I Ran Into A Subscriber While Doing My Errands & An Update On My Cataract Surgery

It's been a month since I had my cataract surgery and it seems that I may have a rare side effect, as a result.
And, while doing errands, I ran into a subscriber at Walmart who also recently had cataract surgery. We compared notes. :-)

By the way, I worked for a couple of years as the videographer for surgeries for the most famous Ophthalmologist in the world, Dr. James P. Gills at the St. Luke's Eye Institute in Florida. I learned a lot about eyes because he did almost 80 surgeries a day - one of the rare doctors to do one eye one day and the other the next day. He perfected the foldable lens to replace the extracted old cataracted lens. Fascinating and since I saw tens of thousands of cases, I know your life will be hugely better when both eyes are done!

For some reason our super Walmart has a very tiny garden section. Probably because Lowe’s and Home Depot are right next door and they don’t even bother to compete. And that’s a good idea to use the umbrellas to shade the plants. Thanks Tex! 😎👍

What a great video! I love how you shared about your eye issues please let us know your journey and when you find out more information on what's going on. These types of issues plaguing us all as we age and information is the key to successful outcomes😊 I am legally blind due to an eye condition that is pretty rare. I have had a team of doctors that is just. I know that so often I conditions are not detectable except by the doctors and it's important to keep a good track of our eye health. My vision is stabilized for 5 years now, thank you lord! I also enjoyed your journey through picking new bushes and flowers for your backyard. Hi Gary, what? 😳 please let me know what you find out after you talk to him. Almost every time I go into the office they do the pressure test on my eyes to make sure that my eyedrops are lowering the pressure to a normal range. And then he confirms that my pressure is in the normal range. If it’s not the pressure that causes the glaucoma I wonder what it is? Thanks for the heads up. 😲👍

Hey Steve, the dilated pupil is most likely from the trauma/swelling from the surgery. It may resolve over time but if it's not causing any issues, I wouldn't dwell on it. You probably wear sunglasses outside anyway which would be a good idea just to counter the slightly larger opening of the lens. It sounds like the surgery overall was a total success, nice sharp clear vision which was the goal to begin with. Also, there is nothing wrong with rocking the "David Bowie" look with two different pupil sizes! Honestly I never would have noticed it watching you but I know we are all sensitive to weird changes with our bodies and can obsess over them. On another note, I don't know if you have ever visited Moeller's Nursery in Palm Desert, it's a lovely place worth checking out. PS Gas shot up here in LA at least a dollar a gallon, we are at about $5.50 on average. Some stations are back over $6.

I had surgery on 1 eye first, and yes i had the same perspective of seeing a brighter-whiter view in one eye and a more yellow look in the non operated eye. But that was resolved when the second eye was done. My vision is better now with the cataract surgery as the lens implanted significantly improved my vision that i really don't need glasses. I also decided to have monocular vision, so one eye is focused on distance and the other is on close up. When you determine, if the other eye needs to be done, ask the surgeon if that is a possibility for you. Look at the pros and cons of each. Keith

Hello Steve and thanks for another enjoyable vlog. If I may...I was born with glaucoma (open-angle) and will be 60 in July. It was not found until I was six years old and there is some damage to the optic nerve. I also have a wrinkled retina in the right one which does not bother me. I have not met an eye drop that did not work, at least not yet, and I have been on several over the years. The reason for switching is because of shortages of the product. Are you going to the eye doctor every month for glaucoma? I sure hope not as it is a very slow-progressing issue. I can appreciate your diligence based on your mother's experience. I go every year although the doctor wanted me to come every six months. I made a deal that if my pressure gets higher or if there are any major changes, I will come more often, and in the meantime can I please come once a year? He agreed. Getting your eyes dilated, retina photographed (pupils bigger than your head), and a field of vision test (do you get this test? It may reassure you a bit) is exhausting. I always ask about my pressure readings as they tend to be in the mid-teens (mid to high 20s is concerning). Asking may reassure you also. Welp, this post is long enough, and if you made it this far, Thanks, and have a great day!

Hi TB, thanks for sharing all of this with me. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with this your entire life, I’m glad to hear it’s under control. 👍 and yes, I have had all of the tests and I also do keep track of the pressure readings. Fortunately the eyedrops do keep my eye pressure in the normal range. 👍 my problem is that every drop I’ve taken so far gives me extreme dry and extreme red eyes and that’s why the eye doctor keeps trying different drops to see if some thing can still lower the pressure without giving me such awful side effects. Hopefully, eventually we will find some thing that does the trick. 🤞 Thanks 😄👍

@@steveinpalmspringsca is there enough humidity in your home? The things we need to do, right?!?! My eyes are red, white, and blue! The right eye is red because of scar tissue in the inner corner. Good Luck and I hope you find something that works for you.

If you want some tall plants to try to hide your fence try ornamental grasses. I really like ornamental grasses. They come in different sizes and colors. And your larger pupil is not noticeable. I see an eye doctor yearly because of my diabetes. And my doctor tells me my eyes are doing great.

Hi Samuel, I’m glad your eyes are doing great. We did have ornamental grasses in our front and backyard, but I remove them because they were just so messy. They are beautiful, but they just got debris all over the yard. 😲

I have my 6-month cataract follow-up in a few weeks (hard to believe it's been that long), and I'm a little apprehensive. The side effect I already had that required a third surgery is also labeled as "extremely rare" -' so now I feel like all bets are off!

I keep forgetting that mine were not traditional "cataract," procedures, but were combined with a Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS); so I don't have a typical cataract outcome.

Didn't you try and get white flowers to survive last summer, Steve? I remember you searched all over for flowers and some worked out well but others seemed to struggle.

Hi Legrat, I think I originally planted all of the flowers in pots, but most of them died so I bought new yellow lantana and planted them in the ground. I had three purple lantana still in pots and they managed to survive the summer heat. I never had any white ones. I may have mentioned that I was looking for them last year too, but I wasn’t able to find any then. you have a good memory. 😄👍

My sister had a large pupil for a few days after her surgery. She also has a small cataract forming but hasn’t really noticed a yellowing in her vision. My guess is that maybe the yellowing has to do with the cataract.

I only have had light sensitivity to my eyes. My left eye had cataract surgery on November 1 2022 and it is still bright as ever. My right eye had cataract surgery on March 12 2024. Still not focused. My eye doctor put me on steroid eye drops for a month.

I was able to find confirmation that it is not uncommon for a pupil to be larger after cataract surgery. The muscles that control the iris can become strained from the extreme dilation required for surgery. It should return to normal after those muscles sufficiently recover.
