I realized something recently. Each of the main characters seem to have some sort of consistent and unique pattern to their suffering. Duck tends to suffer physically through visceral injuries like being beheaded or having his guts pulled out, Yellow Guy tends to suffer emotionally from the loss of his friends and situations that are complex and confusing for him, and Red Guy tends to suffer through a lack of meaning or fulfillment like in both of his boring jobs or his family not caring about him in their family photo. Not sure what implications this has for the shows overall theming and messaging, but I thought I'd share.

DHMIS really deserves a Season 2. It's too incredible for them to not expand upon it even further. I love Episode 3. Not only because it sends the message that a family can be three guys sharing a home, because of the hypocrisy of the twins, that just wanted to maintain their "perfect family" in order to satisfy their gluttony. It feels like that's the most common reaction to the original video, isn't it? Throughout the entire thing, there's just this unnerving sense that something isn't right, with scenes like the clown painting, and the lyrics of the song...But it's nothing too bad. Just some satire put to an insanely catchy song. And then just as you're disarmed enough...BOOM! OR-GAN CAKE!!!!
The web series was pure surrealist nightmare fuel. But the TV show is shockingly hilarious, I was not expecting to laugh out loud as much as I did. It didn't really feel as creepy and unsettling as the original show, it definitely had it's moments but more so it felt like it was trying to be a dark comedy. I mean the first episode ends with Duck getting his eyeball destroyed by a coin with some of the most perfect comedic timing I have ever seen, that pretty much summarizes the tone of the show right there.

Some theories I've seen around explain the shift as a change in leading villains. The original series was orchestrated by Roy, who was actively working to torture his son, thus the teachers are maniacal and cruel. The new show, on the other hand, is run by Lesley, a more heartwarming yet still twisted soul, so even if everything is a less tense now, the nightmare is still real.

My friend worked for adult swim when it was pitched and he said that while he and his crew liked it, most of the higher ups didn't get the absurd slow-paced writing style, in combination with it being a bit too timely for a high effort puppet show. I had a similar train of thought, but more so with each character representing different generations. To me, Duck is honestly a boomer. He's arrogant, close-minded, the loudest person in the room, and he was like the only one who originally wanted to work which kind of fits the boomer stereotype of them thinking that hard work=rewards. Red guy gives of millennial vibes to me, since he's very indifferent to things and often butts heads with Duck over their ideals, plus he's always striving for some kind of purpose. Yellow guy is therefore gen z. Dude's already super traumatized but still maintains a happy exterior, and it was revealed in the episode with Leslie that he, like Red guy, tries to think outside the box. Plus despite being the dumbest of the group, he seems to be the most self-aware.

As a fan of the original shorts, I love the new show even more. I was surprised by how good it was, as well as how funny and how much more fleshed out the personalities of the 3 main guys are. You really get a sense they are more active, and making decisions in the world around them, whereas in the original shorts they were closer to being passive victims as stuff just seemed to happen to them. But in the new show, it feels like the 3 main guys have arguably just as much chaotic energy as the world they inhabit. Duck is my favorite character as well, his arrogance is hilarious. Also his “What about my shreeeeedder” moment gave me the biggest laugh I’ve had in a while. A lot of love was put in the new show, it’s so obvious in the writing, songs, and overall direction, and it really re-awakened the enthusiasm I’ve had for the series as someone who enjoyed the original shorts when they came out.

I think the most impressive thing is how the show still feels the same, despite almost completely changing genres. The web series was basically a horror musical, where almost all of each episode was a song, to a surreal comedy with horror elements. The original did have jokes here and there but they were very brief and typically foreshadowed the horror but the TV series is mostly jokes yet they still help build up the new slow burn effect to the horror.

