. However, when coupled with the other factors you mentioned here, I'm now seeing I may not get ANY actual price break over the life of the console. Thanks for sharing your views.

I had the digital edition first and then sold it and got the disc edition. The disc edition gives you options. It gives you everything the digital version gives you plus allowing you to find deals on disc games. It helps me being someone that buys a lot of sports games that come out every year. At least when the new version comes out I can sell it myself or trade it in for a discount on the new version. Instead of letting sports games just add up never to be played again. So it does give you options. Yes there are good deals on PS store, but having disc edition gives you flexibility to find the best deals on games. Great video!

Thanks for the video man. You really hit the nail on the head. I've actually preordered the digital version. But I kind of presumed that, like in the past, digital copies would be CHEAPER than physical copies. Until I started looking on the PlayStation store. Then I saw your video after I made the discovery myself. If they don't have any cancelled Disc Editions when I pick my console up, at least when I change games on my PS5, at least I don't have to swap discs. Anyway bro, awesome video!

The issue with price of games in the store is only an issue if you want to buy them day 1. If you're patient, just put it on your wishlist and buy them when they're discounted. I exclusively buy digitally since the PS4 and I've never paid more than 30-40$ for any game as much as I can remember.

Facts, I don't need games as soon as they come out. I don't own, a ps5 yet* but, I am planning to pick one up soon. I don't really, use my disc games on PS4. I own more digital games, and I like the convince of finding deals online. (3rd party), so finding deals isn't an issue for me. Because, relying on PSN only would be dumb. We all know, they like to wholesale their titles. Disc drive is cool, but I can go without tbh.

There's plenty of PS4 titles available on disc and they are super cheap, often cheaper than digital. Borderlands3 was $25 Australian a year ago, still $100 digital!

Just got a ps5 last week after trying for 2 years. I went with the disc version, it was the one I always wanted. I have several dozen ps4 discs as well as an extensive Blu-ray,dvd, and now several uhd4k Blu-rays. Good points on the sales of new games and selling used if necessary. But I do have a lot of games I bought digitally on the ps4 and a few on the ps5. So I’m not knocking buying digital, just the disc system is the one I need.

I hear you and agree 100 percent but with the limited amount of PS5's available to me I had to get a digital version as well but I have found a way of getting the games I wanna play at a reasonable discount. First step WAIT FOR A PSN sale! I know the PSN sales for new release games are still pretty high but when you add that $15 or $20 discount with my next step it's a win win. Second step, GAMESHARE! I gameshare with a family member and likeminded gamer so we split the cost. If the Playstation Network has a sale on Ratchet and Clank and it's $50 for me it's really just $25 and it's all good.

You got a new subscriber here. Great content, really enjoyed it. I finally managed to pre-order the PS5 disk edition and can't wait to get my hands on it. I've never even considered buying the digital edition for the reasons you just mentioned in the video. I recommend you sell it and buy the disk version.. You should be able to get your money back or close to that amount, having in mind how hard is to buy a PS5 console still, more than a year after its release..

I decided in 2015 to stop buying disc media. All my purchases are in the store now.

Thank you for the wonderful and honest feedback, definitely got enlightened this side.

The problem is, I’m a kid and it’s hard to save money so I can’t really acquire the disk version due to price. I’ve also never owned a PS console before so I have no PS4 discs. I think the digital edition is right for me.

I have some physical ps4 games and I still got a digital edition. I beat most of them and don't really care to replay them. I still got my og ps4 if I care to relive those games.

I haven’t bought a disk version of a video game in year’s my back catalog is so heavy I want be getting a PS5 for another year. Long story short 3 months after a games release they go right on sale in the PlayStation store.

As soon as that playstation store or server goes down your system will deny you access to your entire digital catalog. That's why I don't get digital unless it is a banging sale.

@@mjjones1045 that's actually not true. As long as you have the games downloaded you are good as far as a server crash. All you really have to do is renew your licenses every 6 months or so.

