I Pirated 100 Players In Star Citizen: This is What I Learned

Ойындар

I pirated over 100 players in Star Citizen hoping to find out how if they made any money, if piracy is just griefing and whether piracy is a gameplay loop. Fighting against players, CIG patches and bugs I show you what it takes to become a pirate.

3.17.1 did not neuter EMPs and distortions. They changed how components work so that you can no longer oversaturate a component and keep it offline indefinitely with a trickle of distortion damage. I won't be sharing any further details, but this video was pretty impressive and I encourage you to look into EMP/distortion changes as you can definitely disable most small and medium ships w/ a solo Warlock without issue. It's more of a challenge as a solo pirate and the components of your target really matter now, so do recon so you know what you're up against, as you also really need to know what the target is running in order to succeed. Pirate gameplay is a lot more interesting and has an even higher skill and knowledge gap now, which is good considering Cargo Refactor is just around the corner. See you then, I'm sure. Great vid.

Piracy is king. Not gonna lie - people who tell me that they just wanna do their mining and been annoyed with pirates dont understand SC to begin with. This game has PVP written all over it. 95% of the ships are for warfare. 95% of the items available are for warfare. And 100% of the future gameplayloops are at least heavily touched by PVP. Engeniering? Only makes sense when your ship is unser fire. Salvaging? Only after warfare. Bountyhunter? Only with Pirates. Trading and mining needs to be a thing to make the Trade-PVP-Bountyhunter loop possible. I'm a gamedesigner myself and nearly every aspect of SC screems PvP into your face. It is just, that the first gameplayloops as well as the first iterations of the Game didnt (couldnt) have PvP-gameplay in it. So the Backers that got attracted up until recently mostly have been those who like Truck-SIMs and stuff 😁 As SC progressed, the "real" game starts to be more and more implemented and shine through. And so will the Backer shift more and more to be a PvP Player of some kind.

So i was doing this box mission, right? Deep in a bunker for 45k aUEC, when hostiles began spawning and boxes that weren’t mine spawned as well. So i stacked their boxes up while repelling fire from ninetails when the player with the combat mission showed up just before the player with the other box mission. The combat player got incapped do i dragged him over to the elevator where i bargained with him for his life, he paid me 10k i resed him just as the other box player came down. He saw the pile of boxes i made next to the combat player and must have thought he was stealing his boxes and show the combat player as he was healing. Incapped and dbed him and began firing at me. I incapped him and voice commed to tell him that that was rude considering i placed his boxes by the door and out of danger for him. Made him pay me 10k to res before loading the combat players corpse onto his own ship messaged him that i saved his stuff and if he needed a ride i could bring him to his ship. He said no thank and that he could fly his pisces there but then tipped me 50k for the offer. He came back landed his pisces next to the box mission players ship. Set self destruct and walked out to grab his cutlass and corpse. The pisces blew up and killed the other box player and his ship just after he tipped me another 10k for helping with his boxes… was hilarious string of events! SC for the win

Had a similar box mission.... doing Red Wind missions in a Herald. It's kind of relaxing. However, after gathering all three boxes I had to drop each one off at three different locations. First location went without a hitch... easy peasy... the second location, however, I noticed something was off... As I was several thousand meters out from the desolate hab, I noticed three pings on my scanner (I always run a scan before landing at a location just in case, and this time that paranoia paid off). Three red dots popped up on the HUD hovering over the landing spot of the remote drop-off point. Couldn't tell if they were players or NPCs, as once they locked on and started firing at me I cranked up the throttle and jetted off, figured I would double back later but drop off the other package first. So I go to the last location -- an armistice outpost on a planet in the middle of nowhere. Two landing pads, a couple of habitats and a Covalex machine. Simple right? Wrong. As I land, I notice another ship flying in from a distance. I pay it no mind and decide to drop off the box. I loot a few items from the gray containers and then head outside... lo and behold it's a player facing their gun ship directly at the door. I instantly know exactly how this is going to end. While in armistice they couldn't fire, but once you're out of armistice all bets are off. I run over to my ship to avoid getting crushed or them deciding to ship ram me. The Herald is fast but has weak weapons and practically no shields. A few hits and it's going down... HARD. I see them take altitude a few hundred meters above the outpost, as they seem intent on getting a lock and firing on me once I leave the landing pad. Instead of instantly taking off I warmed up the engines, pushed the throttle limiter to the max (but gave it no power yet). Boosted all my core's power to the engines and readied my hand on the throttle lever. Essentially this was going to be a quickdraw with ships. They were in a gunship, I was in a data runner. One good spray and I would be a goner. Instead of going straight up (where you lose a lot of engine power fighting against gravity), I decided to boost off the pad with the thrusters moving forward. So I very lightly gave the ship some altitude (just barely), positioned it away from any objects, and then squeezed the trigger for the thrusters as hard as I could while pulling back on the stick for maximum throttle. Double boosted out of there like a blur, but not before they got off at least three shots on me. They tried chasing up and out of the atmosphere where they peppered my ship just barely, but unfortunately my QT drive wouldn't activate properly, and I couldn't get a lock. Then it would start and stop (perfect timing), so they were able to squeeze off a few more shots and lower my shields. At this point my heart is racing, as I only have one more box to deliver, I'm in a data runner with weak weapons and no shield, and if the engines get hit I'm toast. I decided to just put all the power into the thrusters and gun it at 1,300 m/s until I could get the QT drive working again, which I did, and made a jump... but the guys were still following me, so I made two more jumps and was able to circle back to the second drop-off location. The bandits that were hovering over it were now gone and I was able to land. Unfortunately the box got bugged and even though I delivered it the mission wouldn't complete. 🙁

