I MESSED UP.... PS5 HDMI Replacement.

Ғылым және технология

Thank you Paperlike for sponsoring this video: paperlike.com/phonerepairguru
In this video, we assess whether replacing a PS5's HDMI port at home is feasible and whether it's worth all the hassle. What could go wrong...?
** Please note that some of the points made in this video are for dramatic effect such as " millions die due to HDMI failure, and millions more die of heart attacks when they ask repair shops how much they charge to fix the issue". The real number is likely in the thousands. **

I've replaced a fair bit of HDMI and other connectors from several devices. If I can give you some tips: use aluminium or kapton tape to cover the surrounding components if you are new to the game. This will effectively shield the other components or close connectors from overheating and help you direct the heat towards the faulty component. Low melt solder is not needed really, just have good (lead) solder and add this. Don't overheat your components so you don't damage plastics, but use sufficiant heat to get the solder melding without spending too much time doing it. Take some other broken boards to practice desoldering, you will be amazed how fast you will master this. You have all the right gear to do so, just put in some hours of practice.

Multimeter is your best briend, probably the HDMI IC Chip got shorted also, or the filters are blow up. Maybe a small soldering iron like a C210 or T30 would make it easy also. But for a beginner job that was pretty clean, everyone starts like that, spending over 10 hours on one device that didnt even got fixed, but the experience comes quickly.

  • @GB-oj2gt

Unfortunately all non-magnetic sticks get drift within a thousand hours or so. If you game a lot, they're basically disposable. Also, aftermarket sticks are all trash. I've bought dozens that came, sealed, with drift. Try to use OEM parts where possible, or similar parts through vendors like ifixit.

I just managed to repair one of these HDMI ports the other day, it was my first successful soldering job! The plastic part of the HDMI had been pushed in, and the pins had been cleanly sheared off. Luckily it had no ripped pads. I have a hot air gun and soldering pen (that i can't put tin on, it just won't stick to the tip). And the repair went pretty well. I also had to resolder the little capacitor next to the port, it's so close and it's tiny. I don't have a microscope, so this is pretty much the limit in terms of scale, any smaller and it gets hard to see what I'm doing.

It ran for 6 hours without a glitch. As soon as he got it home. Screen flickering. Needless to say I'm getting it back tomorrow. These playstations HDMI ports are extremely delicate and hard to do even if you have done hundreds like me.

If you can spare the cash, I'd really recommend an iron made for micro/pico soldering. An active Weller pen with replaceable 0.2 or 0.1mm tips will go a LONG way.

You should use heat tape to protect those components from the heat gun while you're fixing the HDMI port
