Elite Dangerous[a] is a space flight simulation game developed and published by Frontier Developments. The player takes the role of a pilot (colloquially referred to as "Commander" or "CMDR") of a spaceship, and explores a realistic 1:1 scale open-world representation of the Milky Way galaxy, with the gameplay being open-ended. The game is the first in the series to attempt massively multiplayer gameplay, with players' actions affecting the narrative story of the game's persistent universe, while also retaining a single-player mode. Elite Dangerous is the fourth game in the Elite video game series. It is the sequel to Frontier: First Encounters,[11] released in 1995.
Having been unable to agree to a funding deal with a publisher for many years, Frontier began its Kickstarter campaign in November 2012. Pre-release test versions of the game had been available to backers since December 2013, and the final game was released for Windows in December 2014,[1] with the macOS version later released in May 2015. A "preview" version of the game for Xbox One was later released via the Xbox Game Preview Program in June 2015 during Microsoft's briefing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015,[12][13] and was fully released in October 2015,[14] while a PlayStation 4 version was released on 27 June 2017. Elite Dangerous additionally supports all PC virtual reality devices.[15][16]
Elite Dangerous Odyssey, which adds first-person shooter play on planetary surfaces and inside bases to the game, does not support virtual reality. Instead, the on foot player traverses these environments while wearing VR goggles with absolutely no depth perception, which is normally provided by a virtual reality experience. This effectively limits the player to viewing the environment through a 'static rectangular window', much like carrying around a large 'viewing monitor' directly in front of the field of view. [17]
By the end of April 2015, Elite Dangerous had sold over 500,000 copies, with Frontier Developments expected to generate £22 million from sales.[18] As of 15 January 2019, cumulative sales of Elite Dangerous exceeded 4.3 million franchise units, composed of 3 million base game units and 1.3 million Horizons expansion units.[19] In April 2020 the sales of Elite Dangerous base game units had passed 3.5 million.[20] During an interview published on 23 October 2020, Frontier CFO Alex Bevis announced that Elite Dangerous had generated more than £100 million of revenue.

Yes, before the upgrade, you were THE SHIP and you couldn't walk around on foot anywhere. A lot of space games are now under pressure from Star Citizen to let you land and walk around in space stations and on the ground, and maybe even walk around inside your ship in the future.

A huge tip to players who are curious to try elite dangerous after this. In the settings you can program a button to set your ship throttle to 75%. When in super cruise heading to a destination, If you activate that throttle setting at 7 seconds on the clock “0:07” You will always come in for a smooth entering and you’ll never have to turn around or emergency exit to get back to your destination.

In supercruise it goes into c's to display how much the speed of light you're traveling (I believe it was soft capped at around 2011c or something but that takes a long time to reach). If you go "slower" however it changes to different units, such as Mm/s (Megameters per second) with the slowest being m/s (meters per second). Ls would be the distance measured in light seconds. It's all pretty simple once you understand the units, but it's probably easier for everyone outside of the US.

Ive been playing elite off and on for years now, i gotta say, there is zero comparison to star citizen. Elite is a 1 for 1 scale galaxy with populated sections, aliens, galactic bodies now with odessy you get first person that finishes the immersion. Star Citizen is an expensive, pay to win cash grab that doesnt work and is hugely limited in size. Im still amazed a game from 2014 is the way it is....

@@TemalCageman Space legs are still a very different experience. Too bad the release was riddled with ongoing performance issues, which pretty much excluded a lot of people using low & midrange systems. I also think they should eliviate some of the issues of the long distances & slow travel times. Picking up speed while escaping a planets gravity for example takes about 1-2 minutes sometimes, which feels even longer since you can't actually do anything during that time. Same for some supercruise distances to other stars, which really should allow for a microjump (generally for bodies at a certain mass threshold). It's just very tedious and kind of a chore and that all got kinda worse with Horizons & then Odyssey. On foot experience has similar issues, or rather also adds onto existing issues, such as dying being very punishing in combination with the distance traveled (and with the all its time put into it) being lost. That's really my main complaint and why I'm not sure if I'll return, even if I ever get a new GPU, which hopefully compensates for the FPS issues in certain on foot situations.

I feel like elite is 95% of what I want with the other 5% being more curated content and ship interiors. It would not even be that hard, most of the ships are already modeled, with the only parts not modeled being modular. a size 6 cargo bay on a conda would be the exact same on a corvette or a python. New Player Tip: You can set your ship to auto-pilot to a target in super cruise, so you don't have to think about speed and alignment. This way, you will never overshoot your target, and will drop right where you need to; at least in space. Elite Dangerous is an amazing spaceflight game, probably the best one I have played, it just has a steep learning curve, but it's well worth the time to figure out. On-foot gameplay is only a recent addition, and most of the gameplay takes place in your ship. The mistake you were making with approaching station while in supercruise is you want to keep your throttle at 50-75%. Also, when you are scanned by security in a settlement, you have to comply. If you have any stolen goods on your or stolen identity, they will become hostile. You can delete your stolen identity before they scan you.

In all honesty, this game was absolutely RIVETING doing cargo runs under the influence of psychedelics. Once you level up to being a glorified taxi driver ("tours"), you can make 30× the money doing one mission with twelve jumps vs a cargo haul with four. They may take a while but mathematically is still a faster credit earn than hauls especially if you take scans and trade along the way. Still a grind I can't see myself going back to yet :(

When your eta hits 7 seconds to arrival while in supercruise, decelerate until your throttle hits the blue zone, and keep decelerating until you're going as slow as possible while still being in the blue zone. This means that you'll stay around 7 to 8 seconds to arrival all the way until you're close enough to drop out, and you won't get caught in a gravity well and overshoot.

