I Make a Custom Cardboard Box for Shipping

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Produced by Alexander Dyer
This is how I make a custom box for a typical home sewing machine.
Sewing machines are relatively heavy so I use a triple bottom and double walls.
I am using a recycled carton as a source for my cardboard.

    You can also build a custom box by using individual boards and gluing the sides together.

    I started selling on eBay and I wanted to save on shipping so I found your video. I must say that you saved me a lot of money :) I have made all my boxes, did not buy a single box. I love making them and I get so much joy making these boxes not only because it saves me money but the joy of making things with your own hands is something different. Thank you for the way you explain and for your videos.

    Yes double boxing it and styrophome and bubble wrap will protect it plus the plastic wrap protects it. The handlers toss and throw boxes. So it has to be padded a lot. I saw a pilot throw my machine after I asked him to take care of it. It was brutal.

  • @malgozata1875
    @malgozata18755 жыл бұрын

    I would have thought that a machine needed more padding so that if it was dropped, it would not break. so, when making measures, it would have needed to been already wrapped up in bubble wrap. I had to put the movie on slow to see some of the details. I loved the detail of the plastic knife and a ruler used to bend the cardboard box. That was a very useful idea. Yay! Thank you.

    This was not what I expected lol. For a sewing machine, I feel that having at least 3" of bubble wrap would be good for shipping 2 states or farther. Its good you reinforced the top and bottom, but I don't know if that double cardboard on the sides would take the hit for a thrown box. With that said, this Singer sewing machine looks very well built compared to the new ones now. If it was an as is/non collectors sewing machine, then this shipping method is perfect for a lower cost. But if it just works and whoever you shipped to received it in great condition, then there's no point in critiquing a job well done! :)

    Since this was more about the box than the actual packing of the machine I glossed over some of those steps in editing. You are correct in your inclination to include layers of protection and that is exactly what I do but I am inclined to use multiple materials, strategically placed trussing, hand compress Styrofoam fill, multiple layers of corrugated board, rigid foam, and a great deal of shrink wrap. Here is a better video of how I pack sewing machines. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGZhtJmhhqncXcY.html

    That is NOT going to withstand a 10-foot drop from the conveyor belt at the cargo handling department or those horrible baggage handlers who habitually hurl (huge/heavy) boxes and luggage, regardless of size, shape, label, or weight! It needs to be double or even triple boxed, with stiff styrofoam (taped like bandaging, and tied securely around each box), not mere paper/plastic bubble wrap/packing peanuts! Also, it needs a lot of protection at the base where all the precision mechanical parts are exposed!

  • @AlexanderDyer

    @AlexanderDyer

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi, Thanks for your comments. 10 foot falls are pure abuse and not much would survive that, not even your car. If you will watch again you will see that in fact I have double boxed this with triple floor. The peanuts are only one of the layers of protection and when it in slightly compressed it acts as an excellent shock absorber between the double wall box and the heavy paper and shrink wrapped machine. I have shipped many machines and my methods are sound. There may be more than one way to skin a cat.

    My machine came like this (in the first box) and it broke the case someone put it in...... DON"T DO THIS with a BERNINA with HARD CASE....... Do a better job by bubble wrapping it to death THEN put in a double box surrounded by TONS... (as in tightly packed) packing peanuts. That's the best way a machine has ever been shipped to me Make sure that the bubble wrap is BETWEEN the MACHINE and HARD CASE. Also make sure it is AROUND HARD CASE... paper just won't do. Unless you want the machine and the case to be crushed against one another.

    Doesn't seem cost effective. You could just find a slightly off sized box and use a little extra bubble wrap and be done. Waaaaay too much time involved in supply acquisition, prep, etc. The box should have been done on the opposite side as well so that the print doesn't show, should use bubble instead of paper since it increases weight significantly. However, it was impressive as a finished product.

    People who have off sized boxes to choose from are probably not watching such a video. They, like me, have more time than money and so do for themselves. I use lots of recycled material and bubble wrap is only one way to protect items. Bubble wrap is often misused to protect heavy items such as this sewing machine and if you or people like you save time and money but the recipient of the package receives a broken antique sewing machine, I don't think that is good. I choose to place the cardboard this way so that viewers could better see the lines I am making. We can both be right here. Just because something doesn't work for your situation does not mean it is wrong for everybody's situation. You are just one of 150,000. I am looking forward to the box making video you are going to make.

    I like the making of a custom box but I despise the wrapping. What's the whole purpose of wrapping it so extreme? It only makes the person receiving it annoyed to unwrap the whole damn thing. Not to mention it offsets the fact that you used a lot of materials that will go to waste, but then you're trying to recycle some old boxes lying around.

  • @AlexanderDyer

    Despise? That is a strong word Francis. The stretch wrap adds considerable strength and water resistance to the package and the person receiving it will be ecstatic to find their newly purchased item in pristine condition. Shipping companies are notoriously hard on packages and I go to great measures to ensure that my customers get what they paid for and that includes the stretch wrap.

    That's really debatable. Would you do the same to a $10 or $20 worth of item? I agree, maybe I neglect the fact about the more expensive and priceless items. But most of the time, anything otherwise, insurance would suffice or be more cost effective for the millions of packages that's being sent everyday.

    Francis Imperial you have obviously never tried to file a claim with a shipper! You almost never get a payout. I've had commercial shippers literally drop pallets off the backs of trucks with no consequences. All I got was an "oops my bad".

    Said the guy who mailed me a broken sewing machine. Too Much is an artificial construct really, it is like saying there is too much construction material in your house. Most of the material I am using is reused. Now if you want to use less material in your packaging then nothing you see here will preclude you from it.
