I've been working as a business-analyst intern for 2 weeks and I already regret my whole existence and the fact that I was born at all. Thanx for the video, it was refreshing and somewhat strengthening.

This content is brilliant, so useful and informative. You might remember I reached out a couple of months back asking what skills/things I should learn as I was just starting a role as a BA. 6 months later, I am now a BA & a SM for my squad. Being a SM confused me a bit in terms of what path I wanted to take next but this video has answered my question. Thank you! Keep up the good work!

@@theagilebusinessanalyst Thank you! For me the Scrum Master role wasn’t, stumbled into due to the amount of changes happening in the department. Similar to you Product Owner is next for me. My supervisor is advising on a Technical Product Owner role within the next year. On that note. I am struggling to map out what technical skills are worth learning. We work heavily with Big Data, so my squad consists of Data Analyst/Engineers etc so I was thinking, Python but I do not want to dive deep into it as I’m not an engineer nor planning to become one. It will be good to get your take. Thanks

@@DavidSillah I see where you are coming from. As PO I'd consider Phyton only as a nice-to-have, not a should-have or must-have. As PO you won't be that deep into code. Are you more interested into the Technical PO role or the usual PO role? The main difference between a technical PO and a usual PO is that the technical PO's product consists mainly of interfaces / apis to other applications rather than to a GUI based front end for business user. Meaning the requirements would rather concern APIs than end user visuals. Besides this; as (technical) PO in your domain I'd recommend learning more about Big Data in general, not necessarily on python level, but in general knowledge level, chances, risks, benefits etc. You should only know "what" and "why" to implement, not the "how" :) (this your engineers will know better)

I've been a Business Analyst, now Senior for 10 years. I'm stuck on what's next, I started to pursue Business Architecture and undergo the CBA exam. Studying independently however, is a pain...any tips?

Good job! Congrats on the change! Now I am a Master degree (field of business analysis) student, working full time as a Scrum Master. I would like to take on the P.O. role in the following years, but also the B.A. just for the sake of it. Do you think it would be possible to become P.O. directly or should I experience the BA experience for some time? Besides that will you do some videos regarding the P.O. role-tips and tricks just like you ve done for BA? Lastly and sorry for that many questions, what resources (books / articles) would you recommend for becoming a great P.O. / BA?

Hey Marius, Thank you :) It is also possible to jump to the PO role without being in a classic BA role first. In big companies, it is unusual to have "junior" product owners, so people without being a BA before. But smaller companies definitely offer these junior PO roles. I think it makes sense to first be a business analyst, before jumping to the PO role. You will be learning a lot on the way. Becoming directly a PO without being a BA first is like becoming a football coach without having been a footballer before. It's possible, but I'd recommend the organic growth from BA > PO. Going forward I will also target videos more interesting for POs. Regarding books for BA, I recommend reading the BABOK for sure. It gives you an abstract framework. For more practical books, I would need to look the titles up which I've read throughout the years. Happy to answer your questions :)

Hi! Usually BA becomes PO when he is now an expert in some product, and he can make decision about this product. this happens even in the outsourcing projects, when BA after couple of years working on one product becomes a PO. or when BA cas a huge expertise in one domain working with a lot of similar projects, and he can become then a PO of the similar product. was it your way ? tell please more details :) I'm also more interested in PO, then Scrum Master or other toastmaster roles, I prefer working with product and people then with only people.

I do agree with your points. For me it's the same, I also enjoy working on a product and with people, instead of only people management. I've decided to step up to the Product Owner Role and hence keeping product focus with some people management :)

So I basically went from a Business Analyst to a Technical Project Manager, now realizing I should have gone for the Product Owner role. I a'm basically acting as a product owner for one of my projects but my manager and the CTO really want me to be a delivery guy focused on timelines/quality. Not sure what to do here. It's a decent company, but I really need to stay on the product focused path if i'm going to really enjoy my career.
