Well done! If you keep practicing, you will soon exceed 100 Joule. More importantly, you will be able to hit from longer distances even when using powerful bands. Anyway, thanks for the mega shoutout! I enjoyed our email exchange and I hope that you will be a slingshot fan forever (that stuff is addictive).

Slingshots have been used for centuries for a reason. I once heard of this guy who could tell you which small rock he'd hit, far away, and he did. His accuracy was phenomenal. He also could hit extremely well with a sling, using stones as ammo. He often hunted birds using that, hitting them in the head. This was back in the 80s in a country where such things were legal, but that may have changed since.

Slingshots have been used for _millenia._ It's earliest variant, the sling, is known to be used as far back as 10 000 BC. The Catapult is another variant of the slingshot, designed for larger projectiles, obviously.

  • @steelwasp9375

@@amodernalchemist432 You're probably not serious, but I must say. The sling has little to do with a slingshot, it's not a variant, it's operating principle is totally different. Slingshots are toys of modern times, at least allegedly. And when you say or hear catapult, you probably think of a mangonel, but in history "a catapult" mostly referred to trebuchets. Mangonels are impractical. They don't scale up, and you don't use siege engines on the field against foot soldiers anyway.

I think that David's slingshot wasn't rubber based, it probably was that round n round overhead with ropes instead of the rubbers. Those things have serious potential, I compared it with AK-47s when I was younger, and it gave it serious competition, it easily achieved 240 yards with lethal sizes, but obviously we were doing it just for fun as an afternoon activity, if one were to take it this seriously, I think we would have some serious slingpower.

Something I know from archery that probably works on this is pointing the slingshot to the sky, pulling the band back and then releasing it when you drop down towards the target. It allows you to use your back muscles to pull back the band easier. (DISCLAIMER: Don't do this if the area you're aiming at has people or someone's property on it.)

@@MikeShake you don't need to point up to the sky, its actually discouraged in archery due to the safety issues. You can start with both your hands just above your head, then bring them down to shoulder level. When you do it this way, naturally you'll be using your shoulder muscles. Alternatively, if you want to maintain your current method, the only thing you really need to change is thinking of the pulling action as a rotation instead of a pull. When you pull, you naturally use your triceps. Instead focus on the position of your elbow, and rotate it to be in alignment with your shoulders. Your body will then engage the back muscles instead.

Pro tip for when you're new to organic grinding. Draw on your part, the sections you want to remove. And start small. First cut, 5 mm line on the two faces where you have to remove material. Exactly like topography lines. And then you follow those two lines to take out the corner. Once you're done with that around the track, you draw the next ones, and repeat until you have the shape you want. It's... grind by numbers (like paint by numbers).

hey just a small tip about penetration. In the common ballistics industry, getting past armor or tough materials isn't about size or weight of the round and bigger does not always mean better. Armor piercing rounds are simply faster than the normal variation of that ammo caliber. If you do want something that can crack bone or penetrate as deep as possible, try using the smaller ammo with the larger bands or adding more bands. Larger ammo will only make the cavity caused by impact to be larger.

Not exactly how penetration works with firearms. Speed, with nothing more, does not equate to armor penetration. You want three things. A pointed projectile,. This is to insure that, on contact with armor, the force is focused on the smallest possible surface area. A fast round. This, as I'm sure you are aware, is to ensure the round passes through with enough force. Lastly, you want the round to have a hardened core. Usually, but not always, this is a hardened steel core. In more exotic rounds this could be tungsten or even depleted uranium.

also he's using all that protective gear (is that a bulletproof vest?) and no gloves! This looked scary to me, pulling that sling with bare fingers, had it suddenly detached from fork (or if fork suddenly broke) while stretched, it could make quite a mess. I understand the instinct to protect eyes, head and internal organs first, but hands are actually quite useful too, and I think by far more likely to get accidentally damaged.
