@@davon3384 because this is the point of meditation to ultimately become more aware of yourself and others, to get rid off all the problems you have in your life and tackle them one by one until you have nothing else to conquer and you are somewhat happy with where you are at and even can say that to death. You are supposed to feel emotions but realistically speaking they just don't really make you do things you don't want to, you don't submit to them anymore. This is all what meditation will do to you, the OP of this post just doesn't understand that they feeling this way is actually part of the process and is completely fine to stumble upon, gah, even better to finally land here. @@davon3384 i was at this point which OP was talking about and felt really good, what was worrying me was that i didn't feel negative emotions I feel I judged them and ignored them, so you are 100% right that you should accept all thoughts and feelings unconditionally. I think you need to be conscious of what you are doing. Regarding your first question and your answer I do not find your answer satisfying. Most of the techniques in meditation aim to make you more aware of your nuances. Regarding the 100s of techniques... it is up to the individual to decide on what tradition and what practice to choose from, example is someone with ADHD wont be able to do many practices like someone without ADHD. I had no idea what i was doing to reach that point also, so I wouldn't worry about this. I still think that you might have got what Dr K. wanted to say when he said that "it starts working" but let me rephrase myself. Simply it was the goal of pretty much every meditation tradition to make you more aware and strengthen your frontal lobe so all the urges are less powerful and you can control your body. If you feel like talking with me here is my discord burner account: "machehasie" drop me a friend request and I'll be happy to answer your questions. I've had very similar thoughts about this topic before, but not necessarily meditation related. I just get these thoughts out of nowhere, like sometimes i'll be thinking about how i can improve at this game i like but part of my brain just says "this game doesnt really make me any happier, it doesn't mean anything" To which i kind of get scared because if all of the things i enjoy are meaningless what is the point of life? Its kind of the similar question being asked but from different circumstances, probably because i have different problems from the guy in the post. I've always kind of thought that life is about part struggle and part joy, but it can really be whatever you want. Hopefully this made some sense.

Great if it helps you having a better life experience, but id like to add something. Life is not a game, what you are doing is again believing in something to make life easier for you, you could also choose to believe that god helps you climb and not fall, and itll do the same trick if not even better (because god is all mighty you know). Yes life is a place that is similar to a Simulation or a game, but if you dont come to that conclusion because there is simply No other option to picture life, then its a belief. What we are doing here is still laying filters above reality (beliefs) because we cannot bear to just accept now, with the feeling of fear, doubts, pain, and insecuritys, without trying to change them. These things are present but we need coping mechanisms because of our incapability of just living in the present and ego free, ego is afraid of falling, consciousness isnt. You can find out every moment in which youre acting out of ego, by simply recognizing if the suffering that is present is happening to a somebody. Is the pain just feelable in the now, the present, or is it also feelable in your mind and imagination? Hope this helped you, sorry if i just threw this in without anybody asking but i felt like this is a great addition to what you explained

"The goal doesnt matter" is a phrase that gymgoers, athletes and people with passions will deeply understand, and is moreso true for mediation. Can you have a goal? Yes, loosing fat, gaining muscle, learning certain songs on the guitar or whichever instrument, or whatever goal is ok to have, but they wont bring happyness. This is one of the things that I know are hard to explain to people who have not found that "joy" that DrK describes that comes from meditation, but I just wanted to comment to let people know that yes, this is something that happens and that you'll get there. So yeah, go get the tatoo. You're not bound by the ego but engaging with it is not "sin", its life. So live while you can.

  • @lukebrindax7465

I disagree. Athletes and "those with a passion, gymgoers, etc all have a goal. Do people think that Athletes just train because they like training? No, they want to be the best, which is why many of them are on enhancement drugs in order to be the best. When I was an athlete, my goal was to improve every single day, not just "Enjoyment, " even though I enjoyed my sport and I had lots of fun... However, if I never improved..... or worse, even got worse over time.... Would it still be fun? Those who go to the Gym do so to work out and get stronger, improve themselves, and get healthier, etc. If you were working out, and ended up becoming weaker, and losing muscle... Would you still work out? Would you still want to work out if you didn't advance? "Enjoyment" is nice, and you want to enjoy what you do, but joy by itself only brings stagnation, whereas a goal allows you to improve. There are also many times the "Joy" wears off with the stagnation. You also mention Musicians, and while they play for enjoyment, they also play in order to get better and create music. The JOY comes from accomplishment, success, and hard work that comes from it. What kind of Musician just wants to play Cords their entire lives? They go out trying to experiment, trying to create and that births joy and happiness. All of the musicians wanted to create music, so that people could listen. Many of them made money off of it too. For example, One of my passions is to become a farmer and become self-sufficient. The fruits of my labor when I get Milk, Eggs, Fruits, Produce, etc will brings me joy and great joy, because with all of my hard work, comes accomplishment. Do you think I would want to be a farmer and plant tons of plants, have animals, etc, if there is no benefit from it? Yes I want a large dog pack that wont provide food, but they will still have a purpose. Another passion of mine is software. I've been a developer for over a decade, and do you think I just code to just code, or do you believe there is a reason I write code? I want to create things, I want to build things, I want my thoughts to become reality. Just learning to code constantly, and just reading and not putting it into practice isn't going to make anyone happy. There is always a goal.

