Hellpoint has actually gotten a lot better. It's less stiff, the platforming is actually doable (it doesn't look like it, but you CAN make that jump), and the atmosphere is pretty interesting. My brother liked it a lot. Just don't play it on local co-op. The game really can't handle it. Borderline unplayable.

Me, playing Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition when it was new, first time ever playing anything with a controller as someone who keyboard and moused everything before, or used a joystick (primarily for flying and driving, but also for platforming back in the Amiga days): - died because I sucked at using the Dualshock, falling off a cliff - died because I botched a jump - died because GfWL just sucks and did weird things like hijacking my control authority while I just was moving around and suddenly couldn't stop anymore, walking myself off into the eternal depths - died because I botched a jump again - died because I still haven't quite figured how to Dualshock, again, falling a long way while trying to circle a zombie... - died because I botched yet another jump - died in the Capra Demon boss fight because somehow the camera was stuck in a fricken corner, or maybe it just was me again still not understanding the concept of a controller, but that was just a vague assumption. Anywho, my cam was stuck and I couldn't free it, but I finally died the first time in that game to an actual enemy!

'Twas a strange, janky, yet peculiarly endearing game once you got into it, as I recall. A certain amount of control scheme frustration, to be sure, but once you figure out where the mouse input translation falls on a scale of "relative" to "absolute" (I think it was kind of a bit of each, which added to the jank feel)... you could semi-reliably hit enemies, even specific parts of them! Which was way cool for a game out of that time period. =)

It's... Well, it's like you saw in the video. The idea was nice, but execution left much to be desired. Even as a kid back then, when you have a bit more patience to try the latest game you bought (got this from some bargain bin way back when) and are generally quicker in picking up weird controls, this was just too damn clunky. Eventually I just played by using the numpad 4 and 6 buttons, to make the sword swipe left and right, because the mouse didn't really work that well. If it had better controls, this might have been real fun, especially since the environments were fun

I wasn't rly into dark souls at that time but after beating this game I went to the shop and got all dark souls right away haha. Really good game, it gets harder and you can make it even more harder with some items in game (you can lv up or down enemies) and those moon/spaceship cycles give it some more mechanics and paths. Certain areas are only available during certain times. There're a lot of builds and enemies are greatly affected by elements so you might end up with couple weps for certain areas/enemies instead of run 2h sword whole game. (but you can beat most of the game with a fcking laser glove haha)

From Below's Steam reviews: "Shadow of the Molasses is a game where you spend the first 20 minutes staring at a boat. Clouds pass overhead, a light rain begins to fall, and somewhere off in the distance you can hear the developer pleasuring himself while muttering "Yeaaaaah. Are you enjoying my ART? Then you arrive at a beach. You climb up a wall, then walk down some stairs, stab some red floating diamonds, climb up another wall, then - and this is the tricky part - you walk down some stairs. During this journey you will eat several food items off the floor and drink from many a puddle. But then, you put a thing in a thing and take an elevator up higher. This is subversive, you see, as the game is called BELOW and not ABOVE. You'll quickly realize that navigating the environments is a lot more tedious than navigating to the Steam refund page. When you get there, you're gonna want to select "It's not fun" as the reason and type "Firmly entrenched up it's own ♥♥♥" in the notes section."

The exploration is what does it for me. Everytime you reach a new area or level which usually has such a specific and unique look to it always makes me stop and just absorb the new environment for a moment. Going through an area for the first time is the best feeling in the game for me: fighting off new enemy types, finding all the (hidden) items, opening up shortcuts, adding more pieces of lore to the gigantic lore puzzle that DS is, it's all fantastic. In contrast to many others, I usually enjoy the areas a lot more than the bosses cause I really play these types of games purely for the exploration and not for the combat. Also the reason why I really hate having to do NG+ runs for trophies because it takes away this element of surprise and exploration.

