@@Elvoalven i’m aware :) but i have a ton of friends in the UK that constantly talk about it as well, it’s not like just because it’s an american shop, other countries can’t know about it :)

Hot Topic is mostly a pop culture store now, but back in the early 2000s-2010s, it really was a great resource for anyone into alternative clothing and alternative band merchandise. It was basically the only place you could get anything goth/metal/punk back in the day if you lived outside of alternative hotspots in the US. It's not as relevant anymore with online shopping and all, but I appreciate what it did for alternative subcultures at the time. I remember when I got my first death metal shirt from there back in the day. I got it out of the bag to show my dad and all he said was "What the fuck is that?" Great memories.

@@Iluveyuu If I think about early 2000s Hot Topic compared to modern day Hot Topic, way more focus is put on pop culture items like tv show/movie/video game/funko pop merch, etc now. Back then it was mostly band shirts and alt clothing brands. They obviously still sell alt clothing and band merch, it's just that way more focus is put on pop culture. Someone I know worked there and they told me that the current management considers Hot Topic to be a pop culture store, while the old management considered it a music inspired alternative shop. The fact that they have so much pop culture stuff is probably what's keeping them in business so I can't blame them. Hot Topic has definitely changed, I've seen it discussed so many times. Have you never seen the "bring old hot topic back" memes lol.

@@Iluveyuu hot topic definitely has changed compared to the first few years it opened, no question. yes they still sell alt stuff but there never used to be so much TV show and movie stuff. the vibe is just different. pop culture is a big part of their brand now and nothing about that is alternative.

yeah EMP has been super hit and miss for me so i just avoid it now. i got some really good quality steel toe cap boots, but all the accessories (and one shirt) i got were very cheap in quality even though the price wasnt. like a chain i got was so flimsy i deformed it by sitting on it lol.

I've gotten lucky a couple of times where the stuff was decent quality, but it's always a gamble 🙈 I only buy backpacks and such from them nowadays, and only if it's on sale cause 1) there's always some kind of sale/coupon going on and 2)they seem to overprice their stuff to begin with 🥴

Could the Disney influx be because of the whole rockabilly-ish / pin-up styles that became popular in 2014/2015? Because I remember that a good chunk of those people were also a part of the “Disney adults” who dressed up as Disney characters in a pin up style. And that was also about the time that both Hot Topic and Torrid started to go hard with Disney-fying everything.

If you find any items that you like but them being really pricey, you can write up the brands and then check for the brands own online store. You can get away with it much cheaper, especially if buying several items :)

We always said it was for the alternateens, the ones who wanted to be edgy without leaving the mall😅 It's always been good for band tshirts, though, and sometimes you can find a hidden gem if you're lucky
