sometimes to help with the top bouffant for the 60s people would use "hair rats" and comb the top layer of hair over them after pinning to get a lot of volume. In ye olden days people would even use their old hair from their brushes and tangle it all together in a puff so that if it showed through it was just their hair

If you want to recreate the pomp in the future I recommend cutting a hair donut in half and using that to keep the hair up! That way you can also slide the bobby pins into it so they don't show

a tip for the 60s pump: I went model for a wedding hairstyle trial and for doing the bump in the 1960s hairstyle she used a donut like the black one(? she took the round shape and fold it, turned out well.
