    A coworker bought a mosiaco grande in mango and i thought it was just the most immaculate pen. I had been looking for a pen too buy for my father so I ended up ordering a momento grande 2.0 in sand with a medium nib. Beautiful pen, and he loved it

    I have a love hate relationship with Leonardo pens. They’re overall quality has taken a huge dip over the years, even though the pens are the same price, and the QC is really hit or miss Edit: I totally forgot to put all the hits and only mentioned the misses lol. So the love part is the pens are absolutely beautiful! The shape and design feels amazing to write with and to hold, when you get the good pens, they write like nothing else and it’s like a dream. My best Leonardo is my Furore in blue galaxy with gold trim. The engraving on the barrel perfectly lines up with the clip, and also perfectly lines up with the nib! The amount of precision and craftsmanship is clearly evident when you hold one, and it is truly a blessing to have in my collection

    The steel nibs are made by Jowo but are tuned by Leonardo. Gold nibs are made in house by Leonardo. I love Leonardo pens. I am definitely going to purchase this model. I have a number of pens related to the Baobab tree. If I am correct, the sap is red, called Dragon's Blood. I have the MZG with the Sand resin and a Furore with a purple resin. The Furore came with a steel nib, made by Bock. Leonardo has since switched to Jowo. I also get a gold nib which is made by Jowo. I had to get another section with the gold nib as the nib collar for the Bock is different than the Jowo. In any case, it is a wonderful pen, regardless of the nib. I think Leonardo makes the best Italian pens, currently.

    only the Fenice gold nibs are made in-house, and they are a limited production. The "normal" gold nibs they use are Jowo as well.

    My favorite soft jowo is a #5 14k nib I got maybe 3 years ago give or take a year. It took me forever to tune it to my liking. Finally put it in an Opus 88 Halo with a third party juicy ebonite feed and it is my favorite pen. I also have a #6 soft 14k jowo nib in an Opus 88 jazz with a third party ebonite feed and it is spectacular. And a #6 14k soft fine in a mzg leonardo with their ebonite feed and out of the box it was also spectacular and not qujite as soft as the one I have in my opus 88 jazz. The steel ones are alright, I use several, but it seems that this is one place for gold nibs.

    I’ve had my Momento Zero in mango for two years and it still enchants me. (I’m a sucker for anything orange.) For my medium hands it is ideal in weight (I don’t post it), balance, section, and size. The 1.1 mm Jowo nib is a glassy smooth delight. I also have a Leonardo F nib which writes nicely. It’s not quite perfect; it does dry out after some days. All told, though, my best pen.

    1. That's a sharp-looking pen. 2. Off-center nib slots seem to be a thing that occurs now and then. If inevitable, maybe someone should have a look at each nib before it goes out. I wonder how long that would take and how much that would add to the cost.

  • @Doodlebud

    Yeah it happens, just a numbers game. When its small like on this nib it doesn't really effect things. The case needs to be made to inspect every single nib to this level (thousands upon thousands) VS just send a replacement nib if its needed. My guess is replacing a nib is much more cost effective

    @@Doodlebud yes the gold has some nice variations, the steel ones are just bouncy as you discovered. They look good and that’s why I choose them over the regular EF. Initially I had more hope but I realized there’s little to no flex to have. Also the elastic are a bit wider than the non elastic (which makes sense) and makes me wonder if I ever buy another Leonardo it’ll be a regular one :)

    Love that you just got the exact same pen, just with silver accents. It is beautiful and known as the tree of life. I believe Leonardo missed out by not creating a pen stand that looks like the African Baobab. I have a lot of samples inks and this won’t touch the sample inks. I don’t wish to use this as a dip pen. Would you recommend pulling the nib to fill with a syringe or only fill it properly using the mechanism?

  • @Doodlebud

    @Doodlebud

    Жыл бұрын

    Pulling out the nib to fill it each time is not the ideal way to be filling the pen. You do risk creating damage everytime you do that. If possible, I would recommend filling via the piston mechanism.

  • @jeffroberts532

    Great review of a gorgeous pen! When you pushed the nib to flex & it did not return to its original state, isn’t that known as “springing” the nib? In structural engineering terms, you went beyond the plastic limit.

  • @Doodlebud

    @Doodlebud

    Жыл бұрын

    Springing is usually more of the the tines coming apart or the nib lifting off. This time it was a little different, but yes... I discovered the plastic deformation threshold :)

  • @JohnANellis
    @JohnANellis Жыл бұрын

    I have a Leonardo I bought last year. The build quality is horrible, the piston was loose and they don't give you the tool to tighten it. The tool is extra. I just used a tool I have from another company. The pen slides out of the hand after a few minutes of writing. The plastic cracks really easy as well. Capped the pen dries out in under 2 weeks, about a lamy quality of sealing. Then there is the nib. It burps a lot and had to be tuned. Had babies bottom. I really like the look of these pens and wanted to like it, but I can't. I could never recommend a Leonardo to anyone nor will I ever buy another. Maybe yours is one of the lucky ones. I don't know. From looking around I'm not the only one that has issues with Leonardo pens. Great video for the pen you got. Oh, I bought my first 2 Leonardo pens at goldspot both had cracked caps. Customer service on that return was not pleasant. My current and last Leonardo is from nibsmith. I could never recommend goldspot over goulet pens or at all really. Keep up the good work. The video is great and that pen does look cool. Love your videos man. Sorry I ranted on your comments, but I couldn't stay silent.

