In this video I make a simple, cheap, edge sanding jig for those older Festool sanders that aren’t compatible with Festool’s commercial edge sander 'positioning guide'. Enjoy!

    great work and an excellent, extremely useful jig for professionals and non-professionals alike. concept is of course adaptable to just about any sander out there. i prefer epoxy putty to polyesther resin-based filler for this sort of thing, as epoxy putty is not a fluid so you can press it into place and you wont have the compound flowing away. you can even square it in that step with the ability to micro-adjust and avoid shimming altogether

    Good job you made this video....I was just about to buy the edge guide too.....and my ETS 125 is a similar vintage to yours. I'm currently restoring a pair of weathered oak gates which are too big and heavy to take down, and coated in a gloopy oil finish. Sanding this off whilst up a ladder with the gates moving slightly is making it very difficult to keep the edges crisp....perhaps I'll have a go at making a version of this to fit my Rotex125!

    4 years ago I was painting lots and lots of mdf doors and had a similiar problem with the edges. It was my job and painted thousands of doors in about 3 years. I made a very similiar 90 degree jig to my mirka random orbit sander. I was so enthustiated with my invention that i made the sander fit with just a friction fit with the jig so it was easy to mount and demount. It worked great and was pretty happy with it. Still as the time went on and sanding continued, I noticed myself using less and less the jig and just freehanded the edges (22mm mdf). Basically the issue was just the thing you talked about in the credits. Normal people doesnt notice if the edges are slightly rounded or if it isnt perfect 90 degree. And yes it is true that with enough practise, you can freehand sand with pretty good results.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    Yeah, most of us free-hand sand miles of edging every year without one of these. But if you have a lot to do, or if you're knackered and you have a lot to do, or if you're getting on a bit and the arthritis doesn't let you grip so firmly any more etc.. etc.. 🤷‍♂️ 👍

    @@10MinuteWorkshop yeah you are right. I should have said also that I had to sand the faces too, so the mounting and demounting the jig 100 times a day just became a hassle. Even when it was super quick to do but still the continuous walking to table and picking up the jig, mounting it, sanding, demounting, walking to table to put it down. I think you get the idea 😁

    A nifty design Peter. I'd say that edge sanding [esp with dust hose hanging off the back] is fiddly enough at the best of times [even for a pro]. When you've a lot to do, this must take some of the stress out of the job. With every penny spent of the tool itself - add-ons can be a kick in the wallet that's just not funny. Its like that square attatchment for the tracksaw rail - the device is an excellent addition to the kit but its rather outta reach of DIYers. Your economic solution there was a godsend to us 'skint' mere-mortals. Thanks for all the content Peter, I look forward to seeing what you make now you're more, 'off the leash'!

    That’s very nicely done Peter. Of course as with all things there is the ‘so what’ position and the ‘never needed one before’ statements, but I thing the jig offers other advantages over and above its primary purpose of accurate edge sanding that prevents damage to corners. The other advantage that cannot be overstated is ergonomics, especially on batch production where you could be spending hours on the edge sanding task. This jig is much easier on the hands than holding the sander itself and certainly for ‘older hands’ it will be a blessing. Any thoughts on product development? Maybe the angle setting facility or even a hose mast or perhaps even ritzier handles that incorporated rubber washers to further reduce vibration at the hands.🤔😉😀👍

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    Thanks Norman! Yes, I was thinking about us 'senior sanders' whose hands are perhaps a little less grippy than they used to be when I put it together! Excellent point about the corners too! I'm going to play with it a bit more and see if there are any other options I can include; very tempted to make one for a palm router, for horizontal routing, though that's more of a 'because I can' rather than any particular need! 😆👍

    funny - I have just been to a Festool retailer this week to have look at this edge sander - and in fact I was wondering why they haven't done this jig for their linear sander (DUPLEX LS) which I would have found more logic for edge sanding as it mimics what we do by hand-sanding. Any ideas ? I also don't have a Festool sander left over but pretty much like the idea of such a self build jig but I am wondering if there is one on the market which has some threads in it which would allow to directly screw some sort of guide rail to it. Maybe from the old days where the bodies of these machines were less ergonomic ?

This would lead to an empty fire or two until it would retract all the way and allow the strip to feed. Sometimes the driver would jam between the brad and the front of the nose.
