RE2 is the 1st groundbreaking in term of Protagonist route with different run RE1 2002 is the best REmake you can get with overhaul lots of gameplay, map design and enemies with crisp graphics for 2002 era. RE4 is the game that influence every other genre games with 3rd Person OTS (Over The Shoulder) camera. RE7 is the game that came back to life with more horror theme with DLC that gives you new experience and different mini games. The Scapegoat for RE series was RE Veronica because it supposed to be sequel from RE2 but get delayed because Sega Saturn cant handle the game due hardware limitation thus it moved 2 years later with the name of Veronica X. The most hated was RE Umbrella Corp and RE6 because they changed the game too much to the point where it destroyed the franchise. Despite the good sales on RE6, the hate from community was so much that it soon became black sheep of it.

I wish re2 got the same type of retro remake. I like the re2 remake that exists but I think the original was the best of all the classic re's. Would of been amazing if it got the same treatment as re1

13:45 Matt, I'm pretty sure the note in the RE2 N64 version that notifies Billy was dead was supposed to be Rebecca falsifying evidence to get the law off his back, remember at the end of RE Zero, they exclaim Billy is "dead" because otherwise he'd just be hunted down again for his crimes. So yes, Billy is still alive and well, he's just dead as far as the whole world besides Rebecca knows it.

they should have brought back billy by now, maybe in a more low budget type game like revelation. i honestly think they should make classic style games like re1 remake, even remake 2 and 3 in that same engine. it would be cheap to make them at this point but millions of people like myself, who hated the remakes for 2 and 3 we did get, would be all over them. they'd likely sell better than the revelation games. that could be the replacement to the revelation series, give us classic re fans the amazing remakes we never got. then if those were as successful as i suspect they would be, they could make new games in that same engine, like a new billy story that takes place a few years after re0.

@@Jack_80 They actually wanted to bring him back in the Infinite Darkness show, (There is a translated interview you can look up) but they couldn't figure out how to work him into it. So Capcom hasen't forgetten about him.

The Separate Ways DLC being longer than RE3R kinda revitalized my disappointment in that game.

RE 3 Nemesis was the scariest game ever. Nemesis chasing you down the police station for the first time was the most wtf scary moment ever

Something i remember about Resi 2, it was an event! And an event like we'd not seen before for a video game. It was featured in magazines that didn't care for games, our school was buzzing for the release, our local HMV had a full shop front display for a month up to the release with video which... we only saw in the big flag ship stores in London, not in our local one! It was an MASSIVE event.

I always liked how in Darkside Chronicles Leon and Claire explicitly decide against splitting up (like they actually did in the STARS office in RE2) two or three times. Considering that was Leon telling Krauser the story, I always figured it was like Leon: "And then we shot down the idea of splitting up." Krauser: "Yeah, you already mentioned you did that once. Why did you bring it up again? I mean, I figured you're not stupid enough to willingly separate from your partner in a situation like that." Leon: "Good. Just so we're clear. "

Original RE2 save room music is so absolutely GOATed.

Something to point out, it's not the Director's Cut of RE1 that has the shit music, it's the Dualshock version. The non-dualshock Director's Cut still had the OG's soundtrack, so if you actually want the best version of OG RE1, the non-dualshock Director's Cut version is the way to go.

@@josemanoeltavaresfilho3693 I actually agree with that, but I meant more as like the OG PS1 release of RE1. Some people hate the touch screen stuff they added (though you can turn these off iirc) but i think they're fun, especially the knife attack mini-game thing they did.

YUP, it's crazy that people forget how we have OG RE1, RE Director's Cut and THEN Dual Shock. Director's Cut is actually fantastic. Resident Evil 2 had the original release with the (imo sexy) thick PS1 double case and then had the slimmer Dual Shock supported version

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but both RE: Outbreak games are my all-time faves. Why? Because unlike any other RE, they not only give the player the experience of what it was like in Raccoon City at the VERY start of the outbreak, but actually put the survival into the survival horror. They are punishing, they have unparalleled replayability, each character has their own stats, abilities, and starting items, they are still, somehow, the only games with makeshift melee weapons (and unarmed attacks), they have short, 15min-1hr scenarios, are 3p co-op, have many hidden CGI videos, half the scenarios have entirely different stories, end bosses, and hard-to-get character-specific endings if certain requirements are met. Bets of all, you actually FEEL like you're in a zombie outbreak. You are literally an average joe/jane, except for one character that over the two games you come to find out a lot more about. Hell, they're the only games outside of 4 and 7 where you're infected...but unlike either of those, it affects the gameplay, because every bite, every scratch, it all increases your infection, so you are on a hard timer; once you reach 100%, you turn into a zombie for a bit on co-op. And every unlockable NPC or zany outfit ALSO has their own stats as well. Both games 100% came out like 5-10yrs too early, concept-wise.