Bought my physical edition PS5 3 days ago and i'm pleasantly surprised by the number of games in stores between £15-£30. I checked the digital copies on PS Store and was shocked they mostly full price £40-£60.

I ordered my digital edition off of stock x like 3 days ago since it was cheaper then the getting the regular edition I also never buy physical games I only buy digital since I am a person who has a fear of fucking up my discs (all because of 360) so I’m not annoyed of not having a disc drive since I mainly play on my series x and I’m only gonna be using my ps5 for single player games so I’m not really losing anything true I may lose on games that are on sale physically but I don’t care that much so I see where your coming from but all honestly it really depends on your situation. Some people in the comments are talking about how bad it is to have a digital edition ps5 so ima just say this if your the type of person buy or have physical games then it makes NO SENSE to buy a digital edition like at all. like at that point your just shooting yourself in the foot digital editions isn’t a waste of money it just depends on how you buy your games. if your the type of person to get any type of disc game no brainer get the regular ps5 if your not a fan of discs and would exclusively only get digital then get the digital edition that’s all there is to it

I literally just bought a PS5 Digital Edition and I would say I don’t regret it. I used to buy disc games over the years but then I started to look into digital games and found it convenient to just have all the games instantly accessible. Plus, I had disc drive issues with my Ps4 that wouldn’t eject the discs so I would have to flip it upside down or try to reach in the drive and pull it out, risking damaging the disc in the process. Thats something I didn’t want to potentially struggle with so I opted to go for the digital edition of the PS5. I also agree with other comments in that when sales hit the PS Store, the discounts are great especially with the PS Plus subscription and I also wait until the sales take place any way so it all works out.

The nice thing about having the disc, is that you can swap games with your friends back and forth and save a ton of money. Also, if your disk goes out, and if you don’t have the money to repair it at the time($$$), you still have the option to buy digital games from PlayStation store.🤔

Listen, the REAL difference is how good you are at finding deals and sales. I’ve had both versions and truthfully Playstation is VERY competitive with this generation this time around. Every game I found cheaper in a physical copy has ended up as a free game with PS plus or at an equal or cheaper price than in store a month or two later. It’s really down to if you want to have a disc collection on a shelf, or a collection in your digital library. Either way, get one ☝️

This is true. PS Store is constantly having sales and having PS Plus knocks the prices down considerably. Obviously disc version is "better" but I like the symmetrical look of the digital and simplicity of no discs. I might miss out on a few bucks here and there but as long as PS is still in service I have these games in my library forever

Great video and a lesson learned. Going all-digital for console may be initially convenient, but it still isn’t up to par when compared to PC. Console manufacturers have no reason to discount their digital games as deeply or as often as PC storefronts nor do they have any qualms about delisting games or outright closing their servers, eliminating future access to digital libraries. I have little doubt these issues will continue into the future, which is why if I ever get another console, it must also support physical media delivery for its games.

Even with the disk all you often get is a broken unpatched disk. At best it barely functions properly at worse it will be a link on disk to servers that will eventually be shut down. Its how PC disks died.

@@brokeandtired your point about broken games on disc is definitely accurate, especially considering the recent travesty that is the GTA Trilogy. However there hasn’t been, to my knowledge at least, an instance where a console disc has only served as an unlock key for a digital download of a console game. Console game discs include at least a full game within their contents. Certainly there are instances where one game out of a compilation is included and the others are downloaded from servers, like in the case of the first run Spyro and Crash Bandicoot trilogies from a few years back. But it wouldn’t make sense to spend money on disc and case manufacturing just to deliver an unlock key only a few MBs in size. Might as well just ship a cardboard slip with a code inside.

@@nelAjamZ yes and before that Capcom shipped “physical versions” of some games with just a case and the digital download code inside on a piece of paper. However, in neither instance was there a data disc that only served as an unlock key for a digital version. It just wouldn’t make sense from a cost-effectiveness perspective.

