I think the guinea pigs are supposed to be a play on the myth where Cerce turns the sailors into pigs but for a middle grade book update he made them cute. The Pigs in the original myth were sometimes dinner

Yes. Circe did explain it in the book itself as well. She said something along the lines of "I used to turn men into pigs because that's closer to a man's 'true form' but now I do guinea pigs because they aren't as smelly and also they are cuter/smaller." Something like that.

Film? The only adaptation was the musical, there is no film in Ba Sing Se More seriously though, I love these books. It's so sweet Riordan wrote an entire series just so his ADHD Dyslexic son could feel like a hero.

In the first book they do talk about the protective barrier around the camp! That’s why his mum can’t run any farther when the Minotaur attacks - because of the barrier if I remember it right?

I was referring to the films at that point. The barrier is only at the doorway in the first film, but in the second film the barrier is further out because of where the tree is - so how come the Minotaur and Percy’s mum get past that barrier and get to the doorway 👀 I think it’s just a continuity error in the films only

Do keep in mind that there’s a solo book with Nico and Will that takes place after Trials of Apollo called “The Sun and the Star”

I read the series for the first time last year, and I love how I went into it expecting Percy to be kinda a weakling and loser, and instead he was sooo sassy from the start and I loved it so much, he is definitely my fave character and his first person narration made the story for me

Can't wait for Heroes of Olympus Gavin. It's not as good but I still enjoyed it. It also has a lot more representation (some better than others). Has multiple POVs again some better than the others but still quite wholesome. Also really flashes out Nico as well as Hades I think personally.

Two hours to spend with Gavin AND Percy? I'm ready. - I also watched the movies before I read the books and while I accept that they're a crappy adaptation, they're still fun movies!- I'm just going to listen to you talk about Nico and casually wait for you to keep reading the rest of the Percyverse hahaha You're absolutely right about the final battle in New York. It felt like a giant megaverse of everyone coming back together to fight the big bad and it was the best time.

It's always amusing to watch people who didn't have a Greek mythology phase as a youth try to learn & wrap their heads around the myths as an adult. I was a hyperfixated Greek mythology girlie who read The Iliad & The Odyssey (& anything else related) when I was a preteen, so I first read the Percy Jackson books as they were being released. I tend to forget a lot of the details from the myths aren't common knowledge to most normies lol

GAVIN, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the last video. I just hit 30 myself and the last few years I have been riddled with severe social anxiety following covid. It's caused me to drift apart from my good friends and family, and it's been destroying me internally. It genuinely helps knowing that you are going through something similar. Here's to hoping we're both going to be able to claw our way out and be more like the people that we want to be.

You are going to have the absolute time of your life reading all of Rick Riordan’s stuff. Heroes of Olympus was my childhood and Trials of Apollo, having binge read the entire series a month ago, it was so fun from start to finish, you’re going to love them

Hate to add to the never-ending TBR but I'd read Trials of Apollo before picking up Chalice of the Gods. Otherwise you'll definitely hit a big spoiler that is relevant to previous books. Also looking forward to the chokehold Nico has on Gavin's heart lol

Finally, someone brave enough to defend the camp fun of the movies!!! Sure, they're bad when compared to the books, they aren't great adaptations. But oh boy!! They are a blast to watch. I mean, the 'don't walk on my roof' scene?? Iconic. The obstacle tower scene in sea of monsters when they played fall out boy??? I think about that scene more often than I should. I can't wait for the show and can only hope that it manages to capture the same fun whilst also being a quality and faithful adaptation!

I loved your comment in the beginning about this series maybe being the one to get people into reading. You are so right! As a kid I had a really hard time learning how to read and I hated it sooo much. I only liked listening to stories, I LOVED hearing my parents tell me stories or having my brother read to me but that was it. My brother eventually suggested this series to me when I was around third or fourth grade and I was skeptical because it was series. But WOW did it change my life. I tore through this series dozens of times over and I became an avid reader after that, and I still am! (I have a vivid memory of re-reading the lightning thief and taping in the pages as I went because it was falling apart in my hands) I will always be grateful to this series for being such a safe place for neurodivergent kids like me and my brother and so many others :) Thank you again!!!

Also, a little heads up for Heroes of Olympus: you'll be really confused at the beginning and the first book might not impress you or pull you into the story like PJO did. Enjoying your review. With regardss to hating the reader in audiobooks... The fanmade audiobooks are great I love echoworm for the first series. A female reads the next one, it was good too. I lost all my paperbacks and audible stuffed around with ones I purchased... it was so nice to visit Percy universe again via KZread, while slowly building my library again through the apple audiobooks app.

I just loved watching this video and your reaction to it!! It makes me love the series more. The Titans Curse was my favorite of this series!!! And OMG and when Selena came through pretending to be Clarice and lead the Ares cabin into war JUST LIKE how Patroclus lead the Greek soldiers by pretending to be Achilles!!!!! I loooooved that part!!!! It was so cool to see the nod to Greek mythology! I’m excited to see you cover the rest of the other series!!!!

I have only read all the book once, but in book four you mention Percy needing this guidance from the gods and that it feels like he is not doing things by himself, I don´t remenber if in the books they called guidance, but I always saw it as manipulation and using the demigods, not only Percy, but all of them, the gods never put themselves in the shoes of the demigods, they just send them into missions, hope they will do their work, their quests, and that´s it, Percy it´s tied to this wolrd, to prophecies and the fates, he, and most demigods don´t have that big of a free will, you know? Also the way Percy reacts and talks back, that is all the power he manages to hold in his onw story

I'm excited for your future Rick Riordan journey! I might just join in as I only read the first Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo!!