    2 жыл бұрын

@@chillhour6155 Prey was actually pretty mediocre. It was great for maybe the first 15 minutes when they put some the mechanics like portals and gravity manipulation to good use but it's clear they exhausted all their ideas after that and they basically just resorted to using them for padding (for example walking on a gravity path on a wall to reach a switch to disable a forcefield and then backtracking on that gravity path. Wow, great puzzle. Great setpiece. 10/10. Oh and then there was the portal maze towards the end which was just god awful and annoying) they never do anything creative with them again after the first couple of levels. On top of that the game was boring since there were absolutely no consequences for dying (enemies stayed dead and aside from having to do a bit of walking you didn't lose any progress at all) and most of the enemy designs were blatantly stolen from other games. Also the weapons, despite their exotic appearances, were incredibly generic. The alien rifle was basically just your average scoped assault rifle, the not-a-cyberdemon arm was just a stronger assault rifle with a grenade launcher instead of a scope, and the acid gun was literally just your average shotgun (shit, they couldn't even be bothered to give it some cool acid effect like making enemies desolve. You just shoot enemies and they fall over just as they would if you shot them with a standard shotgun). You could easily swap their models with a scoped M16, an AK-47 with a GL, and a pump action shotgun of your choice and nothing would be out of place. The closest thing it had to a creative weapon was the leech gun and that was just limited to how you got ammo for it. When it came to actually using it, ice ammo was basically just a generic short range flamethrower (granted it froze enemies instead of setting them on fire), plasma was just... a typical plasma gun akin to Doom, lightning was just a Q2/Q3 style rail gun, and the sunbeam was just a laser. Also the spirit walk thing was pretty much pointless and might as well not have even existed since they never did anything interesting with it mechanically. The most you ever needed it for was to spirit walk through a forcefield to flip a switch to disable it. They were so lazy and uncreative there were times when the switch was almost directly on the other side of the forcefield. Honestly, I'm pretty sure anyone who insists the original Prey was good is just thinking about the first couple of levels. If they actually went back and played the full game, they'd see that it's not as great as they think it is.

What was surprising to learn about Die by the Sword is it was made by Treyarch, the same company that made the good sixth generation Spider-Man games and now one of the studios that alternates on Call of Duty. I bet if they weren't just a CoD studio nowadays it'd be cool to see them give another shot at Die by the Sword as a downloadable game. Also I remember when I first heard of Rune II I originally got excited because I thought we'd get a fun hack n slash with well designed levels like the original, but instead we got a crappy open world that, like you said, feels like a bad attempt at copying Breath of the Wild and Skyrim (being open world doesn't automatically equal "good," the reason why games like Breath of the Wild and Skyrim are beloved is because of how they handled their open worlds to make them fun to explore and memorable).

Die by the sword was a great game, played that in my teens. You just have to get accustomed to the controls and actually use your character's movement as well to give your sword momentum. Back then you had to play it with the numblock and that works probably way better than with a mouse. It's actually fairly consistent and highly rewarding if you manage to chop off little kobolds' heads off. It was buggy and clunky, yes, but a lot of games were back then.

Like weapon use unlocking new moves for one, or the time mechanic... or that every time you die nearly everything but the physical layout of the map can change... weapon buffs that do more than just damage... He gave it a really shallow overview. That sucks but I guess that is what happens when you blast through games like this.

@@Zeybrin He probably gave it a shit review because he thought the game was boring, as he said. I hardly think that playing it more would change that just because the layout changes or weapons give other kind of buffs. But also, if you like it its fine even if he doesnt. Opinions arent right or wrong.

itll probably never be a good game tho cuz the animation and game feel are waaaaay too mediocre, it would need a total overhaul

I can say that Hellpoint became a very enjoyable game, with the sci-fi theme and their own original stuff and ways to play It, except Is a bit too much like a metroidvania and i can do a longer Review on It i played 120 hours already bugfree

It's medroidvanianess is one of its main charms, imo. I loved exploring the levels and finding all the nooks and crannies.

Hellpoint comes out later this month and I'm really excited for it. The Thespian Feast demo is rough but it's based on an old build. You should definitely check it out when it comes out.
