I Nearly DESTROYED My THAI WIFE’S Family Home (and neighbour’s house). THAILAND Expat Life 2024.

Well, a bad week for me. I nearly destroyed my Thai wife's family home and also nearly ended up in the neighbours living room. I'm actually asking the mechanics out there or those with car knowledge what actually happened. A car in gear with no accelerator pedal down shouldn't keep running backwards and through a wall. Anyway, I go to my local mechanic to try and fix up the damage on my car and go over the other things that have made this week a pretty bad week for me in the first month of 2024.

Reverse is lower gear ratio than first. Giving the engine enough ratio not to stall. My dad always told me, you really wanna pull something use reverse, most power to distance.

NOT a good idea to start the car from the outside, unless you know for sure it is in neutral and the handbrake is applied. The jolting was caused by the engine-management system trying to stabilise the revs under the heavy load of the lowest gear in the gearbox. If you can afford, trade it in for a new, or nearly-new vehicle. You are there for the long haul and anything could break at speed in a 20-year-old banger. Old tyres are especially vulnerable to failure in the tropics.

The magic 'cream' is called rubbing compound (Solvol Autosol is a top brand), which abrades minor scratches in the paint. Thai is: 'Yah cut see': medicine/chemical - abrade/polish - paint/colour. For deeper work, they would use hard-setting filler paste and 'wet and dry' (waterproof) abrasive papers of various roughness, with or without water as a lubricant. Such papers are grey/black, while sandpaper (for wood) is yellowish.

Be happy no one was seriously injured! Look on the bright side, now that truck bed is no longer pristine, you can actually use the bed for hauling junk without worry of damage. Long term you probably should consider replacing 20-year-old, 400K truck with a hybrid (saves fuel/lowers operating cost) automatic transmission van or SUV. As BYD is popular there, maybe that's a safer alternative than the old truck. New motor vehicles often include advanced safety features like radar cruise control and lane-keeping assist, which makes driving a little easier and safer. Good luck and thanks for the content!

Have had a similar bout of car bad luck recently. 1. Hit an unfinished kerb corner turning left, ripped the tyre. 2. Shortly after, another tyre got a nail in it. Jacked the car up and it fell off the jack. Fortunately the wheel was still on but the tyre was flat so very lucky not to smash the alloy wheel. New tyre required as almost worn out. Jack was bent so new jack will be 3.5k baht! 3. Shortly after that, picked up a nail in another new tyre in a builders merchants yard..... less than 5 days old that tyre. Been trouble free now for 6 weeks!

I never start my car, especially a standard transmission, without being in the vehicle. As for your other accident, I never park in a parking lot where someone can easily back into the side of my car. So I choose my parking space accordingly.

Bugger! We all have those types of weeks (hopefully infrequently). For me its always when lacking sleep and a bit stressed (even if not 100% aware I'm stressed). The jumping def occurs in older cars when just turning ignition and in reverse (even 1st gear in some small cars with really low ratio gearing and fuel in cylinders). Your Toyota is in great shape for age and living in a rural/wild west driving environment. Car years are like dog years, its equal to about 60 in human years. The damage is purely cosmetic if you aren't thinking about botox/plastic surgery the car/ute won't be concerned about gracefully aging either (no body image issues). You are right that the older Toyotas are sought after and known for being bullet proof in most ways (old UK Top show, showed how indestructible many years ago). Looking forward to the next, hopefully uneventful (in a bad way) episode. Keep up the vlogs and sharing James. appreciated 🙏🙏👍👍

I bet the torque in that old large diesel engine allowed it to keep firing even at no speed. Reverse ratios are different to 1st gear I believe, which may again allow it to do this. Also the lack of engine management electronics/software that in a modern car will probably turn the engine off to save potential damage Try moving off in 1st gear without any accelerator and see if it will do it. That will show you how strong the torque is.

Oh boy Its a diesel, they are a high torque low revving engine. Once started they don't stall too easily In fact they teach you to do something similiar in 4WD training courses If you are going up a steep embankment and stall or stop and want to reverse back down safely you do the following: Handbrake on, put the car in reverse gear, release the handbrake so that the gearbox grabs ( car still stationery), then with the clutch out, and car in reverse gear, turn the key to crank the engine, and when if starts let it idle in reverse down the hill. It will crawl down backwards safely without you using the brakes and risking locking up the wheels & sliding down in an uncontrolled manner. So your diesel pickup works as designed which is amazing for 400k kms - unfortunately it was pilot error old chum !

Hi bud. Yep, that’s normal. The truck was kangarooing in reverse. Reverse is the lowest ratio in the gearbox so although you might see sometimes they do it going forward a bit before stalling when in reverse the gearing favours the engine more so it can happen, if it stalls the momentum kinda bump starts it again so it just goes on and on. Nothing wrong with the truck. Glad your ok, best from Yisa and I.

A girlfriend lent into door of her car to start and leave to warm up.. her car was in 1st, drove forward, open door hit car parked in front.. she dropped then the car ran over her and broke her hip.. then carried on, across road and into garages.. easily done.. months to repair ..
