In this video, we assess whether replacing a PS5's HDMI port at home is feasible and whether it's worth all the hassle. What could go wrong...?
** Please note that some of the points made in this video are for dramatic effect such as " millions die due to HDMI failure, and millions more die of heart attacks when they ask repair shops how much they charge to fix the issue". The real number is likely in the thousands. **

@@Lordhitchy Micro Soldering is actually pretty easy if you have good hand skills just buying the right components would do the job IDK about others but I've been soldering for the past 9 years and I still mess things up but when things work it'll be a game changer because you'll be able to buy car ECU's and fix em for a good profit especially german cars.
As someone who's been doing soldering and micros soldering for over 10 years you did a really good job, that retrace looked amazing. And I'm sure you're ready for the more stuff!

I charge 105 bucks for these. It takes some time to master them. But once you do enough of them you'll be able to disassemble them replace that HDMI port and reassemble them in no time. Takes me a little bit under an hour to do each one.

@PhoneRepairGuru Check those components around HDMI with a multimeter (or other means), the cap at 7:27 looked weird imo.
I've replaced a fair bit of HDMI and other connectors from several devices. If I can give you some tips: use aluminium or kapton tape to cover the surrounding components if you are new to the game. This will effectively shield the other components or close connectors from overheating and help you direct the heat towards the faulty component. Low melt solder is not needed really, just have good (lead) solder and add this. Don't overheat your components so you don't damage plastics, but use sufficiant heat to get the solder melding without spending too much time doing it. Take some other broken boards to practice desoldering, you will be amazed how fast you will master this. You have all the right gear to do so, just put in some hours of practice.
You’re getting better and better with your work. I’m pretty sure that in future you’ll be able to swap microchips on phones motherboards! Good luck PRG, I’m your huge fan!

Love your sense of humor throughout! Keep them coming!
Love the long form videos, keep it up 👍
Very enlightening video, despite the failure. Certainly worthed the time / money spent.
Multimeter is your best briend, probably the HDMI IC Chip got shorted also, or the filters are blow up. Maybe a small soldering iron like a C210 or T30 would make it easy also. But for a beginner job that was pretty clean, everyone starts like that, spending over 10 hours on one device that didnt even got fixed, but the experience comes quickly.
@PhoneRepairGuru

Thanks! I used the multimeter to check the hdmi encoder but there was no evidence it was shorted.I replaced it anyway but still the same issue. Hopefully in the future I'll know from experience what the issue is

Hey, just check diode values, fix it and HDMI will work again! And be more relaxed during soldering. But great job! Nice to see next guy who makes this kind of repairs :)
I love the microsoldering videos. Definitely would love to see more!
I'm going to make my friends ps5 this weekend he says that the port is completely trasjed so he is sure it's the port but this will be my first time doing this repair. I work alot with the soldering iron and hot air but never a hdmi port so I'm very excited!
Would it have been better to tin the hdmi port; tin the pads and solder the hdmi port? Then you could go on with the trace repair and mask if ater you have made a secure connection. (I remember when I asked you about how to learn microsoldering, I've been doing it for 6 months now, thanks !)
Thumbnail (the one containing “Broken HDMI”) scared me a little because I once did a small fix on my ps5’s hdmi when it ended up being a bit looser than it should have been. Also i did happen to notice Plainrock at the start of the video 😂
Micro soldering scares me. I did a bunch of practice on dual shock 4 controllers by replacing the analog stick that had drift and that hate me tense. In the end I could never really get the drift to go away.
@GB-oj2gt
5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately all non-magnetic sticks get drift within a thousand hours or so. If you game a lot, they're basically disposable. Also, aftermarket sticks are all trash. I've bought dozens that came, sealed, with drift. Try to use OEM parts where possible, or similar parts through vendors like ifixit.
2:50 "Now we can move the body aside"💀💀💀💀💀💀
I did it bro 😊 i took one all apart , in bent the broken on back in place in soldered it togther carefully in it worked 😊
@PhoneRepairGuru use some Kapton tape around the HDMI port to prevent knocking components off the board!
You channel makes me want to work at a shop like this :D
One of the best phone repairer i have come across with😂❤❤❤❤
I just managed to repair one of these HDMI ports the other day, it was my first successful soldering job! The plastic part of the HDMI had been pushed in, and the pins had been cleanly sheared off. Luckily it had no ripped pads. I have a hot air gun and soldering pen (that i can't put tin on, it just won't stick to the tip). And the repair went pretty well. I also had to resolder the little capacitor next to the port, it's so close and it's tiny. I don't have a microscope, so this is pretty much the limit in terms of scale, any smaller and it gets hard to see what I'm doing.