Well said. Outbreak 2 had alot of fun unlockables. Both games had speed run charts built into it when it was still online. Having intentionally gimped online chat was enough to get what was needed but made it part of it's whacky charms. Each character in the Outbreak game was almost like a class or job system too which made it super fun to play different NPCs like in Outbreak 2 you could pick a wounded cop as your character and you started off in Critical Near Death at the start of the round but if you did that I think he was one of the better characters to play as. Modern day interpretation with better match making systems, the new REmake engines and perhaps some new or remade content from both games lumped together would be awesome, especially if they can update it in an on-going way. Money left on the table capcom. Outbreak 1 and 2 are my favorites.

RE outbreak has a special place in my heart it's technically my first online game. I never got into pc games besides rpgs so Re Outbreak was my first online experience.

I really think if they should have made a new or remade the outbreak title instead of doing reverse/resistance. If it was done correctly it would have been a far better multiplayer addition to series between re2 and re3 remakes.

I would say an enemy cooler than a zombie by less than Lickers would be Crimson Head.

Oh man crimson heads are way more frightening than a blind licker my friend. The only way I can see it being even is if Leon had a dummy thicc mod making his ass cheeks clap in the wind constantly making a sound. But even then you'd still have to either burn or blow the head off of a crimson head to kill it.

I got to experience REmake for the first time when it was brought over to Xbox One/PS4. Before then, I had only played 4, 5, 6 and Rev 1. That first playthru was something special, dude. The atmosphere and sound design created the most tense and scary experience I have every played. Immaculate game.

I always get a load of abuse because i never liked res 4 or the remake as much as the others but for me after finishing them i had no desire to play them again so i would put thrm in the tyrant section personally

I was so disappointed at RE3 remake, 3 was one of my favourites and the remake just felt like an afterthought.

​@@captainthunderbolt7541 I found Carlos to be kinda generic everyman kind of likable in the remake, he was fine but I wouldn't particularly care if he never came back to the franchise, whereas guys like Billy or OG Carlos would've gotten a reaction. Idk OG Carlos just had hilarious lines. Also holy crap I just realised how cool a RE Tactics game would be, you could get all the one and dones, finally Steve Burnside could line up next to Helena Harper.

Resident Evil (2002) will always be one of my favorite games of all time. It truly is the perfect remake. It cuts nothing, it adds a lot, and it's just oozing with atmosphere.

In no world is the RE3 Remake on par with OG 3. Like, it's not even close.

As a total package it might be the best Survival Horror Game ever made (I haven't played Kuon or Clocktower 3 or the lesser known Survival Horror Games), but I'd argue the RPD section in RE2make surpasses it if only slightly. Map shows which locks are on which doors, zombies maintain damage on them and follow you through several doors, Mr X twists your understanding and safety about halfway through. It really bothers me that they figured out a perfect survival horror formula for the RPD then just completely forgot that for the rest of the game with enemies you either have to kill or can completely ignore once you get past them.

I didn't like it as much as the original because I felt the Lisa story felt out of place and the mansion looked too run down and like a haunted house attraction whereas the original had this lived in eerie feel like where is everyone

@@johnk.2167 I felt like it fit beautifully. I guess if you overthink it then it becomes wildly implausible that the Lisa storyline could happen - but that is true for most RE plotlines. I don't ever overthink RE plots, because they don't bear scrutiny - and I am happy if they just contribute positively to the tone of the games, which I felt the Lisa plot accomplished beautifully.

Fun pick, now with those ranking names I want a monster tier list video.

I don’t know I’d put RE3make up so high personally. It’s well made and fun, but it feels too short. Once I know a RE game well I finish it around the 5 hour mark on replays, but RE3make took me under 5 hours on an initial playthrough.

It had a longer run time, more environments to explore, narrative decisions that changed the game a bit and a mercenaries mode. Keeping all that In mind, It made It more replayable than the remake counter part.

