I Memorized the Dictionary to Learn Spanish. The Results Shocked Me.

Bored of quarantine, I decided to spend the week memorizing the dictionary to learn Spanish. I’ve done lots of language challenges and learned many things in my life, including learning Chinese, but this was one of the most difficult challenges I’ve ever undertaken.
It’s a little different from my typical “White Guy Speaks Chinese” videos but the results of this experiment genuinely shocked and amazed me and I’m so glad I decided to do it!
Regarding the app I use to memorize, it’s called Anki, a free and open source cross-platform app that’s the most efficient way to memorize huge amounts of vocabulary in different languages. It's based on a system called spaced repetition. You can read more about it and download it here: apps.ankiweb.net/index.html
The dictionary I bought is called the Spanish Frequency Dictionary - Essential Vocabulary. You can buy it from mostusedwords.com. However, I found a shared Anki you can download that has the 2500 most common words already loaded up, with audio and visuals - you can check that out here: ankiweb.net/shared/info/24142...

The best thing about Spanish is that 90% of the words are read as written

Hablé con Jim is basically "Yo hablé con Jim" . They left out the pronoun Yo because the verb gives it away. The more you omit pronouns the more natural you will sound. Trust me.

Memorizing vocabulary is an underrated and incredibly effective tool. Saved me tons of time and effort when I was learning Spanish too. That doesn't mean you can just neglect to practice conversing in it, but it is definitely a huge boost.

Something common in Spanish is that pronouns are not mentioned in a same sentence all the time. Like, in English if we were talking about a girl we'd be saying "she" "she" a bunch of times. In Spanish the verb conjugation gives it away so we don't repeat "she" once is already mentioned.