@@lukebrindax7465 it's amazing how you'll see someone who does the same things as you, but have a very different perspective on things. I may not be an athlete, but I'm a regular gymgoer. I competed on table tennis only on school level when I'm still studying, but I never won and competed against athletes from other schools. I know very well that I didn't stand a chance, but did it just out of pure enjoyment. I was completely captivated by computer programming since high school and became known as "the computer guy". My curiosity and thirst for knowledge drove me to take a deep dive to whatever I can learn about coding until I eventually became a software engineer. Currently I kinda have a love-hate relationship with coding mostly because I'm forced to code in a way I don't like by my company. But I'm also working on a side project that may become my full time work. If all goes well, there'll come a time when I can have a full control on the direction of tech I'm working on. I tried going to gym just because a friend asked me and I just said "sure", but I found that working out is something I truly enjoy doing. The gains are all good, but working out itself became the reward by now that I customized my program so I could go to the gym 6 times a week. And I figured that if I like going to gym anyway, why not set a goal? So now I decided to pursue calisthenics and currently working on my handstand and front lever. You're right that there's always a goal, but for some people, they're not the end all and be all. I think I belong to that category. Once you find something you like doing, it becomes like a hammer that looks for a nail. It's not that you set out to a journey because you have a goal, but you set a goal so that you can have a journey. At least that's what it's like to me.

Regular gyms are filled with these types of people, which is why I work out at home. "that just seems like a very conceited, incel-ish thing to say." With such an angry, aggressive post using insults... Are you sure you're not the one who's "Projecting" now? Maybe you shouldn't use buzzwords that you don't understand. As a mathematician, what you said about logic being fake is so true. Even if we just consider mathematics and not even bother considering physics, in mathematics we have these axioms that are based on human ideas of how logic should apply in a mathematical universe. We have axioms that say how you can construct the objects that we study. But the moment you swap some of those axioms out, you can sometimes get completely different conclusions and theorems.

I think this is one of the main problems of meditating without guidance, and why it's so important for monks to have a master and a sangha (community). Meditation isn't about self-indulgence or self-alienation, it's about developing true consciousness and attention. Without any guidance, it can turn into a mere analgesic exercise. Another toy for the ego, which turns from emotions of rejection and obsession into equally unhealthy indifference. This is why meditating in groups/communities is important, so as to not lose track of the fact that we are not singular beings separated from everything and everyone that surrounds us, as a matter of fact, there is no real separation. The separation is a product of our imagination. This is what Buddhism teaches at least.

This video makes sense of so much for me because I literally told my therapist a week ago that my biggest struggle in life right now is that I feel a sense of apathy towards everything because there’s nothing I really desire intensely. I’ve been working on myself, my mental health and meditating for almost 3 years now. I was fresh out of an abusive narc relationship trying to find my identity again and put my life back together. Because of the apathy now, I was under the impression that it meant there was something wrong with me, turns out I’m right where I need to be. I even tried explaining to my therapist that it’s not like a bad apathy, I don’t hate my life and I’m not depressed or anything like that, I just don’t really care about what I do either way because regardless I’ll be fine and I just feel content with how I am. If anything, I want to try a relationship again, the healthy way, and see where it takes me.