Going to have to come back to this one after I do a reread, because I realized I can't remember if I finished all 5 or not and I don't want to spoil myself. Loved seeing your reactions and theories as you read these Gavin! Not sure if anyone else said or if you saw but there are more short stories that can be read after (and some between) the first five books of the series - its called in The Demigod Files. (Theres also the demigod diaries but that has spoilers for the second series)

I read all of these books this year as well, and they are just adorable. Great palette cleansers in between some chunky fantasy and fantasy romance. I didn’t expect to like them as much as I did. I’ve moved on to The Heroes of Olympus series and I am really enjoying it as well. It is definitely aged up, more YA as opposed to middle grade, but still the same great characters and awesome take on mythology. I can’t wait to see wait you think!

I’m late to this video but I loved it! I highly recommend you read Heroes of Olympus series. Not only is it fascinating seeing how Riordan portrays the Roman mythology compared to the Greeks, but all of your favorite characters from Percy Jackson cross over into those books for an extended time. Actually some of my favorite Percy/Annabeth moments happen in Heroes of Olympus.

This is my favourite series. I read the first two books like you and finished the series as an adult. I remember it really giving me this introduction to Greek myths and stories, so much so that I minored in Latin mythology (I took Latin in high school and found it easier for me to understand)

Highly recommend the podcast “The Newest Olympian” now that you’re all caught up with the main series 🥰

Enjoy the special edition books Gav!! As much as I LOVE Percy Jackson, I don't ever plan on ordering those Illumicrate books- they're just way too expensive (I live in the US). No thanks. I'll happily keep my original books I own. I got them from the schoolastic book fair when the series first came out when I was in middle school. That all said, anyone else who ordered the Illumicrate edition, congrats!!

I neeed to read these books, I have the UK edition but I kinda want the edition you're using because they look better and it'll better the reading experience.

hi! i'm new to your channel and I'm so glad you enjoyed this series! the pjo world is one of my all time faves and will always be my comfort read ;-; i binge all 15 books (pjo, hoo, and toa) a few months ago before the release of chalice of the gods and icb its been YEARS since the release of these books. i can't wait for you to read heroes of olympus!! there are short stories connected to some of the books like the bronze dragon. the timeline for that is around the pjo series but it'll make sense before you read the lost hero (first book of heroes of olympus). there are short crossover between pjo and the kane chronicles too. also, idk if you've seen it but rick riordan also released a greek gods and heroes book with percy narrating it and its so funny 😭

I read the Percy Jackson series for the first time, and watched each section as I finished the book, so it was like a book club! We shared pretty much the same opinions and this was such a fun series!

No I agree, the movie was a lot of fun, I also enjoyed it back then, though I haven't rewatched it since so I don't know if it still holds up lol but it is probably better to enjoy it as its own thing and not as an adaptation of those books xD I don't remember the poker face scene o.o but now I wanna listen to the song as well

the kane kids do have a crossover story with percy and annabeth in demi gods and magicians. and i wouldnt be surprised if rick brought the kane kids back in a later story

For the sake of plot line, I would highly suggest reading Heroes of Olympus next and then Trial of Apollo. While your currently planned schedule is how the books were released, the events of PJ lead directly to Heroes, and the events of Heroes lead directly to Apollo. Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase are off shoot stories that, while in the same universe, aren't necessarily impacted by the main story line. I understand if you want to read them in release order though! Just a suggestion if you don't want such a big gap in the story that you're following.

I really wish i could get into Percy Jackson as i should love them. And i did love Magnus Chase. But the one line in the third book that said Helios wasnt the sun god had me throwing the book across the room and giving up 😂

I am rereading the series because of the Disney+ show, which I absolutely love and Walker is a great Percy! The last time I've read the series was in middle schoool, bought all 5 books and then I would buy each Heroes of Olympus book once they came out in my country. It honsetly made me fall in love with Greek mythology and ancient Greece history, and made me want to write a book set in ancient Greece about Poseidon's daughter haha Anyway, I finished The Battle of the Labirynth yesterday, and I just love that every time Percy discovers a girl has a crush on him he's like whaaaat??? but I'm just me, how could this cool and beautiful girl like me??? He's such a fun character, who is actually beloved by his fandom!

It's a retelling of the illiad and book 2 is the odyssey

I am of your opinion that the films are super fun but only if I try not to think of them as an adaption 😂 But just as fun film. I loved this series so much as a child and they are so well written to their age audience. Agree that the pace is so fast and the friendship is a lot of fun. And the chapter titles are entertaining. Absolutely NOT a HP rip off i can't believe people think that?? I don't see the similarities and also I think people are too quick to call everything a HP rip off these days 🙄 Agree very fun inclusion of the mythology and learning about it. Percy does have his weak moments especially in book 2 but i also think it's a bit realistic to how some kids might react to step siblings and i like how he has that arc of becoming a better brother and understanding how wrong he is. I do find books 4 and 5 to be my fave alongside 1, with 5 being the five star for me because the final battle and plot twist are done SO well. But I didn't realise that 2 and 3 didn't have the trio at the core and that explains why I don't like them as much!!

I love Percy but Kane Chronicles are my absolute fave! Mostly cause I'm obsessed with anything Ancient Egypt)

You're gonna fall in love with Nico, mark my words. It's hard not to!

Nothing now is an original everything is a copy of a copy of a copy movies, shows, music, some book ( like recent publish books not all but some ) I never thought Percy Jackson was a copy of Harry Potter and I also never thought Harry Potter was a copy of something else then again I don't really read or watch a lot of fiction/sci fi stuff You definitely make me want to go grab the whole series and read it ( Am I the only one who actually loved both movies????)
