Katniss springs to mind. I know she's imperfectly written but damn she's far more interesting and human than these strange female characters in smut. An example of innocent character that's done right or interesting is early Sansa from Song of Ice and fire. She never lost her knid heart and innocent despite hardships, she got smarter at seeing who would use her and whose actually genuine and in turn played up her perceived naivety to fool enemies. Her character is flawed like a aristocrat girl would be, yet her feminine qualities are never bashed in the narrative which is so refreshing to read.

I'm starting to think that 'bad boy' is just a polite euphemism for 'hot scumbag'.

Like, if you see the DDDNE tag alongside something like "necrophilia" or "cannibalism" or "rape/non-con", etc., then you'll know without a shadow of a doubt that these topics will be written about in scenes in graphic detail. The DDDNE tag is _only_ to be used on fics with problematic content that could trigger someone, not just for generic tags. I just feel like if I were to write a dark romance I would go for a concept more sexy than "creepy drug dealer at the club is kinda hot and wants to k1ll my dad" Also I rarely see "dark" smut or romance that walks the edge of scary and romantic/sexy successfully. It *can* be done but people almost always take it too far in *both* directions too fast. Where's the build-up??? Where's the tension???

I can't recount all the times I've read a dark romance rec with people going "oh, this is so hot", "omg the tension" just to have the heroine getting wet for the hero after the first meeting. I get trying to establish sexual tension but when it's dark romance it just feels so cheap to make everything so sexual at the first chapter. Delayed gratification and the feeling of being on the edge of my seat is personally why I take an interest in the genre but so many books fail to deliver 🧍‍♂

In fiction it's not the biggest issue ever, fiction is fiction for a reason, but there are ideas like this that bleed into society, where "attractive" or rich men think that they can get away with being creeps because "well women like books like that, so they must like that irl too".

One of my favorite media ships is one that realistically would be exactly that. Granted, the guy saying that would've also been 11 at the time, but it's really funny to say "yeah he's been watching this guy on a monitor screen since they were both kids and has arrested him multiple times throughout the following years" without the context that his entire shtick is watching over every variant of himself in other universes and making sure they don't cause trouble. It just so happens to be that this other version of himself is an inherent troublemaker. Lmao

Given that the first parts of this story are about him wanting to defile her to take revenge on her father... he's talking about grape. There's a difference between dark romance and violent grossness - shouldn’t be excused just because he's conventionally attractive + the love interest.

I think the thing I personally don’t like about Dark Romance it’s that usually the author focus just in physical attraction and sex and I can’t believe when the characters say they love each other because they don’t really know anything personally about each other. You have to at least know your partner’s interests and hobbies to have something deep going on. But I guess that how straight culture works.

Dude I think you deserve a lot more financial compensation for putting yourself through that my goodness.

Every time I feel bad about my writing, I remember some people consider this to be a plot.

the earlier descriptions of hook's "fantasies" made my already asexual self's stomach turn so much, and I think I deserve compensation. also, his edginess throughout just reminds me of someone who reads sexually violent manga or who used to frequent liveleak. which just convinces me that if this was real life, my guy would not be an attractive drug dealer that wendy could save, but an incel who ends up killing her, uploading the photos of it to the internet, and then offing himself before any type of justice could be served. if the author is into that, okaaaay but --
