Here's everything you never knew about what you can find in a museum’s storage area. I got the keys to a natural history museum's storage facility. In this video I open 50 storage cabinets and share facts about the interesting animals I find including: butterflies, caterpillars, marine snails, shells, toucans, hummingbirds, whales, walruses, seals, coots, elephants, parrots, narwhals, squirrels, cows, and more.
This video answers all of the following questions:
- Where do museums store their specimens?
- How to preserve a caterpillar?
- Where do museums get animal specimens?
- Where do museums get their animals?
- How many specimens are in a museum?
- What does a museum look like behind the scenes?
- Do cyclops animals exist?
- Where do museums keep their animals?
Specimens used in this video are preserved at the Geier Collections and Research Center. Visit their public museum, the Museum of Natural History and Science, at the Cincinnati Museum Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Some of these are inexplicably funny. Cabinet 10 at 4:39 for example. Something about opening the doors up for it contain literally just a beaver, standing there, is hilarious to me

I love the small musical touches accompanying the narration. It really matches the feeling one gets from watching these videos. A little whimsical, but magical feeling of exploring a new and unknown world hidden from view.

Cyclopia is more common in domesticated animals because we breed so much of one thing. It's hard to find in the wild because they die immediately or soon after birth, they get eaten before we can get the specimen. Some can live with the condition but it is very very rare. It can also happen with humans (pls dont look this up if you're squeamish)

I work at a natural history museum, but it's always fascinating to see collections from other places. Very cool video!

How can I work at a natural history museum? I was always so fond of bones, shells, animals preserved in jars, skulls, and such.
I love how humans store knowledge in some way: either specimens, images in a hard drive, or simply encrypted data in writing. We are the only animal on this planet who does this. Amazing.
06:10 *"looks like a bunch of bones"* yep you got that right
Lmao this dude is so random. He says “there’s an elephants toe in that envelope, should I open it? Oh over here is an armadillo and a porcupine jaw” 😂❤
This is like Christmas unboxing videos for a zoologist (you’re living my dream job right now) and PLEASE go into much more detail about all these animal specimens because I would definitely watch them (you should open the elephant’s toe envelope too)
6:03 now I’m imagining them ordering a pizza every time they need room for more shells

I bet this museum also has some "do not open, the insects were prepped with toxic shit which u should not breathe in. We only found out later" - cabinets (Oddly specific? Yes. My university has some of those)
Never expected a narwhal to be that big. Always thought that the horn is just half of the one shown in the video. Really cool.

I know this comment is months old, but I just want to say that the protrusions on narwhals are not horns, but an elongated tooth.
I’m a museum worker and it’s always a treat to look through our education closet. I unexpectedly found not one but TWO tiger hides
I love ur videos I’ve always liked learning about animals i just found this channel about a month ago thank u for teaching me so much!
That dark beaver cabinet kinda got me 😅 I was like 😨...... 😱 for a second there lol. I live for these videos. So fascinating. And your voice and the piano keys are soothing to the ears.
This was a great video!!! More of these "exploring the storeroom" videos please!!!
What kind of educational background do you have? What exactly is it you do with these collections? It just looks like you really enjoy working with these specimen!
The piano tones and your intonation brough me back to my childhood, which was watching kids shows like Blue’s Clues. I love it!
4:16 The whale ear bone and the baleen were incredible. Great video, as usual. 🤓🤘🏽
This whole video reminds me of a really chill indie game lol thanks for the journey man
Love it mate! Amazing! Keep sharing all this interesting knowledge
I love that you have music behind all of your videos. Its so calming and makes watching these videos so much nicer