By getting more enlightened and emotionally capable the desires decreased naturally and artificially devaluating them stopped and I became more capable to appreciate things for what they are. The trouble is nothing is worth the price of being alive every day. The satisfaction of any action is whole and true, but small far too small. Being alive is an annoying task. The bad thing is not working and going to gym, the very need to get off bed (staying in bed even worse) is already an obligation I'd like to not have

If our societal structures and belief systems were conducive to human happiness, our children were raised in safety, our language contained the adequate tools to describe more of the emotional human experience, then we would all, naturally, be enlightened. But we live in a world run by profit, and our children know existential fear from a young age while never learning the necessary tools to make sense of themselves let alone the world around them. This is how you make widespread societal change, by educating millions of young minds. Young minds who will use this knowledge to make the world a better place after we're gone. To go out and travel, have fun, explore, etc.... live the life I envision and want to try the experience, yet I just end up sitting around all day. 0 urgency so I don't do it. Then shame gets added ontop of that... since I'm not doing what "I" wants to do I feel bad that I'm not doing it and end up just sitting around more.... strange loop. You mention "deeper" meditation techniques and "gurus". That's been my struggle as well. I've recognized that I'm at a point and would like further guidance. Most "teachers" "gurus" I come across are just businesses and don't really "care" about me, it's about the money. I feel like I don't know where to find someone to guide/teach me. I want to learn what karma's I'm here for and what must be done. I feel like I've been struggling since I've been meditating for 5 years. Hearing you talk is the first time I feel like I've had someone talk about these ideas in a sensible way. Most "therapists" don't lean enough into the spiritual teachings, most spiritualists don't have enough of the "therapy"/"science"/"western mind". Your approach helps a lot. Thank you.

This is so fascinating. The longer I live the more apparent it becomes that balance is super important in nearly all aspects of life. Too much ego can be bad, but too much lack of ego almost turns into like a dissociative state, which is also bad. Desire is neither good nor bad, but too much turns it into an obsession which can make life difficult. Same thing for drugs, relationships, etc, etc. Good stuff!

Being an admirer and follower of Meditation, and Buddhist thinking, I have made a revelation that has made me much happier in life: Your goal should not be to remove "Desire," your goal should be to remove "Attachment." You should still strive to live your life, and experience the ups and downs, have goals, start your business, live your dream. But be detached from it, so success or failure doesn't move you at a fundamental level. If life is a movie, an ordinary person watches it, and confuses it for something real, and important. This is also why so many people take fandoms of games, movies and MMOs so seriously, because life is like a movie, or a game. You can take a game just as seriously as real life. To remove your Attachments in life is to realize that its just a game, or movie. You can still enjoy it, and participate in it, but you don't identify with it so strongly. Just as you would say to someone to not take a game so seriously, you should do the same thing with your life. A horror movie is far more bearable, and even entertaining once you know its a show, and aren't scared a monster is going to get you. The analogy isn't 100% perfect, but is fairly close if you believe in rebirth. To remove Desire, is to stop playing the game, or stop paying attention to the movie, and that can be quite depressing. However if you are trying to leave the cycle of rebirth... I can see where removing desire would be useful. Your immortal soul is like a person binge watching a cool show on Netflix, and each episode is a different lifetime on Earth. It's very hard to stop binge watching. But if you stop paying attention to the episodes, you may decide to stop watching the series.

Hey, love your videos, but as a physicist I have to say that saying "The laws of physics stop working at the quantum level" is an extremely inaccurate sentence. A correct sentence will be more like "Our understaing of the laws of physics according to classical physics theories stop working at the quantum level". On the quantum level(which roughly means "stuff that are very small", you got that right) we use an "updated" theories(that do not contradict the classical ones, btw) and these theories work really well. Sorry for nitpicking, its just that you have to be VERY careful when you talk about quantum mechanics because there are a lot of misconceptions about this and people think its this magical thing that we dont understand and we actually understand quite a lot nowadays.

If there’s a discontinuity in our understanding, and we have to switch to a different mode of thinking to understand something, then our understanding stops working at that point. @@matthewburger798 Classical theory consists of a heavily evidenced, principled, and systematic *particular* way of understanding physical phenomena, so you and the person you're responding to are saying the same thing. For example, a classical-theoretic perspective wouldn't have us *understand* what is going on in the quantum level. But we do understand it (well.. :P maybe).. through a new/different theoretical perspective. Thus, our understanding doesn't stop working (because we move on to a different theory to explain quantum phenomena, thereby understanding it), but we *can* say classical theory stops working (since its a particular way to try and understand a given phenomenon). This is despite how proven and principled and systematic it may have been, as it would then seem to be restricted to a particular domain/context/scope. Map is not the territory. All that jazz.