​@@zeroskaterz92 no, the orinal does have more areas, you have the initial racoon city segment, the rpd, the park, the clock tower, the dead factory, uptown, the hospital and the graveyard. Of all those areas they cutted like 5 on the remake and they modified the racoon city streets to make then straight lines, you literally are going one way for most of the games instead of having different paths or routes like the original where even depending on wich place you wanted to go first you had different outcomes, like meeting Carlos on different buildings and receiving different items because of that, or having different Nemesis encounters or cutscenes

@@zeroskaterz92 I mean the OG RE3 was never a long game at the first place (compare it to other mainline RE Games) the only thing that makes it feel long was the back tracking, Nemesis and the multiple choices,. But the remake makes the OG RE3 feels like a full RE Experience, don't get me wrong it was a fun game to play around it and pass some hour, but it wasn't a good RE game in my opinion (a good game in general but not a good RE game)

Shoutout to S. D. Perry! Those books were surprisingly good.

I gotta crown the RE4 Remake as my favorite Resident Evil game. I just recently bought it and I absolutely love it. So much so that it is the first Resident Evil game where I got the Platinum Trophy.

@@riemaennchen we see the game the same way ! I always hated the island in the original. Felt so drawn out & I didn’t care for the music. They condensed it, its better paced & the regenerators are even better. Also the laser room fits Ada more since she’s the real super spy. The U3 fight was great & the entire lead up to it. Now it has a back story, no longer some creature you just fight. The stage 2 of the fight was really good, especially on professional

The original Resident Evil was rated criminally low on this list.

@@silviuchertes9464 Give me a original line from the Remake that's more iconic and quoted than "Jill Sandwich" from the original. You can't judge games correctly without taking into account the time period and impact. Without that everything that's new is better by default.

OG RE4 + OG RE2 + RE1 Remake = The holy trinity of the series.

Oh RE8 is ahead of RE7 for sure. Imo RE8 is in the top 5 RE games. Like just everything about it is really good and arguably has the best story or one of the best stories an RE game has told.

At first I was skeptical of some of your choices, but you explain your reasoning well, and it really is a good list!

Largely agree with this list, although I'm a bit biased towards both Revelations games. Sunk so much time into both of the raid modes and their honestly both really solid RE games imo. I'd have personally but the HD/home console version of Rev1 up one tier and MAYBE debate bumping up Rev2 one more also.

​@bepohal Not really? I mean depending on how strongly you feel on OG RE1 and RE3make there isn't really anything too aggregious on this list. I would put OG RE1 a bit higher. RE3make I enjoyed but I could go either way. Short and sweet but should be longer and it doesn't have nearly the replay value of any of the other remakes.

Great list! I think my favourite RE experience I've had recently was my time replaying RE Revelations 2 with my bf. We had a great time playing through it together and this time, we made sure to get the good ending and that honestly felt soooo good after my shitty solo playthrough ending hehe! Such a great co-op game! I love how both players feel useful in unique ways and it's something I desperately need another dose of!

Hot Take: Resident Evil Gaiden's battle music is a legitimate banger!

Great video! I loved the Mortal Kombat video despite never playing any of them, so seeing this pop up while I'm working through the series was super exciting. My only note would be that i preferred the chronological method from last months video, i feel like going through the series history and making decisions that way was a bit more varied and entertaining.

Matt, your take on REmake 4 was exactly me. I wasn't exactly against it, but I felt 4 didn't need one. The OG game holds up so well, I would have just much rather seen a Code V remake or a 0 remake. But then I played it and it made me a believer. The game took a gritty more horror focused game where as the OG was more action focused. Ashley went from insufferable to a character to forge a real relationship with. I still really want a Code V and remake tho. I'd kill for an RE5 coop style game for 0 with online play. Has potential to be one of the best ever made.

I was skeptical on REmake 4 but outside of some small nitpicks I think they did great. I agree I think they have room for a potential Code V or 0 remake. I think them both had potential to be great but had big issues. I know Code V is pretty decisive and I'm not huge on it personally, it had its stans. Any game with Claire is a plus for me, Code V remake would be the game I'd be most interested in seeing.

I played and finished RE: Gaiden a couple weeks ago, and I actually quite like it! Definitely not a bad game in my opinion, and it did not deserve all the negative reception that it received back in the day.

Thats a pretty good list overall. I would have swapped the Revelations games personally, but thats just personal preference. Any chance you could do a Castlevania one next??

