I put a GoPro on a Steam Locomotive

Ғылым және технология

This video is sooo different from what I usually do.
Locomotive No.3 at Pacific Coast Railroad, Santa Margarita Ranch, California.
GoPro in three locations on the locomotive to help troubleshoot.

    Watching Stephenson gear and seeing the oil burner from the back is always mesmerizing. I've also never seen a lead truck that looks like that - quite neat! Thanks for taking the time :)

    Did a little research. This locomotive was originally built as an 0-6-2T by H.K Porter in 1897 and was converted/backdated for movie use in 1964. That would probably explain the odd design of the lead truck as well as its welded construction.

    It's been almost a year since I filmed this and I have not heard if the issue has been identified or resolved. The crew and volunteers at the Pacific Coast RR have had their hands full with other projects (including moving the former Swanton Pacific!) and restoring another steam locomotive. I'm sure I'll hear more about it when I'm there next month for the Best of the West Show.

    As I can see this is an oil burner, with a Stephensonian valvegear, must be a retrofited old engine. Otherwise really cool video!

    An oil-burning steamer is much preferred out west vs. a coal burner. There are zero concerns with burning embers being blasted out of the stack and starting trackside fires with an oil burner.

    @@Patriot1776 Yes, oil burners are much better suited for dry environments, where possible trackside fires are a concern. Where I live (really far from the USA) we only have 1 oil burner steam engine because the fuel for it is really expensive nowadays

    @@arongyorffy3070 I live at one end of what used to be the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway in the U.S. The preserved steam locomotive that runs on the trackage is fueled with waste motor oil sourced from area oil change garages. So even that's prohibitively expensive where you are?

  • @arongyorffy3070

    @arongyorffy3070

    @@Patriot1776 As I said, I live on the other side of the planet, where oil in general is pretty rare, so every type of oil products cost more than in the USA. In my country most oil-burner steam engines used mazut for fuel until recently. In 2020 enviormentalist gourps lobbied the goverment to ban mazut, which they did. Waste oil was already illegal to burn here for a long time. So nowadays we can only feed our oil-burner steam engine disel-oil. 1 liter of disel oil costs about 2 dollars here, so in order to fill up the 11 000 liter fuel tank of our oil-burner steam engine you need to spend like 22 000$. Coal is just simply cheaper, and is not yet banned by radical enviormentalist.

    Those wheels on the front pony look quite worn, you can't see much of a 'cone' on the tread and not sure what's going on with the line where it's almost delaminating!

  • @mollyengelmanmedia

    That wheel has apparently been repaired before, and is exactly why we put the camera on it.

  • @fredlotte2601

    It looks like each wheel has its own bearing. They aren't fixed to the axle as would be the case for a normal RR axle. So the taper shouldn't matter and neither should the diameter (within reason). Maybe the axle position is canted slightly so that the wheels don't roll in the direction of travel. If only one wheel has problems then maybe the axle is bent. Great video.

  • @rot_studios

    Why is the suspension on pivots? To maximize wheel->track contact or something?

  • @spacebarbepressed6552

    @spacebarbepressed6552

    Жыл бұрын

    The suspension is on pivots because the different axles are linked together by the suspension. This helps evenly distribute the weight of the locomotive across all of the wheels and maintain traction. When one wheel hits a low spot, the wheels ahead and behind it allow it to drop down, and the same thing happens when a wheel is lifted up, the others push down