Thanks for this video! I knew I’d be buying the disc version, hands down. The digital version felt like a “light” version which barely reflected in the price. There is no way I’m going to drop 600-something bucks and box myself in to use a digital format only for 4 to 5 years at a time! I’ve seen disc games being sold cheaper than their digital versions, and vice-versa. I’d rather have the peace of mind to choose which version of the game I want that suits me in that moment. I get $100 is quite steep by itself, but if one is in the market for something as expensive as PS5 and to then get cold-feet over the disc version is like buying a high-end iPad and then griping how some apps have to be paid for.

There's absolutely zero difference between the digital and the physical except for the disc reader inside the disc version they both work exactly the same and you're not going to pay more with the digital unless you buy the game right at launch and the physical version does not last longer than the digital as a matter of fact it probably has a shorter lifespan due to overheating

Having no stock most of the time, I bought a ps5 digital since its the only PS5 available at the time. I have no regrets though better have a digital version than having no PS5.

I agree with this. I missed out on GT7 Black Friday sale on the digital store, but I was able to get a physical copy weeks later at Best Buy for the same price of 39.99 but on the ps store was a full 70

glad I didn't miss out on that sale for $40 for both ps4 and ps5 editions. I got the digital edition and love it. between the psn deals and ps plus extra I got access to almost everything digitally for cheap. picked up last of us part 2 for $9

The disk version became available which I was able to purchased. So the following week I sold my digital PS5. Disk version was my first choice, because over time disk games will dropped in price which is the route I will take when it comes to buying games.

I have a question that may seem stupid, but can I download the game on the PlayStation from the disc like a computer so that I do not have to put the disc every time, I did not have any game console before, so I do not know.

I have a series x, and even though I can use discs in it, I usually play game pass games or buy digital games when they're on discount. I'm deciding on buying a steam deck or a ps5, and I think I will go for the digital edition if I choose a ps5, because I don't really buy physical games nowadays

yup thats me. mostly a pc gamer so physical died for us in the early 2000s. consoles just slow to catch up. got a steam deck ps5 digital and a switch. the only system worth going physical maybe is switch because of how trash nintendos online infrastructure is and how ridiculous nintendos games hold their value.

4K Blu-ray movies are also nice to watch. I know a lot of people don’t care but every now and then I like watching a physical Blu-ray Disc. Yes physical games are definitely cheaper most of the time. You are right.

I actually regret buying the blu ray drive version as the drive is so loud that it sounds like a helicopter taking off. I adjusted the screws and everything and yet it still way too loud. Now I'm going all digital just because I've had it with it. And this is supposedly a game of chance, some units being louder than others.

I actually wanted the digital more but I did notice the amazon sales. I just hate having the Discs taking up physical space, I don’t sell games and enjoy not having to insert discs into optical drives as I change games. I ended up ordering the PS5 with the optical drive because it was available. Either way, happy to have the PS5 on the way!

I honestly always preferred discs because of the cover arts . The only problem is if your disc gets to beat up it can just stop working and you have to buy a whole new one. I also like the game share with a friend which you cannot do with the discs.

If it’s the cases that take up too much room, you can get one of those cd binders and just keep the discs in there. Wouldn’t take up much more room than maybe 2-3 hardcover books. Then you can either get rid of the cases altogether or just stow them away in a box or something

Interesting takes on both sides of the argument. I think I’m going to opt for the digital version though. My PS4 disc drive packed in over a year ago and as I only played PES on it I just downloaded it and any other games I fancied. Tbh it’s made me a lot more picky when it comes to buying a game. As I’ve gotten older I don’t spend as much time playing games so digital is the best way for me to go. Genuinely it’s up to the individual! 👍🏻

I am glad I got the disc edition because even with the store sales it seems it’s always still almost half the price on Amazon for a disc copy.