You should check out Salad Fingers too. It's one of the old, OLD Flash horror series from the golden age of Newgrounds and is still being made to this day to my knowledge. Definitely one of my favorites! I have some merch, super high quality stuff. It’s nice to see the content evolve from being a silly flash animation to a sort of rhythm in episodes, and having it’s own brand. There’s no real story overall, rather nonsensical plots in each episode that sometimes link together. But one thing i love is how it’s still technically a one-man show. Only one time has another voice actor showed up. There’s still a team of sorts, but there’s still one dude behind it all mainly.
I absolutely love Dont hug me im scared, happy they went through with the show and the mini series was just a classic can’t wait to see more from them

Woohoo finally. Love Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. Glad you're finally covering it
Finally, another Duck lover!! In all seriousness though, I grew up watching DHMIS and I’m so glad it’s back in the spotlight with the new series. Can’t wait for season 2!

I'm so happy to see this series getting more attention. It was pretty much my intro to apologies horror years ago and I was obsessed with the analysis videos people were doing.
I have always loved this show. From the first video they’ve made to the show now- I’m so happy with this
Holy crap, I'd actually consider getting a TV just to watch this - i had NO IDEA it was on Channel 4 now?? What???

love that you're covering this! I've been so hyped since the new series came out and couldn't wait for you to cover this. the new series especially ramps it up with the existential horror, which I love. P.S. I fucking hate KZreads new layout. it's genuinely disgusting
Comedy was always part of the series but I'm kind of impressed just how much humor is packed into the shows especially without them feeling disconnected from the original series.
As someone who loves horror and comedy, I have to say "Woah! This hits pretty close to home for me." It's been seen as a critique on the problems of education similar to Baldi's Basics. Every episode of the webshow has one of the characters confused and the Teachers not listening to questions. There's no dialogue between Teacher and Student. It's probably most evident when the duck shows understanding of the Theory of Relativity and the Clock ruptures their (and by extension our) eardrums in response. It's... scarily relatable.
I like how you put probably the least threatening character in the thumbnail
that part about an acquired taste too is so true i know most of my friends wouldn't enjoy something like this lol this show has such a camp way of being an adult show that i HAVE to see more. i also love the direction they went, focusing more on comedy cuz i think a lot of people were expecting storyline right from the bat, and not an sitcom type of series (who knows if there's next season there could be a focus on more storyline) but i would've loved it either way. and there was a cancelled pilot ep too and apparently the creators hated it cuz it didn't fit what the show was really about ( still would've loved to see it tho just out of curiosity)
I was 15 when the first KZread episode came out... I'm 26 now. As a fan since the start, it has been a trip. Episode 2 didn't come out until 2014 practically out of nowhere, becoming 6 episodes by the summer of 2016. Silence... until 2018, where a pilot was teased to air by Conaco, Conan O'Brien's production studio. That pilot depicted something truly ominous, and many fans were excited... then nothing came from it. 4 years later, we get another teaser: September 12th, 2022, with nothing from the Conaco pilot. A fresh start, and return to form. An additional 6 episodes, double the series total. It's been a long 11 years, but it's been a very... surreal ride.
I remember the first time seeing an episode. A friend told me to sit down and just watch. Okay, well KZread had some odd stuff and was wondering what the hell I was watching and … oh wow that escalated quickly! At first, that’s what it’s like. You get a system shock. So you watch it again just to say “no, that is what I saw” but then you watch it again, and again. You start noticing things. Seeing details you missed the last time. It’s so simple but so involved. You can really tell there is a message here and not just shock value I … I want to see this show … but you know, I’m scared! 😱 but I’m going to soon. Cause I want to see more or this creativity!

