Oh my… My first Leonardo was a steel nib and I thought I would be happy… Oh how wrong I was the hardest one to get was the mother of pearl. I have 10 right now and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon…my love for Leonardo fountain pens I can’t explain it… They are a dream to write with, but sometimes I just like holding them and look at them. Some might think that’s weird, but my 92-year-old mom told me it was OK lol

This is a good review. Thank you. "The price difference is significant ... ." I think that comment is very politely restrained. I have been writing with fountain pens for over 60 years. Yeah, I'm an old guy. I will nearly always prefer gold nibs, though I freely admit steel nibs have come a long way. The prices being demanded today for gold nibs is extravagant, outrageous really. I cannot see the current price of gold nibs justified. Folks like Santini Italia charge what I consider very reasonable prices for excellent quality gold nibs. Those nibs are proprietary. I can see why. If they have a secret, they need to keep it. I am not saying I will not try a Leonardo FP. But I am saying I will choose a gold nib elsewhere.

Santini is an awesome example of value driven price and fair market.. their pens are exceptional and their gold nibs are, well, the gold standard … I love their departure from mainstream yet while holding to the true traditions and craftsmanship/design that set them apart from all the rest. With the price that these others set, with just rebranded “sweatshop” made gold nails, I concur with the gentle herein, that these cookie-cutter nibs for the nib-holders they offer, yes, nib-holders not pens… are, in deed, outrageous.

I think there's a lot of unnecessary bias towards gold nibs. I have a steel flex nib and feed (bought from a nibsmith) which can easily keep up w/ a gold FA nib (also modified for Spencerian). In writing samples, it is not possible to discern which nib wrote which. I have also tried gold nibs like Aurora flex and Stipula flex etc. and was disappointed in their performance. As this is needlepoint flex, both steel and flex can be scratchy and tear the page :) I confess I haven't had much time to play w/ a broad or medium nib w/ flex. But I think how the nib is made and flexes is much more important than the material.

I purchased the Leonardo Mosaico prior to the release of the new steel flex nib. It’s now on my future purchase list. Thanks, Goldspot and Tom for this timely review.

Tom thank you for the wealth of information. Until this video, I didn't know your were carrying an Elastic Fine & Extra Fine nib replacement. The Elastic Extra Fine is going to be added onto my next pen order. Leonardo makes a beautiful pen and no one pronounces the Leonardo name better than you.

WOW! I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR VIDEO. I do not believe anyone has done a video on this topic as well as this presentation has. Thanks. I am trying not to purchase any additional pens until I finally decide to sell some, but the one pen that will consider in the future is one of the two you have demonstrated (or, what is available then). I also appreciate that you sell both directly and on EBAY (and I have purchased multiple pens on both sites and found your service consistently superior, whichever approach I take. Love Goldspot!

I just got a mosaico with a medium nib and I picked up a spare elastic extra fine nib for fun to try it out. My most expensive pen purchase to date and first Leonardo pen.

Impressive and succinct comparison. If you'd seen my handwriting - a nervous, heavy handed lefty printing a ransom note - you'd know that gold and flex is wasted on me. Even so, I'm still tempted, and it's useful information to know, even if I'm more undecided than before.

I have the momento magico in 1.1 stub, and it's not amazing. I'm considering swapping to a fine, or elastico fine nib, so this video helps a bit as there aren't many videos on the elastico nib.

Great review! Unless I am mistaken, you said the steel requires 50% more force but the gold nib seems to require more pressure based on the higher number on the scale. I could be wrong.

The scale shows the weight in pounds and ounces. The steel was registering at about 1lb 6oz (22 oz) and the gold was about 14 oz.

I must’ve missed the part where you explain how to enter the giveaway, but yeah, jus go ahead and enter me in. I probally should win the felx nib; I’m def due for a ‘W’ and plus I deserve it the most… so yea jus go a head & send me that wiggly guy

Why would feedback be any different? Both steel and gold nibs have exactly the same tipping material and it is this that touches the paper, so the nib material should have no effect on whether there is feedback or not.

You would assume that to be the case, but there is one factor that people sometimes forget about gold vs. steel nibs - because gold nibs are vastly more expensive, they are generally produced with vastly more care and tuned to be as good to write with as possible, while steel nibs are rarely ever made by hand and generally not tuned by the manufacturer. This factor does make a difference. This is the reason why some companies' gold nibbed fountain pens are really well regarded, while their steel nibs are considered somewhat mediocre or just bad. I will say that steel nibbed pens of the same model tend to be more consistent in their quality though because they aren't made by hand. You're rarely going to receive a truly outstanding steel nib, but you will also rarely get a bad one unless all the nibs from that batch were defective. Meanwhile, with gold nibbed pens, you are more likely to find that one pen will write amazingly while another one of the same model and nib size may feel scratchy (or on the other extreme, the nib may skip due to overpolishing of the nib point). Or there may be issues with nib flow with one pen and no issues with another that should write exactly the same. Hope that helps.