I've always been a physical collector of my games, partly because, if Sony hypothetically decided to pull the plug on their network and lock all their games, your collection becomes meaningless. Yes, it's insanely unlikely to happen, but at least having a physical copy means you're actually in charge of your copy of the game. Another reason is choice! If it's cheaper digital, there's the choice to grab it online, but otherwise, physical copies can also be sold cheaper due to how many retailers are selling, so the price isn't solely in Sony's hands as it would be if you were to buy from the PSN. It's also just great having a collection of games and seeing how your hobby's collection has built up and amassed over the years. It's also a nice visual reminder every so often to reboot a game you may not have visited in a while, whereas if you're deleting digital games from your library to make space, you're just more likely to forget about them whilst they sit in a digital pile doing nothing.

Why not buy spare ssd then store games on it as a backup?

I saw this coming miles away and I got the disc edition. The best thing about all of it is that you can simply trade in the games that you are done with and buy new games at great discounts!.. the digital edition is a waste of investment long term.

I got my Digital Edition completely by accident. I followed alerts on Twitter and one of them said it was available to order from GameStop, so I jumped right in and ordered it. Didn’t even look at the price. When I checked the confirmation, I realized it was the Digital Edition. I was about to cancel the order but decided to stick with it since I have zero physical media…and it would be another seven years til I could chance at another PS5. I have literally no complaints.

I got the disc edition especially since my kid wanted to play FIFA17, which is unavailable on the PSN, but glad to know I (potentially) saved myself money. Unrelated - could you get/use a lapel mic or something? There's too much echo in the video, thanks.

Theirs definitely pros and cons but theirs nothing like just turning on your ps5 digital and just pressing X instead of having to change disc every time.

Good video find sir the last video I watched right before yours my exact comment to the dude was over the course of a year or three games you have now paid the exact same price. That was the exact point you made and if you're one of them people who can beat a game within 6 days you can't get any of your money back with the digital versions you're just stuck with the game that you beat in six days with that said great great minds think alike over the period of 2 years you're already losing money if you buy six games. It's October 20th 2022 they just gave me $287 for my PS4 yesterday evening today I spent an hour standing in store contemplating disc? no disc? disk? no disc? And now I feel like I'm just going to go with the disc version even though it is kind of ugly I was going to get the digital purely for Aesthetics. Good video thumbs up for you sir

With the pending announcement of the Playstation Plus "Game Pass" (rumoured) next year, the Digitial Edition seems to be in the same position as the XBOX Series S machine. I have chosen the Digital Edition, which is not because of the price. I am happy with my purchase, but I do acknowledge that for some people the physical games are still important.

I hate the digital editions of both consoles. I think they are a scam and people that buy them (unless they were desperate for a ps5 and couldn't find a physical one) are lying to themselves or just really... dumb. Unless you really don't kind spending 20 / 50% more on games. New games are ALWAYS 15 / 20 euro cheaper physical and even the deepest PSN discount is still often 30 to 50% more expensive than the non discounted retail price. But to be fair the digital ps5 and series s are definitely not on the dame footing. The ps5 digital edition is every bit as powerful as the disc edition. The series S is less powerful by a massive margin and is already dropping as low as 480p in some games. Its a scam made to sell to parents that are looking to buy their kid a console during the holidays but want the cheapest option. "Same as series x only 1440p" my ss. Can't even hit 1080 in the majority of games It's to be seen if Sony game pass will be competitive with ms's offering. I'm a little worried. Sony had had really slacking since they know they are on top. I miss the sony from the early ps4 days. Now they just feed is absolute crp on PSN and don't even bother with the bare minimum. Literally gave ps5 owners a demo of the worst game of the console this month lol (godfall).. If the Sony gamepass turns out to be as good as the ms one though, ps5 will be a far superior option to series s, even being 100 euro more its the far better and over the long term

I guess the digital console makes most sense if you are a patient gamer. PSN sales are often awesome but you have to wait a long time for excellent deals. On the other hand with the disc console you can have great deals all the time and even if the digital version of a game is much cheaper than the retail game you still win because you can any time buy and download it.

the thing is you save $100 with the digital edition which lets you afford to add in a 2tb nvme ssd to the console which you're going to want with the disc edition ps5 too. I'm not a bluray guy and I've been a pc gamer since the 90s so like physical games just aren't a thing on pc so its not a big deal to me to amass a massive physical library. I only did it on ps4 and earlier just because there was some good physical deals at the time. now that ps plus extra exists its way more convenient to sub to that and just grab whatever I wanna play. and now with 3tb of storage I got plenty to just download and swap whenever I want.