Absolutely sick editing, you got some serious effort there. As testing focus shifts you will have more or less hunting grounds as pirate, with the new cargo you probs can do that. Distortion damage will return, it may be strong, it may be back. I am suprised you had this much pushback in the rescues. :D Even them jumping off is hilarious as hell. Though its a bit of an abuse with the rescue beacons til the rep system comes in, with your reasonable fees I'd say you did great. I'd rather pay 50k and get revived than die! I think the reality is that piracy is not profitable. It maybe shouldnt be in the direct aUEC way vs players, rather it gives you rep with pirate factions for jobs and whatnot that do pay. And of course its fun! A adventure! Something aUEC/hr wont ever really make. You got the real pirate spirit man, considering your victims too! 10/10 pirate, would pirate with and/or pay ransom to.

This biggest problem I have with Piracy right now is, the game is so buggy, another player coming in an making it harder for you to finish a play session feeling rewarded for your time spent, is just salt on the wound. Like, the amount of things that have to go right for me to do just the one thing I enjoy (running bunker missions) is so easily toppled by a bug or pirate. However, piracy that gives you a choice to pay or lose... I mean, you're not a terrible pirate, and you made a great video. Still, I feel the game is hard enough to enjoy play as is right now. Thanks for the useful links to other channels and stuff. I do feel like everyone should research this stuff, to understand how it works from both ends.

This is a very fair point. Unfortunately, I don't like to churn out videos on a weekly basis - i prefer spending months crafting something I'm happy with so my upload schedule just doesn't exist. For me it's the making of the videos which I enjoy most so that's what I do as a hobby :D

More videos like this! Maybe you could go exploring different gameplay options and things to do that are player driven? Racing, Multi-crew ships with trained crews, Merchants that sell rare items to players from their ship, PMCs medic squads, MIL-SIM outfits. Theres a lot out there, and you don't need to wait for a developer to give it to you!

Great production quality, the pacing and the narration were all top notch! Got me invested the whole way through. Game Maker's Toolkit talked in a video about how players will often optimize the fun out of a game, and your path made me think of that in the opposite manner! Sure you didn't make optimal levels of money but man did it seem fun! Will come back for more, subscribed!

Loved this video. man did his research and his editing /camera work is nice too. Pirate Medic is top kek. After the 100% success rate I have had, as a pirate, at receiving death threats and people would rather alt f4 than pay me a measly 20K, this is last thing I expected to see a blue player do. Respect.

If what you called "piracy" consisted of more than taking a stupid single person ship that wasn't balanced properly with weapons that weren't balanced properly (distortion weapons were just stupid) and extorting, alone, all manner of trading ships with your OP BS in a game that doesn't yet have turret NPCs, then yeah, maybe people would appreciate it more. Because running into a pirate GANG that actually deployed various resources to run the scam would be impressive. There's nothing impressive about a lone mantis with OP weapons equipped. Its stupid. A person should not expect to be able to effectively pirate alone. It should take a combination of an interdiction ship, a combat superiority multi crew vessel and a cargo hauler to do piracy and the payout should not be some silly bank payment (because let's be real, your accounts would be shutdown quicksmart in the real world if you tried) but various goods and loot that you're then forced to try to hawk somewhere for "pirate cash", aka alternative currency that outlaws use because they can't run illicit transactions in UEC. See that would be impressive piracy - a proper multi ship and multi crew effort, that takes time and coordination and has vulnerabilities that can result in it being hunted down and broken up. What we have instead is jokers heading out solo in a stupid ship that somehow the entire UEE navy doesnt bother hunting down, using OP distortion weapons to disable ships they never should have had a chance of disabling in a fighter Or running typical solo player ambushes. This isn't piracy. Its thievery at best

I'm all for piracy as a gameplay loop and RP in a finished game. That being said I think griefing players especially newer players in a alpha version of a game who bought the game to check it out, that has a bad enough reputation as is will do more harm than good. I've had pirates try their shit on me. I just laugh and tell them go for it or will scuttle my ship if they try to or board. I lose nothing but time and am totally ok with that until it actually makes a difference in game.

While I understand piracy is part of the game...I still hate it. However, you made me see it from a different light. If it's done in a way that isn't simply "messing with someone because you can" to ruin their day it can actually be kinda fun for both parties. I'm one that if I'm hauling something with a large payout I will totally bring paid support. This is part of my gameplay. When you pirate "ethically" (LOL) it can actually be pretty damn interesting. The problem with piracy I think in SC is that for the most part people just want to grief and then say "hey, I'm a pirate"...that ruins it for everyone.

With cargo refactor and engineering ships won't just blow up like they do now, and Pirates will be better off for not killing players if they don't have to. Also more NPCs and meshing will mean encounters will decrease considerably because there will be significantly more prey