@@user-gh8wh3ur7q The prevailing models of the universe aren’t classical and quantum, they’re relativity and quantum mechanics. Relativity is built off of newtons mechanics and can explain everything they can. However at a certain point they are unable to accurately predict observations, thus quantum mechanics is used. However there are points of discontinuity between the two, where observation is inaccurate impractical or impossible, and where the two models give different answers. Because our understanding of the universe is a patchwork of these two models, there are bits where the seams don’t match up right, such as in the singularity of a black hole. It’s not that we don’t have math to describe the singularity, it’s that the math gives obviously incorrect/impossible answers. And worse yet, the wrong answers don’t even match each other. If the models you use to build your understanding disagree with each other, perhaps your understanding is incomplete, which means it stops working at certain points. This shouldn’t be a controversial statement.

@@matthewburger798 I accept your correction at the start, but I fail to see how the rest of what you said contradicts what I said. Yes. The limitations of our models and our understanding coincide in a very non-accidental fashion, hence why one would even expect a new model to improve our understanding? You've explained our "incomplete" understanding based on our inadequate models. So, it is fundamentally the models that are the problem, not our "understanding." You yourself said we'd just need an additional more encompassing or alternative model. "Understanding" just means being able to intuitively apprehend and also make meaning or sense of something. The fact that something may lead to contradictory or counterintuitive results doesn't mean we lack understanding of it. After all, you would not know that to be the case *unless* you understood it. So, ultimately, it comes down to the models. Unless you are suggesting it's sufficient for us to simply sort our minds out in some configuration in order to supersede the explanatory issues you mention (such as for the singularities and surfaces of black holes) rather than do actual experiments and other kinds of skill application.

The feeling of not caring if you get a tattoo or not for example becomes confused with not caring because of being detatched or emotionally blunted. Thank you for saying go and engage in life and experiment. Sounds right on. Curiosity is healing. Might be why we shell up when traumatized that curiosity gets a negative reinforcement with trauma. How I understand meditation is that it teaches you to not try and 'escape' any feeling. You simply learn to accept it for how it is and learn that every feeling serves a purpose. The ego also has a purpose, but it's times when it and the conscious mind wants to try and 'control' to feel more certainty and avoid pain where the majority of people fall short (including me). It's difficult to let go of an outcome because we're so used to desiring and attaching meaning to 3D things in the world. I personally don't want to give up 'wanting' things because it's a part of the human experience to desire and want, but rather give up the 'need' for certain outcomes or things in my life to feel content. For instance, I love my car, and if it were to break down and fail I'd of course feel sad and annoyed, but I don't 'need' my car to feel content, as at the end of the day it's just a material object. Just my thoughts and how I view reality. It's really interesting to hear about other people's perspectives on this topic!

Since I hate especially psychiatrists with a passion I was prepared to laugh at you, but within 5 mins you've said so many good things that I looked a bit into your other videos and subscribed. I do listen to your videos while gaming, not all of them are of interest for me, and sometimes I decide to take a break from digging into my mental health as I'm actually quite fine nowadays. One major complaint I've had about your videos were that the titles were so random: I would have to watch each videos to see what it's about, I think that has changed recently, or it's just coincidence. Another thing I noticed is that you're giving more and more self help advise and nowadays rarely say that one has to get a therapist, which I'm really grateful for, but is there a reason for it? But since you've also mentioned that you became a streamer and a youtuber to find out why people are getting addicted to games and/or what makes games addictive, which you seem to answer yourself every now and then when gaming addiction is coming up; What do you make of the experience of being a streamer and youtuber? Is it like you expected it to be, did you learn anything along the way, are you still trying to find the reasons and/or cure for gaming addiction? I would love to hear your view on the development of Heathly Gamer GG.

Although love would be stronger than the freedom I enjoy, the self sacrifice and responsibility would have made it equal. So instead of stressing about what I think should have happened I should chill and make the most of life. Now I will always make sure I'm with someone because I want to be with them. Strangest thing happened. I've been meditating for about a decade. First four years daily for avg 15min. Last 6 it's been on and off for at least 10min. But I'm very present and mindful (probably due to the first four years). About a month ago I took a VERY long transatlantic flight. I woke up during the flight and everything was off. People were treating me differently (like a king) and I felt completely detached from reality - indifferent would be best. I was convinced that the plane had crashed and I'm dead - either in a Vanilla Sky simulation or in heaven. (Whatever that means). This has persisted until now. I am more content, productive and happy than ever before. I hadn't meditated in the 4 months prior to the flight. Time is also standing still. My days are SUPER long - yet I'm working my ass off and working on my passions. Strange and great!