If you are willing to repurchase old PS4 disc games for a Digital PS5, can you at least still get your game progress backups ported over so you can pick up where you left off even thought you repurchased the game for PS5?

Been a hardcore PC gamer for over 7 years now. Disks to me are a nuisance and games are cheaper digitally on PC. Because stores are filled with physical disks and they need to be shifted, consoles are ass backwards when it comes to digital or physical prices.

Yeah but even the likes of PC storefronts start out with full retail prices of $60/$70 dollar games. Despite the only space being reserved is from a server somewhere. However, I definitely agree that PC storefronts have sales that are far more often and deeper than anything the walled garden of consoles could ever hope to have.

I will always buy a disc version of a console if it's available. To me there's something about having that physical copy of a game. I was fortunate enough to score a PS5 from Sony directly yesterday. All they had was the disc version with the Horizon bundle. I was so happy it wasn't the digital version, even if it meant getting a game I'll never play. I also use the Blu-ray a lot.

I have it too bro , but in version 6.02 and i am waiting a possible jailbreak , i preffer to wait and jailbreak it and enjoy the new tittles in the future. Just bought the ps5 digital edition and have no regrets. I see how it can box others in, but personally I only play a few games like FIFA, Warzone, F1, etc, so once I’ve bought the 3/4 games that I want I won’t be paying anything more really. I already have F1 2021 as well, I got it on sale on the PS store for €30. It helps that the PS sales are far better than the Xbox ones, I had an Xbox one for 6 years or so and their sales were usually weak - small reductions on games that aren’t in demand - whereas PS can have 50% reductions on games that are still only in the middle of their life cycle.

It’s mainly a personal preference between the 2 versions but in my opinion the disc version is better because a lot of the games I play are physical copies and you can trade off disc games with your friends super easily

Disk edition is objectively a better deal. But I put my hands on a digital edition (disk edition was not available) and it suits me: I had already taken the resolution not to buy physical games anymore bacause I simply have no more room at home. It forces me not to add more boxes in my shelves. Also, yes the games are more expensive, but there are sales every once in a while, and you end up buying less games because you are less likely to make impulsive purchases not to miss a good deal (on a second hand game for instance), or by fear a game goes out of print. You just buy the games you want to play when the time is right. And I ended spending less money (personnally). My only regrets are regarding the UHD BluRay player, and the ability to read my old ps4 disc games.

Physical are always gonna be there for you, they are people who still have their ps1 games in good condition. But if I'm honest I would prefer cartridges over disc.

I just rebought a ps5, did you mention trade in prices aswell? You save a bunch via that, or selling them. I play mainly PC so, having a collection of physical games for the disc version is cool. Kinda missed it on PC, I always got PC physicals if I could, if they were codes in a box and I wanted them in my collection I would sometimes buy 2 copies. My release day one was also disc.

I pre-ordered my PS5 Digital Edition a month ago and I expect to get it next month. Edit: I am not a huge fan of physical games anymore since the PS5 has announced last year.

