Benfica fan here. In my opinion, there have been a few problems, it's a complex situation but I will try to explain it to you: 1. Roger Schmidt choices: sometimes it's hard to understand what the coach wants to do. We brought 2 left backs out of form to replace Grimaldo (Bernat and Jurasek) but Schmidt prefers to.... play Aursnes at left back... This creates a massive problem because Aursnes ISN'T a full back and he was one of our best players in the midfield/attack, so it's double punishment. Also Schmidt sent Florentino on the first 10-15 games to the bench without any reason, making him lacking motivation and form when coming back and creating a HUGE hole in the midfield by playing the duo Kokcu-Neves (both small and light players more attacking than defensive). 2. The right-back position: Last year, we had two good right-backs (Bah and Gilberto). Unfortunately, Gilberto wanted more playing time and left for Brasil. Schmidt chose not to buy a replacement for Bah, saying it was NOT needed because he had João Victor (was loaned out on Nantes). The problem: Bah has been HORRENDOUS this season and he injured himself for a few months. João Victor, u may ask? He's a center back trying to play right-back and he had a personal conflict with Schmidt, leaving him out of the squad and coach options. 3. The striker position: I loved Ramos since he was one of our academy boys, but despite all the goals he scored, the task to replace him wasn't that hard. He was a huge help defensively, but he still missed a lot of goals and he was not the best technically. The problem was the replacement: Arthur Cabral. He's incredibly OUT OF FORM and his replacements aren't that huge either. I like Musa, he's consistent and a very hard-working player, but it's not enough. Tengstedt who we've bought for around 8M, has been a huge flop. 4. The tactical confusion: Schmidt played on a 4-2-3-1 as last season, but soon he thought it wasn't good enough, we were losing and drawing games and playing bad. Recently he went to a 3-4-3, but as expected, it could work against small portuguese teams in the league, but it was DISASTROUS in the Champions League. Why? Players don't know the formation and he tried to create routines in that formation using the wrong methods. Specifically playing our most creative midfielders Aursnes and João Neves at full-backs (it makes me cry everytime I think of it), bringing João Mário to the midfield (incredibly out of form) and bringing Florentino (incredibly demotivated and out of form) back. 5. Team inconsistency: Playing Florentino-Enzo or Florentino-Neves isn't the same as playing Kokcu-Neves. None of those 2 are good at defending and both give up on their creative roles to defend. Which is idiotic. Jurasek and Bernat have been huge flops and horrible on the defensive part. Di Maria, although a start full of goals and assists, doesn't defend a tiny bit, just like João Mário. Cabral, doesn't help in the pressure as Ramos used to do. This all combined leaves the team trying to play Gegenpress w/o the ingredients for it. The team is soft, doesn't apply enough pressure, constantly out of position, very unbalanced to the attack, leaving a lot of space in the defense. I don't foresee a good near future for us, neither for Roger Schmidt, whom the fans are already losing the patience with. Hope this changes in the near future, and tonights game against Sporting could decide the german coach future.

2 months later, somethings you mentioned are not an issue anymore: 1- We found the Bah replacement: Aursnes has been one of the most influential players, being present in lots of goals and being solid defensively. 2- kokcu is learning how to play deeper with neves because neves is good defensively and kokcu is learning how to be more aggressive and press better. 3- arthur is in a better form and we signed one of the best u21 strikers in the world: Marcos Leonardo. 4- We have now a tactic settled. we are back to the 4231 and we are nearer to what we were pressing last season 5- our general confidence and our general run of form is better There is still one big problem: the leftback. bernat is always injured and jurasek doesnt get gametime. we rather play Morato (a left footed centre back), who doesnt contribute on the attack. I hope leandro barreiro that comes next season helps us to have an even more pressing midfield and alvaro fernandez to be a proper replacement to grimaldo

Something glitched out second game he lost 2-0 and agg was 3-3. They went to pens and cani won 4-2

So, how is that possible that you take a 67-72 overall guy who is 25-27 into the team and in few seasons he is like 85, 87 or so? (I remember Dovbyk from Girona for example)

We sold top players and havent signed the right replacement. We lost Grimaldo and we bought two players that cant fit his right foot. We had Ristic but Schmidt didnt like him. We lost Ramos and got a Pine tree called Cabral, he isnt bad but he doesnt play in the right system ( Schmidt has 100% of the fault in this case). And we lost Enzo but we havent found a player that fits his role. We have Kokcu, but he plays out of position. João Neves and Aursnes are the backbone at the moment. And we dont have a backup right back ( Aursnes to the rescue, as Bah is always injured). The main issue is themat the season was badky planned from the get go

I’m a Benfica fan, and I think Cabral’s gonna be very good, he just needs a bit more time. We have a clear problem in the left side of the defense, but that’s manageable. For me, the real problem is our manager, Schmidt. His 1st season was great, but there were some easy to identify problems, which have worsened this year. He needs to sort himself out and bring in all the good qualities we’ve seen he has.

This is it. I think this January transfer window is gonna be crucial for us. Refresh our ideas maybe bring in new people to strengthen the fullback and striker roles. Maybe get rid of some people either by loan or selling. It’s a massive month for us comming ahead. Hopefully we can qualify for europa league and by the time the second half of the season comes we can attack threat competition with a better form team and keep the good results in the league. I think our midfielders are all great, but Kokcu is a 10 played as an 8 or 6, Aursnes is limited in the attack when in left back (remember how he scored a bunch of important goals at the near end of last season?), João Neves and Florentino are doing a good job in my opinion Chiquinho is out of form tho :/
