This game also contains arguably the best "Timmy fell down a well" joke ever written: at one point an NPC asks you to save his son Timmy, who has fallen down a well. You go down the well and discover that 'Timothy' is a grown man who inspects wells for a living.

While the music being deleted is sadly not true, there is something else about the music which is in my opinion even funnier: Apparently, the music had to be removed due to "legal reasons" and Bioware decided that the only logical thing to do was to steal music from Sonic Fansites. But they even fucked up that and because of time constraints they didn't manage to make some percussion instruments actually play.

There's a bit more to the "time constraints" thing. This game was in development while EA was buying BioWare, and EA essentially told BioWare, "I know you're contracted by Sega to make this Sonic game and so you have to finish it, but if you don't get this thing out the door as soon as possible so we can buy you, we're calling it off." Also, it was more than just the percussion instruments. They messed up converting the MIDI files to work with the DS's sound chip, so there's just instruments missing and other instruments that are supposed to be playing in one soundfont playing in another.

What's funny is Penders' lawsuit didn't just prevent a sequel. It's a pretty fascinating read, he basically derailed the entire series, forced a giant reboot and caused Sega to create new restrictions and censorship rules.

@@EXFrostand Archie’s incompetence is what eventually led SEGA to just cancel the Archie comics entirely (though I wish they had waited until the then-current four-issue series ended. They were doing the classic games, and they ended it at CD, the third game. Had they done it after 3, they could’ve ended things more neatly.), eventually starting a new series with IDW (which has now been integrated into the main canon). Though I haven’t been hearing a lot of good from IDW lately, so maybe we might get an Archie repeat.

I've played this game in it's entirety and managed to add some +2 ng+ as a kid, i only remember the biggest chunks of the game and i really wonder considering you get no exp whatsoever before reaching the last dungeon lmao litteraly the only thing keeping me in was the power trip i'd get out of stomping on the entire game when i was struggling at first

I'll never not be disappointed by this game. This game had the potential to be Sonic's answer to the Mario & Luigi series, but a combination of unfortunate events coupled with a frivoulous lawsuit that not only killed any hopes this game had for a sequel, but also helped kill off the Archie Sonic comics and the Archie Megaman comics to boot, it really felt like everything that could've gone wrong, did.

I had both games at the same time in my life. I got right to the final boss of Sonic Chronicles before I gave up.

The worst part is that the story actually started with Sonic Battle, which introduced the Gizoids and added some actual intrigue and probably the saddest ending in a Sonic game, which then continued into Sonic Advance 3 with a replica Gizoid being part of the story.

1. Yes, they did delete the entire soundtrack. The entire soundtrack that is now in the game, took (I believe) 2 days, and was 90% free sound effects. 2. The emulated version crashes sometimes. 3. The Chao are incredibly broken. 4. It is cannon that Rouge can seduce robots. 5. Cream is broken. 6. Feroz is broken. 7. Super Sonic can die. 8. In the final fight, they both actually don't have a health bar, and instead have a hit count. 9. Shadow and Cream make you basically immortal. 10. Omega has the highest potential damage, (except for the final fight). 11. The space islands (other than the final island of the game) are the reason the game wasn't received well, which in turn stopped it's sales because it was really boring, which is the real reason it never got a sequel: because that combined with the Lawsuit, meant they would only lose money if they made a second.

"BioWare (the main creators of Sonic Chronicles) had a full, originally composed soundtrack made for the game. However, before release they had to pull the stage music out for a variety of legal reasons. Under pressure of this, along with time constraints, BioWare took pre-existing MIDI files (a music composition format) of music from earlier Sonic games from different Sonic fan websites, and added them as the Stage music. The Sonic Community has criticized this decision greatly. Time constraints also made them use an unfinished custom soundfont (a variety of instruments in one file). The white echidna from the comic wasn't created by Penders and was based off of another white echidna from the UK comic. The second one has little or no similarities to Shade, it was her sister named Julie-Su who also looks nothing like Shade and is pretty different in character aside from both of them defecting.

Cheers mate, for that soul who just chugged the game into the beach.

As someone that has played the new game + portion of this game, I can confirm the following: - you carry over all your gear and experience from playthrough 1 - all your characters will level up to the level they reached previously after just one battle on NG+ - None of the enemies scale in power or HP therefore you will quite literally be able to wipe out everything in one or two hits - No much to everyone's disappointment there is nothing else after beating the game a second time. It just loops again and again and again.

Imagine the emotional toil this ending had for a child playing the game, watching as it suddenly promises to self-restart your save like a directive in a spy movie, and not knowing anyone else who played the game who could possibly grasp the depth of your confusion or confirm that: yes, that really just happened. Thanks for sharing the Sonic Chronicles experience with the rest of your viewers, Alpharad

It's been a while since I've watched an Alpharad video in its entirety, I'm glad to see they're still as funny as ever.

I played the shit outa that game when I was a kid and the fact there wasn’t a sequel had me in actual tears. After watching this video, my feelings have not changed.

I want the 2nd game to have all the sound effects being the iPhone Calculator sound effects to make it even worse.

As someone who has played this game more than once, the shadow fight in the toxic swamps is optional. If you chose the right dialogue options he will just leave without fighting you.

Fun fact, if you keep the credits going, Omega finishes them because Tails gets tired, then Sonic falls asleep and Omega calls them stupid meatbags.

Glad to see both Alpharad and the comment section mentioning how, despite the game's technical difficulties, it being a hidden childhood gem.

13:48 The fact this whole attack is so epic and still ends with the fucking stock cartoon sound effect is unbelievably hilarious. Like, imagine if Goku vs Frieza ended like that? Frieza gets cut in half and falls to the ground and you just hear the Nickelodeon splat sound effect?