We had a death in the family at the atart of this year and i sent the death episode to my sib who hadn't seen any dhmis. We both really resonated with the whole thing because it's meaningful and nothing's truly a throwaway shot/line. After their first watch, they told me it was something they couldn't look away from. But now they have dhmis music stuck in their head from rewatching episodes and my mom even recognized that i was dinging the creative song from the web series. If it helps, the horror is toned down. The episodes are around 20 mins long and they can't have horror the whole time so much more of the episode is commentary. But every frame has new things you can find even on a third or fourth watch still.
I was a newbie to this series but holy crap is it good.
Been waiting for you to cover this one!
Honestly you just gave the descriptors of the characters which just so happen to be their names. So kudos!
Awesome, happy to see this get a review!
YAAAAAY YOU SAW IT!!!! I'm actually developing an unhealthy obsession for this series, I personally think it's even better than the webisodes and that the format translated exquisitely to TV omg I can't even believe it IT'S SO GOOD! GOD!
i remember watching the youtube series as a kid and just kept waiting for the new episodes from episode one. And now to be able to watch the tv series as an adult is just a hit a nostalgia.
It’s so nice when something you’ve been waiting years for turns out even better than you could’ve Imagined!
0:44- Nice to see Saberspark learned about the joys of creativity. And how it is best to never be creative again. A valuable life lesson from the original don’t hug me, I’m scared.
The room reference. Love it Also I’m glad you enjoyed it! From the drunk reacts I wasn’t sure if you would like it. Interested to see your thoughts on the web series and the lore
Those are the fandom names. Canonically, we don't know their real names but Yellow's name has a hyphen in it and his maiden name is mentioned in the worm episode, and Duck's name is not David
I enjoyed watching the stream with you. Your reactions were gold. Keep up the great content Saber
i love this series so much, i remember being young and watching the original and falling in love. now when i heard about the TV series i got so excited and i started watching is asap. this series has never disappointed me it makes me laugh makes me think and the community is so amazing i love all of my DHMIS friends ive made.
I like how there’s so much to dig through for the satire to work on historical levels
The humor, songs, and commentary keep us entertained, but it's the low-key continuity and world building that keep us craving more.
this series has left a hole in my brain where if the conditions are met, i fall apart laughing. 1, the phrase: "Pesky Bee!" is said and 2: object is smacked
Yes, I'm so glad that you've reviewed DHMIS!! I watched the web series for the first time this year as well, glad I'm not the only one. Both the web series and the TV show are just incredible works of art!
Just wait till Pibby steals the crown, once she officially released.
His reaction to the first episode was awesome. You could just hear the moment his innocence shattered.
I LOVE “Dont hug me im scared.” Why? Dude, the Character designs are unique in their own way!
Oh my god, I’m so glad you finally watched this show!! I really love it and I was actually thinking of how you’d respond to it earlier today
I was really impressed with the TV series! They’re all such a creative bunch and I hope it gets a S2! Also the original pilot for the TV series is kinda lost media, and there’s no plans to release it. I hope it comes out since the leaked songs are incredible!
I was also a bit late to it, but I believe I first watched it back in 2018 or so. I had heard of it, but it didn't look like my sort of thing, so I passed. I was so wrong. I'm really into this kind of dark and surreal content that tends to have a hidden meaning behind all the chaos. It's like those shorts on Adult Swim by Alan Resnick. Unedited Footage of a Bear and This House Has People in It. So when I watched the DHMIS episodes on KZread, I loved them. I also loved how people tried to make sense of it all, since it had somewhat of a continuing narrative going on seemingly behind the scenes. I saw the new episodes were finally up, but unfortunately they're still restricted to the UK only. You can get around it with a VPN, but I feel like you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to see this thing created and loved by everyone on KZread. I understand they should get paid for their work, but they should at least make it available to everyone in doing so. Either way, it's all great stuff and I still love it.
YAAAYYY! You finally watched Don't Hug Me I'm Scared! This is such a great series and I can't wait to see more of it!
5 year old me watching it: Laughing 9 year old me watching it: Laughing 11 year old me now: *scared cuz I understand the context of it now*
I was seriously excited when i found out that they finished the first season of DHMIS, I loved every episode and rewatched each of them to get the back ground details and the secrets hidden in each episode.
I'm currently about 9 minutes into the stream vod for him watching don't hug me. And god I need a playlist of what he had autoplaying just so i can go through them all and maybe understand what in the hell I was watching
The bit with Unemployed Brendon with his fanfiction book was the icing on the cake for his character
