I totally agree with you that the fantasy category is often a catch-all for any book with speculative elements that should belong in another category. And good on you for dropping books you are not getting anything out of! I've realized that the best DNFs are the ones you truly never think about again. I actually achieved my Goodreads goal this year by not having read a single book that was nominated - it tells me I'm doing a good job diversifying my author pool lol. There are so many other great awards out there that would make for much better reading material.

This was so fun! I’m currently reading the top ten horror and oof they’re so mediocre 😅 but it’s still fun, like you said! I was curious what the best horror was and it’s been an interesting experiment

Growing up, I was also not really a Shadowhunters fan, but was looking forward to reading Sword Catcher because the premise sounded really interesting(and because there was a lot of hype around the release). Unfortunately, I DNF'd right around 40% because, like you said in your update, it was pretty repetitive and boring. I was definitely sad because I wanted to love the book and I honestly don't foresee myself returning to this book or completing the series. On a more positive note, I'm looking forward to reading Amina! I just finished Kingdom of Copper and am about to move on to Empire of Gold(which I'm not emotionally prepared for, lol), and will read Amina once I'm done with Daevabad.

Ugh I totally get that, I was really hoping this would be my in with Cassandra Clare, but sadly it wasn’t. Maybe the positive is at least we know for sure we aren’t missing out?! I really hope you love Amina! It was a very fun time!

Angela and I have been talking about why Jasad Heir is there...the consensus is because it's kind of new adulty written by a female author and....sexism is real. But I agree Jasad Heir is NOT romantasy...I also think the marketing did that book dirty promising Egyptian mythology and it's more light Egyptian flavor at BEST. I still need to get to Amina. And Hoid is in every Cosmere book so he first was there in Elantris, so it is now one of those things where you look for him popping up in every book but he does play a larger role in Stormlight. Your complaints about June Farrow sound so much like my experience with Spells for Forgetting. She tries to have so many different genres in there but doesn't focus on any of them enough so it's just a very mid reading experience.