No words can explain how much i would like to be there studying every single speciment its awesome
I couldn't make out too many of the plants, but from what I could see it looks like the plant diorama includes models of Mayapple, Trillium, and Pink Lady's-slipper :)
This is so inexplicably lovely
I really enjoyed this video. It was really awesome looking at all the specimens. Definitely looking forward to more museum showcases!
Thank you for being in weird but true with your sister! You guys always got me exited for every episode even after rewatching them!
Man i wish i can go on there bc i love natures❤
This is my go-to channel for nature. I love the little piano trickles! So cute. Keep up the great work!
That taxidermy beaver would have scared the life out of me 😂😂
this video is sooo cozy for some reason... i adore your longer videos 💞💞💞 please make more of these
Cincy mentioned!!! 🥳The Cincinnati Museum Center is one of the coolest places in Cincy.
I was very much reminded of the late, great Mr. Fred Rogers when watching this. Your voice was similar to the calm tone of his, and the music was very reminiscent of what played when he visited somewhere or watched "Picture Picture" to show how something was made.
Charlie you're so wholesome, ur videos make my day💗
I loved the trays of various insects and the detail about the preservation of caterpillars. I can deeply appreciate how delicate a process that has to be, especially with caterpillars that have delicate spines and tubercles.
Dude this is so cool!! I wanna be able to walk around in museum storage closets and see what's in there. I'm going into biology as a major so maybe one day!
my goal in life is to have a job like yours! thank you for the amazing video!
8:49 I SEE A COELACANTH!!!!!!!
I want a whole cabinet filled with snail shells
I love my city!!! So hilarious that they used Larosas Pizza boxes to store shells 😂
2:56 tries to sneak one out. “Is that a walrus tusk in your pants or are you just happy to see me?”
Looooved this type of video!!!
6:02 ah yes, let me get my pizza shell box
3:08 no this is Patrick
You're so awesome! I love this channel!
If you ever get a chance I hope you're able to make it to the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. They have the largest known Alligator skull, and I'd love to see it on here!
This is so calming
I could easily be here for days, very fascinating!
Idk why but this gave me "Mr. Rogers" vibe. Just a chill dude teaching and showing with the lil piano key bits. Very calming
i get very excited when i correctly guess what they are. it makes me feel smart.
1:12 I like that shell
9:29 I might be wrong, but is that a taxidermy Coelacanth on the wall? If so that’s kinda awesome
@Entomofauna
4 ай бұрын
It's a coelacanth, but I highly doubt it's taxidermy, more likely a replica. Usually real coelacanths in museums are preserved in fluid.
"In cabinet 10 I found......... a beaver" Idk why but that had me CRYING laughing omg that's so funny idek why
please make another one of these videos, it’s the perfect amount of weirdness and interesting facts.
We don't have to go to a museum this one here is free Thanks to this guy
what i thought wouldve felt like a Smithsonian version of storage wars, was edited like a PBS special of "whats inside the museum storage?" its a distinctive piano/musical cueing style that just feels timeless, and i love it
Love this!
Actually, all birds have scleral rings! Super cool remnant from they dinosaur ancestors, like the theropods!
Oh, this is so wonderful.
With the music you use, I feel like I'm watching a random segment from Mr. Rogers. That's awesome. Keep it up!
Even if you didn’t mention Cincinnati, the La Rosas boxes would have given it away 😂
What fun! Thank you and your ring of keys!
8:54 I feel like I’m playing a video game
I adore this channel
I feel like I’m there with you looking at all of these cabinets
Those caterpillar ones are super impressive! Bug pinning is no joke
Between the soft gentle narration and light piano in the background, I got "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" vibes.

“In this box labeled turtles I found some bird nests.” I love the low key chaos of this cideo
That swordbill hummingbird is ridiculous. That's like, Sephiroth's Masamune levels of absurd length.
8:26 more on the elephant specimen searching "Cincinnati zoo chief the elephant" yields some info. Chief was a part of a circus where he crushed and killed his keeper, was taken to the Cincinnati zoo, where he lived for the next 10 years. His life then ended via firing squad and was served as elephant steak. His remains and stuffed skin was on display at the zoo, then donated to the University of Cincinnati and then to the Museum Center. Most of this info came from handeaux's tumblr post but I was able to cross reference it with an UCinci article and the elephant database, though I don't know where the steak information came from.
man watching this while high makes time go by fast
4:40 i got so scared i thought it was a figure hunched in the back
I love this channel ❤
And it's so cool that you Walk There
There's a clouded leopard in the last ten seconds of the video. Just in the background, full taxidermy. That's incredible.
The naming convention of that bird has me rolling 😆
1:01 that looks like the big shell I had but bigger than that
I didn’t know Narwhal tusks would be THAT long!!
I loved the musical direction for this video
8:59 i was hoping he would pet the kitty (

Neat. The Geier Collection is a valuable resource. ;) You should look around the Cincinnati Museum Center sometime.
This gives Mr Roger field trip vibes and I love it
In your next video, could you please explain how a cobra’s hood/cape works?
how you speak, the vocabulary u use, and the cute little sound effects all remind me of a kids show in this video

The editing and narration reminds me of Mr. rogers for some reason. Very calming.
0:11 I had a gaint shell but smaller than that shell you have though its found in the deep oceans
04:41 insert random excited rant from a Polish person about bobr (Polish for beaver)
I felt like smelling this archive all video long. 😂 That weird kind of museum vibe. Cool information in your vids but it definitely hits morbid curiosity and some awkward nasty feeling at the same time lol.
i just so happened to have gone to a national aviary today, so the cabinet of bird skulls was crazy cause i just saw most of those birds 12 hours ago
9:28 anybody else notice the coelacanth on the wall?
Can you do a morgue tour next?