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says a game doesn’t NEED to be remade because the original is perfect. The point of a remake is not to fix something. It never was. It was to experience the story in a new, fresh, and current lense.

Playing 7,8 and 4 remake in VR is one of my fav things ever. 7 was my first VR game ever. Then I waited till 8 had VR oatch. Played and loved it. Now playing 4 remake in VR. By far the best time I had with games in past 20 years. Being in the environments yourself makes me love capcom.

I think RE: Verse was essentially designed for friends since I can imagine a lot of commentary happening during sweaty moments like being cornered or last into the safe zone.

I agree with this list, but RE7 in VR is the scariest thing I've ever experienced. Even though the VR implementation is pretty basic, and the PSVR has limitations, that experience was so tense and unnerving it elevates that game to the top of the list for me. Worth mentioning that I haven't played RE8 or RE4 Remake in VR yet, but from what I've heard they aren't as intense or frightening as RE7 was.

Resident Evil 7 had Joe Baker. Top tier, end of discussion.

Almost perfect list man! I feel like id have to put zero a smidge higher, but i know thats my bias xD

This was a fun watch, if Matt wanted another game series to do a tier ranking, especially with Halloween getting ever so closer, Silent Hill would be a good shot, you have about 8 mainline games and a few spin offs, not many one of which is an arcade title, it could be an interesting adventure.

I recently got RE: Deadly Silence after milling about it for a long time, and boy am I glad I got it (and a Nintendo DS for that sole reason)! Just having RE on the go (though I’m reluctant to actually take my DS out and about) is so cool!! It’s beautiful and I’m so impressed at the little changes I’ve come across so far in the Rebirth mode. Even if it were just the original version, that’s still very impressive!

I know you said you haven’t finished separate ways but you’ll be happy to find out the boss you thought they cut is actually in the DLC!

For some reason I have a strong affiliation with Dead Aim too, I like the "dead" boat setting. It just works so well with the Haunted Mansion, Isolated Spaceship, or Cruise Liner at Sea. They all hit the nail for me as horror settings. Just so everyone knows RE DS has local multiplayer for portions of the game broken up across the map. Eh Outbreak is the best IMO, but OG RE with multiplayer is god tier.

I dig it! I want a Code Veronica Remake soooo bad! I also want a Outbreak File 3! I'm curious to hear what you think of Separate Ways when you finish it!

Ya know, it's kinda wild, but my ranking is pretty much exactly like yours for the various Resident Evil games, though there are several of the spin-offs that I never got to play, so I appreciate the mention of them and your explanation of them.

21:42 I think a subplot involving a guy who looked like Chris tied to a chair was cut out of Revelations 1 because in early trailers he was talking to Jill and the actual Chris. But in the final game it's just a dummy.

If I remember correctly, it was only the "dual shock" re-release of director's cut that had the horrendous music, not the first director's cut. Maybe I'm wrong but I think there's a distinction to be made.

Umbrella Corps isn't even Leech level. It's a failed experiment Capcom pretends never happened. I mean the game is on nearly on discount every month hoping someone buys it.

Re3 remake I think the other team shot them selfs in the foot by not copying mr.x to nemesis in his sections before transforming. If you do speedrun the the game nemesis feels like he’s on your heels if you don’t he’s nowhere to be found till you hit that chase scene.

I think the reason most RE titles end in a nore action oriented way is because the developers must be thinking the players have already gotten used to the scariness and their over-compensating for the end like in Re7, Re8, Re5

Oh boy, lets see how spicy this ends up being UPDATE: Okay, I think that was a pretty fair tier list, actually. Though I must argue that original RE1 and RE1:DC be switched. As much as people dislike the new soundtrack (which aside from the clown farts, isn't that big of a deal to me, plus _technically_ the initial release of RE1:DC still had the original soundtrack sooooo) it is otherwise a real upgrade from the original. Multiple difficulty modes for new and experienced players, a demo of RE2 and, most importantly, *auto-aim* ! I mean, the original RE1 is plenty playable without auto-aim, but adding that feature back to the overseas release just makes it _so_ much comfier of an experience. Although, full disclosure, I am also an insane person with too many copies of RE1, so I'm a bit biased. Also a little surprised CV is so high. It was always one of those entries that never grabbed me. A shame too, because it feels like it tries to incorporate aspects of RE1 - 3, but ends up being less than the sum of its parts.

