I made this knife sharpening jig
Ғылым және технология
Knifes are notoriously hard to sharpen well because of their curved cutting edge. It is difficult to hold them at a consistent angle on the sharpening stone and I often end up with a blade that is rounded over rather than razor sharp.
There are a lot of different designs for knife sharpening jigs but I wanted mine to be as simple as possible. I do not need a super accurate machine with a fancy complicated mechanism. For most purposes, a sanding block on a stick that runs through some guide hole works just fine. I gave mine five holes for different angles but I don't think I will even need all of them.
It works great - I don't even dare to put the knife I sharpened in the video back to the kitchen!

Brilliant. I watch videos where they rate a job as easy. And then they start using all kinds of specialized machinery that only a professional has. That is why I love these ideas that can be carried out with ingenuity and little physical means. All the best.

Use the stone
I made this yesterday, I replaced the many holes for a long groove in which a washer slides up and down and is fixed in any given angle by a butterfly bolt from behind. Works like a charm. Thanks!

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

interesting project, loved that drill press
I was waiting for you to use machine drill for drilling in metal. Snap me. That too with hand powered! And watching the hand planer was quite therapeutic. Very well executed. Thanks for sharing.
A nice setup and easy to build. I have my ouachita stones that have served me well for 40+ years and I'll stick with them. But for anyone having a hard time with the angles this is a good rig.
woooow that manual drillpress is amazing
I love it! Came up with a similar design made with considerably less serenity (more power tools). I love your style, and that manual drill press.

That, my friend looks awesome. I have knives that are 20 odd years old that have never been sharpened, only steeled. OK, but... I'm going to have to give this a try.

I need to make one of these, also!
Great video. I made this few years ago. I use some eye screws (eye hooks) instead of many holes. For clamping the knife, I plant a neodymium magnet on the base (flush with the surface). It hold the knife steadily and it's easier to flip each side of the knife while honing.

If you bevel your clamp tips, it'll give you more clearance at the lower angles and for narrower blades.

True. I have just been too lazy :)
Very nice job for sure, Howdy from Texas
I have a question, what about the angle? The arm of the sharpener moves in a circular movement. The blade would have to be curved aswell. If you have a knife that is straight, in the middle it will be fine but on both ends the edge is going to start to (sorry for my english) move upwards and take a lot more of the material. Is there a way to compensate for that?
@imadethischannel
2 жыл бұрын
Hey, good point. The whole thing is of course not perfect. But for relatively short blades it gives good results. I think the exact angle or small changes along the length are not as important a consistent honing angle.
Very cool project 👍👍👍🤘
Nice job, and works well.

this is virtually identical in design to a kit i bought for 15$ish 30 years ago. its a VERY common design for many manual sharpeners.

The concerning thing is now people pay 100, 300, even a thousand dollars for these machines. They all essentially do the same thing, so why someone would spend a grand on something like that I don't know.
Use canvas paper instead and wetsharpen . way more effective! Great jig. enjoyed the video!

You should not cut sandpaper with a pair of scissors, because it gets dull over time.
Good job
Класс!Без использования кучи станков,резки метала и сварки.Это можно попробовать сделать самому.
Excellent job, do you have a pdf download of construction, I am a beginner of wood construction.

Thanks! I don‘t have a plan for this. I made it all from scrap pieces I had lying around. The dimensions don‘t really matter. The only important thing is the height of the holes. You can construct them in the way shown in the video. Also, the exact angles are less important than the consistency you get from having a jig like this.
simples e eficiente...
