and Part 3! • The Most OBSCURE Surf ...
CSGO Surf is ubiquitous, one of the most replicated and recognizable mechanics in gaming. In total there are over 30 surf-like games, some that succeed in capturing the feeling of surf, and others that fail tragically. And, there were some games that blew my mind for their ingenuity.

Hey man great game you really have the best 3D aerial movement I don't understand how the strafing mechanic in FPS hasn't evolved in your way it's simple accessible and fun and despite the fact that your game is still in early access it has a calm, cool and relaxing ambience and I honestly think you've made the best surfing game in the world disgusted to know that a game like this is so unpopular. I wanted to ask you how you coded the ability to strafe in the air with the forward key?

8:10 the update to the Roblox surf just made it so maps made with slightly bumpy curved ramps now get picked up on more, as the character picks up every small change no matter how small. It also the makes the physics essentially confused enough that it just restarts you. This happens on quite a few maps, just usually they do not appear in server list much as people don't want to play buggy maps. Also there are simple differences in height of character, strafing, gravity and others, which can be seen in channelog in game

Really cool video. Correction though: Vivid Surf is UE5 which is why its so heavy to run. I think the idea is to allow creators to not have to bake lighting by using Lumen (software ray traced lighting) tech but its very heavy and I ended up not using that feature on my 2080S. Vivid surf was a pretty cool standalone. Id say the surf feels 'looser' and the speed physics behave differently. Was fun to play and relearn the surf physics

Insanely good video. When i first found out you could surf in roblox i was awestruck for like a week but this video gave that same feeling again and again every few minutes. The editing was perfect, wasn't show offish or distracting (like the editing of 90% of youtube videos these days) and the focus was on the games. You showcased games with only a few steam reviews. Most "i played every ____" videos aren't this high quality and don't go as deep into their respective topics but still get so so many views but you went to the bottom of the iceberg and back and to do it on a such a niche thing like surf is admirable. Maybe i'm biased because i play surf but it's still objectively a really good video.

CSS will always rein supreme in surf, nothing else competes in my opinion. Have talked few people on CSS servers that learned about surf from Roblox and found their way to CS eventually. Interesting phenomenon to have all these young players getting into such an old game. Some of them seemed to be really good at surf too which is cool to see. I’d bet half these Roblox players weren’t even born the first time I tried surf. The community still being alive today is a testament to how great surf is!

I wish there was more freestyle type maps in modern cs. I used to only surf in surf_ski back in the day on 1.6. A lot of other people did the same finding their own flow and style for the map. We looked at it kind of like a skate park rather than levels or clearing gaps or breaking time trials. It was all about style.

Hey love the video! I've played a lot of movement based obbies around 2004, I got into surf later around 2010 in TF2, but I was more wondering if you've ever heard of Bunny Track in the Unreal Tournament games? Bunny Track was my childhood and it was just a very basic obby with jump puzzles etc, but it had one cool mechanic: there is a mechanic in all UT games, where if you double tap a direction, you side dodge in that direction, you can use this horizontal momentum to shoot yourself off of small slanted surfaces. I was wondering if you had ever played it, and if not, I recommend checking it out for yourself, it's what i grew up on and there's still a tiny niche community left, albiet very scarce. If you like surf and weird obscure custom obby maps, try bunny track in unreal torunament 99, theres a ton of dead servers still running you can try, I'd love to see you cover it, no pressure tho, love your content either way

Thanks for calling it high quality- at the time i basically just ripped a bunch of maps from cs go and randomly cobbled them together in blender and threw them into unity because it was mostly a proof of concept to see if pixel textures & pixel animations could work & if surfing could be realized in webGL with the tickrate lag.

You should try Urban Terror and it's Jump maps. The game is based on the quake3 engine and has really good movement mechanics. With the game being over 22 years old, it has a ton of maps for different skill levels too. Just know that you don't use A+D, but just hold sprint and W and do the rest with your mouse. Doing smooth curves with your mouse will allow you to gain speed. It's almost like drifting, but the more you are sideways, the faster you can go. There are icy maps which is somewhat comparable to surf in source games, and regular jump maps, which are more focused on b-hopping and walljumps

Glad you highlighted slide in quake, but slide and surf have completely different settings so they arent the same game mode. Same goes in 1.6, as all slide_ maps are played on default settings (10aa) and surf maps were originally created to only be played on 100aa. Same goes for quake 1 as the air acceleration is on default values so they are considered slide instead of surf. Unfortunately csgo lost sight of this and most mappers dont actually understand the difference and they tend to label surf maps as slide when the movement is nowhere near the same.

btw, yes, there are savestates im roblox surf, theyre just really janky you have to do /p (practice), and then you have to do /save and then a name for the save where you want to save to load it, you have to do /load and then the name of the save you want to load the only problem is that you have to do /load every time you fail

I was hoping Udon Surf was gonna be in here. I only have a small bit of experience with Surf, mostly GMod and I was never all that great at it. But my group of peeps occasionally go to Udon Surf to have some fun for a bit and while it's not quite where it needs to be it's alright. Maybe things can be done a bit better, but from what I know it's pretty solid for a VRChat world. Still not sure how some of my friends blast through the course, they get a good solid second or so on me almost every time lol.

On Bhop pro for mobile you can actually gain maximum speed immediately by jumping and rapidly flicking the camera back and fourth so if you see times that look impossible that's what they are doing. It took me a while to figure it out.

Hey I think you should check out extended movement mod on Gary's mod it Is a very high speed movement mode with the main mechanic being walljumping it is hard to get used to at first but I would love to show you/ anyone the ropes or at least provide you with what's considered high tier gameplay (the game is also tag based with modes like infection but due to the very low player count it might be hard to show that)

Every time I’m reminded of it, I start to think about how letting Splitgate die like it did might be the biggest mistake the gaming community has made in recent years. We had a title that truly tried to push the bounds and do something that hadn’t really been done before, and it did it well. The mtx wasn’t overbearing or greedy, the gameplay was great, I never had any issues with hit registration, it was well optimized. It did everything right. On paper, it was almost perfect. Why didn’t it succeed?

Tower Unite also has surf and bhop, but its pretty jank, it was a good attempt at recreating surf but the way it was made makes it glitchy and if you dont have the right items equiped, you straight up cant surf, and you also can change your size to change your weight wich is extremly op but really fun at the same time

Gorilla tag surf is suprisingly good. You have to angle your hand perfectly to gain speed and to not slide off the wall. Sad that its only on one of the maps, i would love to see a modded map for surfing in gtag. Great video too, nice work

Just want to add that CS 1.6 also had trick surfing not just speedrunning. You mentioned Hald side surf. You can actually do it fully instead of A and D you user W and S. Also backwards surfing which is self explanatory. Ofc doing these would mean that you know the map without pretty much looking at the screen. :D