    Another great video as always! I won't buy Leonardo anymore. Each pen I buy from them is worst than the last. The only usable nibs if theirs I have are replacement ones and now I can't just unscrew the housing it's a deal breaker. I got a MZ Grande that has a steel nib with an ebonite feed that was so bad it would not write but ink poured out of the pen all around the circumference of the feed. It's slightly too small. After heat setting an 18k Edison nib I had and fiddling with it I finally got it writing but if it lays on it's side or is turned upsidedown capped for too long it still bleeds ink making it unusable outside my desk. And don't get me started on having to pay 24 dollars for a stamped aluminum "wrench" to make the piston proper. I could have sent it back yes but after 5 Leonardo, each worse than the last, I'm convinced they cherry pick the ones they send out for "review". Glad you had better luck than me 🫠 I'm glad you got

    @@ecummins8650 the first two were really super nice quality... Except for the nibs. I've got one from 2019 that has only 2 cap rings and no metal in the section. It is a blue celluloid so I had a custom 18k medium architect made by fpnibs that cost more than gas but I absolutely love it. The others (except for the glued in one) I replaced with Edison steel or 18k nibs. Starting with the 3rd on the barrel threads are cut so rough that their metal controllers are grinding then away a little at a time so I don't use them much. They're beautiful pens but for 200 bucks and a steel nib I want percise fit and finish at a minimum. I don't care if you carved it out of pure diamond with your bare hands. I shouldn't be buying $7 jinhaos that have better QC. I still feel like the stores and Leonardo know it's a problem because the only reviewer that had problems out of the box salvidori probably made it right for free to save face. Worse I feel like I can't sell them knowing they have problems so I'm stuck with tubes of pretty plastic that if I use too much will break 🤷

So the Maiora Oro has the same horizontal spaghetti resin but with an ink window. I have just the 1 Leonardo pen; MZ Blue Hawaii. When I first got the Blue Hawaii, I thought I would be hooked on Leonardo. They are nice looking pens, but man Leonardo drops so many pens that it like, I can wait this one out for the next one. After a while, I just lost interest, especially with all the Brooks resin they put out. It might be nice to the get the Blue Hawaii Mosaico though.

    Unfortunately the only nibs I grind are for myself. I'm nowhere near skilled enough or feel comfortable to handle other peoples pens. I would recommend sending it off to a nibmeister to get worked on. Many around, and you can check out a video I did with one of them Josh Lax. His info is in the video description if you're interested. kzread.info/dash/bejne/haGrl8eKd822ZKw.html

    Doodlebud, maybe you can help me. I am new to the hobby and recently decided to buy my first over $100 pen. Our friend @ Inkquiring Minds recommended that I get a Leonardo Zero, so I did just that. I ordered it personalized and tuned from Appleboom. When I got the pen, it was niether personalized or tuned. They courteously replaced it. I now have the pen (a 1.1 stub btw) and it doesn't feel all that smooth to me. I especially feel some resistance when going from the 7:00 postion to the 1:00 position. I don't want to be a problem for Appleboom or give them any sigh moments, if possible. Do you have any comments or advice on how I should handle this? Thank you so very much. I am subscribed and love your videos!!

    I do have a whole playlist on nib tuning and adjustments. First I would reach out to Appleboom to get it taken care of. But if you run into issue, give my videos a look to see if that may help. Really look at the nib under magnification before you start trying stuff.

    I will be getting a new phone in September. Running this channel from my phone is really the only way that suits my schedule as I can edit my videos in little pieces here on there on my phone when I have time. Sometimes its 15 minutes during lunch, or while the kids are in their swimming lesson, or in bed before I doze off LOL.

    you pronounced Baobab in Italian almost perfectly :) I appreciate the efforts of Leonardo but at the moment I prefer Aurora northern Italian austerity at design and for their silky feedback nibs I'm addicted to. They produce a cartridge -converter loaded Talentum that we can buy here at "only" 340 € and has exactly the same nibs and feed of the most expensive Aurora's pens. If you want to try something even more expensive and niche products you can try a Scribo with flex nib as well.They don't produce nins in house but they bought the old Omas machines and gave them to a German producer so nasically it's a whole Italian project with some German. manufacture. I'd like to buy a Leonardo dna with flex nib that works well but it mounts Jowo nibs