Bought the Digital version and don’t regret it for one second. The sales on PS+ are phenomenal and I don’t have to drive to a shop or wait for an order. I use the PS5 as a games console, not a media centre, the Blu-ray drive on the console is of no use to me as all of my UHD and 4K content is watched through and NVidia Shield. Oh, and I don’t have to worry about damaged discs. Digital content is definitely the way to go. Just bought my daughter a PS5 Digital as well. She loves it…

It’s cool if folks are caught on the nostalgia of having disc but the future is digital!!! I got the disc then was lucky to switch to digital. The price to me didn’t matter. I don’t have Blu-ray or DVD’s and the games I had in my PS4 was digital and I was able to carry them over with no charge. Pricing of the games, I just wait when Sony has the specials. To me digital is a convenience. Why go to the store to reserve a game and then go back to the store and buy it when I can just buy and download it without leaving the house. 🤷‍♂️

I got mind on the physical edition way better then digital.

Got the series x at launch & 2 years later now I’m getting the digital ps5 god of war bundle. Literally only paid for one game at 10 dollars from the plus rewards & every other game I got free im late to the party but I got a endless amount of games I wanted to play & didn’t pay anything. I guess I lucked out overall 😭😭

which is why I got the disc version, also I can play DVD's if mates come around and we have a take away and want to watch a film.

I bought the disc version for the very reason you mentioned. In general, buying physical games is cheaper. Not always the case, but it usually is.

Well no, because sale prices are made by the retailer, not by the games publisher/developer. That’s why when a game goes on sale at a certain store, it might still be full price elsewhere. Permanent price drops as opposed to sales are usually made by the publisher/developer and are universal amongst different retailers and the digital storefront. Also, unless you’re purchasing directly from a retailer (ie “Ships and Sold by Amazon”), you’re not getting the same warranty on a product, so if you buy a video game on sale from a third party seller, and you open it, and receive it damaged, they might not take it back or replace it as easily as if you had purchased it directly from a certified retailer. And lastly, this might be a regional thing, but buying digital games might mean not having to pay tax versus buying the physical copy.

I was always breaking the discs and having to rebuy, so when it happens 3 times it works out to the same issue.

Also worth noting is the fact that games install faster from disk, even if you do still need to download patches regardless

@@GameAGuy I dont have kids, my father had hundreds of records in his discography, although there might be a chance of harm caused by them I think it's not any higher than any other item commonly found in households, just take appropriate measures to prevent them from self harm (but I could be wrong as I dont have kids) and I just saved 50% on disk versions of demon souls, miles morales and rift apart which are a year or less old, no 3 year wait and if it's on sale on ps store I can buy it there as well best of both worlds :) I might just be oldschool but I enjoy the feeling of physically "owning" games

@@pafiking i have re bought 10 dvds and or bluray movies my kids have screwed up 3 to 4 time. Plus most PS games are mature rated so I cant play while they are awake. So my switch gets more of my time. My real siding with digital is based on kids and also living in a modestly small apartment. I have no room for allot of physical media. I suppose if I was still single I might still buy physical.

I would say getting the Disc version is better overall because you have best of both worlds digital & physical options. Getting a PS5 is extremely hard now so I understand why people are getting the Digital version if they dont have a choice.

Here’s a potential dumb question because I’m buying my first ps5 tomorrow….it’s a digital one, can I still download gta 5 on it? Or do I have to buy the disc edition and just cross it over?

I got the disc version to play UHD boy ray. Many years ago I bought TLJ on UHD blu ray for like 50 bucks. I was surprised when my ps3 blu ray player could not read the disk. Apparently there is a new format called UHD 4K Blu-ray and I didn’t know about that. I went to pick up my ps5 today and made sure to get the disc version

A guy on KZread traded his digital for a disk and got the disk edition, a game and some accessories, I think you should do it too because not only will you get a disk edition but you will also get some extra accessories and a game

About 70% of games I own are discs, with 30% digital.

Bought both, kept the Digital. You just have to know WHEN to buy from the PS Store. Deathloop, RE Village and Mass Effect Legendary are $30 rn. Doom Eternal $15, Wolfenstein Alt History $17. Also, if you have an external Hard Drive. It is faster to tranfer from console to hard drive and back again, than installing directly from the disc and download the patches.