The main difference between Star Citizen and Elite is, that Elite is a sandbox simulating the whole galaxy based on astronomical data, while Star Citizen's world is restricted to a limited number of planets which means they can handcraft a lot. Star Citizen is more trying to give you a space adventure, while Elite is more of a simulation. Hard to say though because SC is still in Alpha. There's a lot of science in Elite actually [insert lont-time-player rant].

I kind of felt it was the other way around? Elite is more space adventure and Star Citizen is more simulation. Seemed like Javee was able to get in and get his bearings in Elite pretty quickly and start having fun without much hassle (other than over-shooting planets). It took me three days just to learn how to properly land and take off in a tiny ship in Star Citizen (and still takes me like five minutes just to properly land my drop ship in that game).

There were also several cuts in the video where I was sure he was struggling with mechanics/bindings. 😀 Believe me, elite is a simulation at its core. You can toggle off flight assist and control your ship as a free falling object in space. The galaxy is based on scientific data, also simulating orbits and everything. I don't even have landing assists installed and you can do everything in this game manually. I'm playing Elite for more than 6 years now and it sure has become more beginner friendly, but not by taking things away but rather by adding assistance. Been playing ED exclusively in VR since beta. For PC players, play with Voice Attack. It'll add so much more depth and excitement. If you have the option for VR and a flight stick, take it. Easily one of the greatest experiences. The downside: Odyssey VR is a problem. Once you are on foot, it project a screen to play on that kills all immersion. If you're new, the game is worth it. There is so much to see. It's breathtaking. In VR there's a feeling of anxiety that never goes away. You're always paranoid about the next jump. It could be a black hole, a spastic neutron star, multiple dwarves/black holes, a Thargoid, or even the Salami killing space wizard. Or something nobody's ever seen before. Every jump is a risk, and you're not always guaranteed to finish the jump... Oh, and Treasure Planet, aka Raxxla.

I'll share my ED tip here, I have about 1,000 hours invested in it. If you're having problems covering distances in Elite and you need or want to get to a particular system, far away. Use a fuel scoop and neutron stars. The radiation cone of the neutron star can be scooped and supercharge your frameshift. There's actually a website you can use to help plot a route on the "neutron star highway." Be careful however, you can potentially get trapped in a system if you don't have the jump capabilities to exit, you damage your ship every time you enter the cone, and you can potentially get trapped within the cone causing a canopy breach and death. With an engineered Anaconda FSD, my jump potential is like 160 LYs. I traveled to Sag A* using them.

Well some basics for flying: That circle drawn around star is drop out zone, you will drop from supercruise and take heat damage if your course gets inside it. Also when you get close to your targwt (some 11 seconds or less in clock) drop down throttle to "blue zone", that way you don't overspeed. Plus there are a lots of ship missions from ship's menu at space stations if you do not care for on foot missions. (And when it comes to ship to ship combat, getting to combat with your starting ship with default weapons and shields is like trying to hunt a bear with an airgun. )

Some folks are also mad because the console release was cancelled. If you enjoy Elite, you'll probably enjoy Odyssey. Nice to see the gameplay on foot. I played 80 hours in VR with a HOTAS, did mining, trading, fighting and exploring, but in the last expansion so ship only. Was still one of the greatest VR experiences. Dropping out of a system jump and seeing a big sun was jaw dropping. I only stopped because it took way too much time to earn money for bigger ships and I didn't want it to be my life. Why do developers always go for "you have to play 1000 hours to have the best ship" in mmos? Isn't 50 hours already a high number today? We all have so much to do and so few time. I miss games like Freelancer, Starlancer and most important, Freespace 2.

it is nice to see someone just picking the game up not knowing anything about it, and having fun (well what looks like fun) figuring out how it works. There is a lot of grind to come, and even more fun to be had. I have been playing ED for over 1000 hours on steam and i have it on console. I enjoy the fact that you make your own story. There is no set way to do anything. I literally just finished a 5000 ly journey for an engineer, and am now grinding to unlock them. There is so much to do, and I find it helps that you set goals for what you want to do in the game. short term, long term, and stuff you can do in between so you dont get burnt out. Elite in my mind is not dead, boring, empty, or pointless. The game is not for everyone, and each commander does their own thing. however if you have not already, i would strongly suggest finding a squad to fly with. They can teach you more, and make your day in space more entertaining than it ever would be flying alone. Good luck in the Black commander. o7

Ok, I commented on Star Citizen saying you should play this; happy to see you did. Being said, few things; One, on your left side panel; you can activate supercruise assist. Use this to help flying. The letters and all that have meaning. LY is light year. C mean constant or the speed of light so you can travel 0.58C or 0.58 times the speed of light. For other measurements, you’ll use the imperial system; Km is kilometers, if no notation it’s meters, and the only odd one is mms which is million meters. It’s a lot of numbers and stuff to think about, but if you zoom out you’d see how big the map is. It’s a 1:1 of the MilkyWay. You can land on majority of planets, and you can land where ever you want. You start to realize how long it takes to run 5 kilometer. Currently I’m out in Colonia which is 22,000LY away from the Local Bubble (where majority of the stuff happens). For scale, I’ve been flying for around a month; granted stopping here and there and scanning stuff, and I have a fulltime job but still… 22,000 light years. When I finally docked, I sold my data for over 100,000,000Cr. “The map is massive” is an understatement. A lot of it is empty space, but even with it being mostly empty space, you find some pretty cool stuff.

It’s grindey as all hell but there’s a reason why I have over 300 hours into it Elite Dangerous is a niche game within a niche genre but as far as space sims go, you really can’t do any better. If you’re accustomed to more casual experiences like No Man’s Sky, then Elite Dangerous is almost guaranteed to overwhelm you.