The deeper Alpharad dives into the Sonic franchise, the more his mind unravels. I can’t wait for him to try and figure out the comics. That shit is borderline indecipherable

I thought the circle closing in was a timer and not something I had to time the overlap of and I kept failing the qte's and had no idea why because they're so fast and it throws so many at you

There's a secret scene where after beating shade. If you have Amy on your team she'll try to break the boulders that shade blocked with and only ended up to get knocked out

Yeah, same! I have a distinct and fond memory of booting it up on my r4 like on three separate occasions, getting stuck after a while each time, and never playing it again. Man, I love that game. Glad Alpharad played it for me so I don't have to, again :)

As a kid, I REALLY wanted this game. I used to enjoy replaying it over and over. I even constantly borrowed (and then "kept") the official guidebook from the library. Nowadays, I can only play the first half of this game on a lazy day....

This is one of my FAVORITE guilty pleasures

this game could not have been brought to light in any better way than jacob's conflicted journey with it. perfectly conveys what this game feels like to experience

I love how his reaction to the ending was basically just maniacal laughter

Couple things 1. One simple clarification, the city that was destroyed in the prologue was actually eggmans city, they mention that and the city is still completely destroyed when you get to it 2. I unironically love the aesthetics of the Nocturnus Clan, a super technologically advanced race, leech tech that converts enemy life energy into their own personal health restoration, robots that become more dangerous from actual learning combat capabilities, akin to metal Sonic's actually, titles like Imperator and using Roman legionary rankings for their units, and fuck me they deserved so much better and just more in general, speaking as someone who enjoyed the game

Man, I used to play an unhealthy amount of Sonic Chronicles as a kid. It was my first Sonic game and it just feels like a feverdream in retrospect

Sonic 06 was my first 3d Sonic, which is odd because I knew it was a mess and at that point, I could've easily picked Unleashed or Generations. I totally knew what I was getting into and I think it was kind of a valuable experience despite all :D

I played NG+ in this game so many times as a kid, I can’t help but have a big cheesy grin when I see it again. I also remember how excited I was to see a sequel for the game…

Only reason I played the NG+ so many times as a kid is because I was convinced the ending wasn't real! You can imagine my disappointment after the 5th time me trying it 😅

Fun fact: Apart from being a Sonic game with the worst music but also with one of the best stories, it also is the only one Sonic game that drop a clue about what a echidna on super form would look like. IX, the main villain was always on super form cause he was always using the energy from chaos emerald except at the final battle where player has gathered all chaos emerald and the master emerald, so he goes back to the normal echidna form (could do a fight with super sonic due game explains he used the energy of the citadel)

What actually happened to the soundtrack is that that the songs were complete, but they forgot to put a bunch of instrument samples in the game, making the songs sound very incomplete. If you convert the soundtrack to midi, you'll see plenty of instruments that are there but aren't actually heard.

I remember having this game on my DS flashcard as a kid. I'm glad to know that this game actually exists and wasn't just some part of my imagination.

I played this game many years ago, but one of the most hilarious things I discovered about it was that Big the Cat could stun-lock the final boss if you perfected the action command for his fishline attack. Just goes to show how well this game as made, am I right?

I unironically love Sonic Chronicles, its a BAD Sonic game, but, i see the potential it had, and despite certain moments like arriving at the Kron Colony without equiping Shadow and Knuckles, the fact the hub music is unfortunately halfassed, and those damn robots that auto revive after praying they just effin' die, i still enjoy playing it from time to time. And the fact its getting the 06 Treatment and getting a Fan Remake fills me with so much Copium that makes me feel justified for my feelings

@@bend7726 Yes, tho the devs like calling it a "Reimagining" since their changing and adding so much. There hasnt been a Dev Update for a bit but they said they'll only give updates when their satisfied with what they're willing to show

I played this game probably 5 times through and kept looping every time. It’s not a great game but the nostalgia goes hard for me

RIGHT THERE!!! 11:46. That blue crystal golem looking dude is where I got my username. They are the Zoah. I was stuck on that planet forever because I was a dumb kid and forgot about over world abilities. I grinder away and over leveled on random encounters. Frustrated, I put the game away for a few months to come back and accidentally walk into the final boss room I stomped him to bits and declaimed myself “The King of the Zoah” I have had that same username basically everywhere for years and I am glad it came from one of the sonic games of all time.

Well I mean Shade is by far the only memorable new character from this game. For me at least I miss her Damn it all because of Ken Penders’s Tomfoolery.

I love that that lawsuit not only made it so that this game didn't get a sequel but also made it so that this game stopped being canon to the Sonic universe.

Dark Brotherhood is by far my favorite sonic game, I'm glad it finally got the recognition it deserved. You can make fun of it but it's far better than boom and I think we can all agree on that.

Legend has it that Alpharad is still trying to get the game to end

Jacob can't complain. His videos tend to end the exact same way this game did. The difference being that he does it for comedy. The game does it for pity

Every song makes me laugh uncontrollably and the thought that this was hurriedly made in a single night makes it even better

That ending sounds insane with the three boss fights in a row and random bioware shilling, but... would you believe he isn't even doing justice to how insane that ending is? Look up the final cutscene if you haven't already seen it. It's a treat. Heck, watch Raocow do a full blind playthrough of this game with minimal guidance. It's insane.

This was my favourite game as a kid next to Unleashed and i still stand by that. Its goofy as hell but had big potential, I feel. I still replay it from time to time!! Happy to see someone else finally play it :)

Sonic chronicles is genuinely one of my favorite sonic games and ds games in general I've played through it so many times