Resident Evil Dead Aim is a great couple of hours if you play it with a GunCon. I believe that's the correct way to play this game.

the RE Remake on Gamecube is my favorite as well because that was the pinnacle of that generation, that was my "how in the hell can it possibly get better" in both graphics and quality, it was like a PS3 game in Gamecube and it still holds up imo.

Ganando is kinda a bit cooler than zombie. They serve the exact same purpose as zombie, but have voiced lines. "Un forastero."

Almost forgot about Umbrella Corps. The Metal Gear Survive of RE.

I agree with your list. This was a lot of fun. I am up for remake of Code Veronica, RE5, and even another remake of RE1. Alfred Ashford is that one villain I would love to see come back. He was bizarre, but it is better to remember a villain than to forget and he is up there on my list of interesting villains.

Very good list! I was too young to play the original so called 'tank controlled' Resident Evil games so my journey with the franchise really started with RE4 on the PS2. SInce then I have been hooked though. I have not played every single spin-off or side entry like you but did most of it I have. To me the three remakes are as good as it gets and maybe I am trapped in the moment but the RE 4 Remake is my favorite. I absolutely love RE5 too as one of the best gaming memories ever to me is playing it co-cop with my brother and the Merceneries mode just added hundreds of extra hours to the experience for us haha. Same with RE6, sure the story was all over the place and was too action oriented for many but the Merceneries mode was just so addictve. From the spin-offs I enjoyed Revelations 1 and 2 the most.

Chris's shoulders are so big in RE5 that it looks like he's wearing Samus's armor.

RE7 over Village all day, 7 was a focused horror game with one of the best antagonists of all time, 7 was a masterpiece Village was so high and then so low way more then 7

RE 2 remake and RE7 are the best resident evil games counting with all the DLC content they have to offer. And these are the most tense/scare RE games in the whole franchise.

Umbrella Corps is the Metal Gear Survive of Resident Evils. But I would say Crimson Head as a replacement enemy.

Nemesis for me elevates 3 so much that I've always rated it higher than 2, but I do have to acknowledge that 2 is generally more solid all around.

32:35 now that you mention it…they could have easily used recycled characters for RE7😂 like imagine if Billie accidentally landed on the Baker estate somehow, dealt with the issues there, and running into Chris, somehow managed to clear his name by the end of the game

I think the fact that every mainline game can have a solid argument for the best in the series (yes even 6) is very impressive, and kinda makes me think that RE is the most consistently good series in gaming history. Mainline games only tho, there’s a lot of spin-offs that are just stinkers

I am mostly in agreement with this tier list and the reasons stated for where each game lies I mostly resonate with. Great video overall and am looking forward to more like it. I will die on the hill of Resident Evil 0 being underrated. It's the game that has mechanics from Sweet Home, which is widely known as essentially the predecessor of the Resident Evil series. I was an avid player of Outbreak and Outbreak File 2, (Met some some people online who I am friends with to this very day.) which is why I thought REsistance wasn't really that bad. It is essentially an Outbreak successor with a new cast of unknowns or citizens of RE, each with their own respective special traits and skills. Characters themselves had interesting backstories that ties in with some of the Outbreak characters (Valerie and Yoko). I don't think everyone (if anyone) from the REsistance camp survived, unfortunately. And as far as I know Alyssa is the only canon survivor I know of from Outbreak. Operation Raccoon City was something of guilty pleasure for me. 'Cause when the game was released I played the hell out of it and had tons of fun with it. It was "RE2 REmake" at the time. I see it as a polished turd. Code: Veronica definitely needs a REmake. The only problem I have with it is that it has NOT aged well when it comes to some of the gameplay, especially they Tyrant fight and the final boss. Since Assignment Ada is non-canon, I don't see that being REvisted. I find it interesting that initial reception of RE3 original and RE3 REmake are about on the save wavelength. I'm among the--to what I think is a minority--who thinks RE3 REmake is pretty solid.

Lol MGS3 Subsistence was the gate way for my PS2 online experience too, so glad I got to play both Outbreak and MGS3 online. MGS3 having playable rumble roses characters was one of the weirdest things, but doing wrestling moves in MGS3 was dope😂

The Raid Mode in Revelations I is the only RE online mode worth playing. That alone puts it over Revelations II. That one was just weird..

Damn I forgot RE:Verse and RE:Sistence we’re different games. My memory keeps telling me they were the same shitty game 😂

I'm 100% with you in hoping that CV is the next remaster. Particularly if they add a VR mode for it, RE is so insanely good in VR.