4:30 Massive ground plane in the PCB: "Nice soldering iron you have there. Would be a shame if someone wicked all it's heat away."
To make it easier, you can get solder pads, that can solder on one side and use UV mask on the other, so that it is fixed in place and it is mostly like factory pad :)

Not into repairs that much but your videos are just amazing.
I just finished one of these today for a customer. He had 4 ripped pads and a very mangled port. I got it up and running first try and was happy with the repair. It ran for 6 hours without a glitch. As soon as he got it home. Screen flickering. Needless to say I'm getting it back tomorrow. These playstations HDMI ports are extremely delicate and hard to do even if you have done hundreds like me.
Hey PRG, Didn't you say that your gonna upload a video of the Vision pro parts replacing? When will it get uploaded :) ?

Cool that you showed a video not being able to finish a job...alot of techs make this seem easier than it really is..cheers brother
well done. what is your miroscope?? and are you using lenz??
A single ripped pad is "bad" for this guy. Man, its fantastic! Never seen such a meesed up port with ONLY ONE bad pad!!
I can understand that pain. I converted my redmi airdots from micro usb to type c after 5 hours and I forgot them on airport while travelling 😭
Hey I’m out here revealing trade secrets but we always replace the hdmi ic with the port itself 😉
I don’t know if it’s still the case, but with the iPhone XS Max I had my Lightning Port serialized so Apple CarPlay simply would not work after swapping my board to a donor phone.
Im an EE and i wont even do this haha great video for trying man. Hdmi are high speed ports so the pads and its surrounding components matters a lot, am surprised its the most common issue our beloved ps5 has.
Micro soldering is a great technical skill
The HDMI IC (The Panasonic one) could be faulty too
See if you can make the necessary repairs to the donor board and if swap it
You did a good job, not sure why it didn't work.
i do 15 to 20 of these a week and for someone who has not done this before you did great

You can if you know what your doing and have a hot air station but if you dont know what you are doing and are trying to do it to with a soldering iron youll have a bad time .. hot air is the only way to do a hdmi port or even analog stick swaps on the controllers
My PS has a similar problem out of the box but they're saying it can't be repaired and refusing to replace it
@PhoneRepairGuru I've replaced probably close to 100 of these (near Toronto). There is definitely a better method to doing this but you didn't do too bad.
Bro's dedication is next level 🤯
My ps5 is my baby! Had it 2 years now and still looks like new. I really do need an ssd already.
if a ground pad is ripped off the HDMI cable could just be replaced and the output stuck on 1080P resolution as theirs tons of ground on HDMI
The title is personal
You need to replace all filters and the transmitter (the blach chip near hdmi port) because the previous solder job shorted the solder lines. Your repaired trace also looks very bad. You need to use proper trace repair pads instead of 0.01mm wire
PRG: if I can repair this then maybe you can too. Me: I really don't think so
Hey @PhoneRepairGuru I have question do you remember the techrax video with the 6s? That your comment send it over ? What about it?
"They went all out with the cooling" is that why I see a lot of them get returned either for HDMI issues or because of overheating.
You should've coiled more wire to the missing spot then apply UV glue all over it then scratch the soldering joint and better use the hot air gun with the solder paste.
0:25 as someone who has soldering skills I can confirm this is how you hold it if you want to get 3rd degree burns.
Should send it to Alpha repairs in Ontario. Will make it like new ✨️
Hey man, which battery brand would you recommend for replacement for 12 Mini?
did you check if the light goes to white light if not then you have a probleme else where (southbridge or hdmi chip .....) try also resoldering each and every pin with the soldering iron and check for continuaty whit multimeter for each pin
you should solder pins
your repairs are really interesting, I will like to ask if u could suggest me some solutions to fix my ps3
Change the Panasonic ic chip that does the HDMI output.
I thought you said the vision pro video was next my guy
yooo he featured plainrock’s ps5 destruction, +rep!
Did you ever figure out what was fully wrong with it? This stuff is intriguing.
PhoneRepairGru my Dad is in the military for the Army for communications so fixing radios and he’s going to fix my ps5 hdmi port and I’m fed up with this ps5 and he’s going to fix it over the summer I can’t wait to get myn repaired correctly and by someone that actually has to fix on like mother boards
PLAINROCK124 MENTIONED 🗣🗣💯💯‼‼🔥🔥
You don't need to buy a donor board like him because the filter chip can find on old pixel, lg 📱, Samsung. And the capacitor can be find on an iPhone 6, or just make a extend that with jumper wire if you know how it work because it's everywhere .🙂
looks like the hdmi encoder chip could be the next possible issue
If you can spare the cash, I'd really recommend an iron made for micro/pico soldering. An active Weller pen with replaceable 0.2 or 0.1mm tips will go a LONG way.
u should watch north ridge fix to have tips on how to micro solder
You should use heat tape to protect those components from the heat gun while you're fixing the HDMI port
I think this calls for a @Tronicsfix collab! Please make a collab to see if he can fix it