This is so pertinent right now. I've been meditating and listening to a lot of nondual/advaita vedanta material, and while it's peaceful, there is a sense that I'm getting lost in these things and missing out on the world. Or, even that I am isolating myself from the world due to burn out but I'm disguising it in a spiritual veneer. As someone who frequently gets pulled around by their emotions, learning to rest in the "I" is essential for me, but I am a man of extremes so I tend to go to the opposite side of being so overly latched on to my mind to the side where I am detached from it all. It's like I'm trying to experience the emptiness of death because life is too overwhelming. All I do Is work and then chill at home, doing the bare minimum to stay alive (sure, I see friends but mostly I'm alone listening to music, and even then I'm finding myself magnetically pulled into Pure Being. Almost as if my body is ready to die and nondual mediation is a way to satiate this without actually harming myself. Yet, am I helping myself or am I just sinking further into oblivion?

you seem in a similar position to mine... I am more of a "pendulum" person than a "balance" person. I have a hard time seeing things as two plates coexisting... I swing to both sides, one after the other, and the wisest I get, the calmer I get, the less extremes are the pendulum's swings, the goal being to be as close to the middle as possible with as less swinging as possible. But life is life, sometimes something will happen, or someone will come by, that will pull on one side of the pendulum, and I'll have to deal with the bigger swings again... I don't really have a solution for you, but maybe this analogy can help you figure out how you want to deal with your own situation.

I’d suggest exploring the world with that detached mindset. See if some things become more enjoyable. Making music comes to mind, to me it’s something that hits a deeper part of me and bypasses my ego, emotions, although I can only manage to stay in that state for max 30 minutes before emotions take over.

I actually gave up meditation a long time ago for reasons like this. I decided that at the point in my life where I was, I actually wanted to have wants and goals and desires. I just found life more boring without them. Maybe I will return to it though. Maybe it would be good to get closer to enlightenment at this point in my life.

Which is ironic because the busy/stressed you are the more crucial it is to find time for meditation. Havent watched the video yet, looking forward to hear Dr K's take.

Many great points here. We only have wisdom/knowledge through actual practice. Now I’m back in the world doing things and enjoying them much more with the observing self. And I see the lessons/karma behind each situation. Enlightenment is not about having enlightened thoughts vs unenlightened thoughts. Yes as you observe the grosser thoughts they become stripped away each time and more subtle. As long as you seem to be in a body, the ego continues its thoughts according to its patterns. Jeevan mukti is to be dis-identified from the thought stream. So the thoughts come but you don’t believe them or take them seriously. You are aligned in a different space that simply watches or observes all thoughts (sakshi, witness or observer of the mind). Being in the world (of thought) but not of it as Jesus taught. This awareness when it turns inward where it is not aware of any thoughts but only of itself, it dissolves the ego completely, the body, 5 senses, the world, people, everything disappears and only the Self (God) shines through and this is full enlightenment. Full enlightenment is for ALL because are all one and there is only God. So all the maya (multiplicity) ends and we are all one God in the end. That dissolution into the Self/God is being orchestrated so we first see the Leela of it all and then even the Leela disappears as there is only God- no world, time and space, no physical reality, no body. The ego, the false self has no purpose. The world is a projection of the ego (this world is a dream with dream logic, therefore these laws of physics can be broken), therefore it only has the purpose we give it. Advaita tells us the ego doesn’t exist so the world its projects also does not exist. It is a paradox because we seem to be here in this world and yet this is not our true reality as bodies. Our true reality is God/the Self/Turiya

Damn. I’ve consumed hundreds of hours of Ram Dass, Allan Watts and similar content and gone down the wellness and trauma recovery rabbit hole for a while. But what you did at minute 15 really helped to bring the concept of non attachment to life. What a blessing to live in a time when our scientific understanding of the brain is able to align and help us make sense of these amazing insights from ancient wisdom.

I'm very often in the "I" presence state, and I can tell you from my experience, it feels like I have the FREEDOM to do even the most practical things like working hard at my current job and developing my business for long hours! On the other hand, I, personally, see NIHILISM as an EXTREMELY POSITIVE and UPLIFTING thing - not something that makes me completely doubt the value of things in my 3 dimensional reality at all! It's not that I don't care about things anymore, I'm just more ENTERTAINED AND ENTHRALLED by the IDEA that my ATTENTION to any perspective I have of the world is COMPLETELY UP TO ME! If spirituality (or stoicism) is as bad as this person is making it, why would any practical person suggest to someone that they shouldn't stress about things they can't control even though this is something that is VERY COMMONLY SAID?
