I made Sauron's Fortress into a MASSIVE Warhammer Diorama! | Lord of the Rings Dol Guldur [3]
Ойындар
The most detailed build I've ever attempted from Middle Earth! Check out the Kingdoms of Saxonia Kickstarter HERE: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
Today we continue the most mental speed-build I’ve ever attempted, as we create the Hill of Sorcery and fortress of Sauron the Necromancer, Dol Guldur. We’re talking dark dungeons, a filthy ruined castle, enough rusty metal to need a daily tetanus shot, the biggest spiders you’ve ever seen, undead wraiths who just don’t die, and the spookiest villain of all, the NECROMANCER. We of course all know the iconic silhouette of Dol Guldur from the Hobbit trilogy but it actually plays host to a massive siege during the War of the Ring and as such we’re be building a huge layout to fully encapsulate the entire location in tabletop form, from the spider infested forests of Mirkwood, through the foundations of cliff and stone, right up to the towering heights of the fortress itself. We’re going to need a lot of foam, a lot of plastic, and a lot of candy to get this done in a month. Halloween is coming to Middle Earth. If you’re pumped for spooky Sauron month, hit that subscribe button down below and strap in Zorptrons, we’re going to have some fun.

@@RTCFMO it looks amazing, though sadly I only own a resin printer with a small build plate and no space in my apartment for an FDM. Guessing it's too much of an ask for resin compatible version? I backed Neil from Real Terrain Hobbies kickstarter last year and I bet he wishes he'd never offered a version that required carving up all the stls into suitable sections.
I see, you have to finish this before the new Osgiliath terrain is released.
For the tower, the things that jump out to me is that the stone work is a little too clean and regular. The GW kit has lots of nicks and broken stone blocks rrather he clean and regular appearance of your technique for Gondor. The other thing is the diamond patterns and reinforcement metal bands that pepper the walls. An idea for those diamond patterns, maybe toothpicks or the blades from mini plastic cocktail swords.
@redwallmincraft33

This was the first thing I thought of as well. All the damage to the stone is concentrated at the top and really needs to be spread out through the piece.

Agreed, the kit has diagonal striation on the wall faces which øae a very noticeable difference.

Yup, same idea here. Some holes fallen out of the sides and other dents and missing bits would really help it feel like it fit, I think.
One of the best things about this project is you could play this board 100 times with each game being completely different. There's so many layers to it, and completely different gaming areas. You've smashed it mate. Utterly smashed it.

Smashed the glasses too lol This is an amazing board
Beautiful work Lochie. For my money, I think the reason that the Tower doesn't feel so cohesive is because it's way more intact than anywhere else in the build thus far. It just introduces some big broad flat shapes that don't really exist anywhere else. But the thing that really throws me off is the height. I know that that's the point, but I'm buggered if I know why it bothers me. That said, the second tower? The torture tower? Perfect. And that modular dungeon is GENIUS. I love it to bits. The detail you're able to extract from foam and resin is truly spectacular
Loving your videos as always man! For the tower, I think the reason it looks out of place is that it's too "complete", there isn't enough damage to the structure. The rest of the terrain has massive gaping holes everywhere, whereas that one looks too complete from the front (however, one of the back shots makes it look good because of the huge hole at the back of the tower). Would recommend adding some windows to the right of the balcony, and making a huge gaping hole part way down the stonework as well.

So fun to play in!
Unbelievably epic. For the tower and the rest of the build: torch brackets. Simple design, get a whole bunch 3d printed and slap them all over to tie it all together. The spiky bent metal style should be pretty doable in a print, helps clarify internal vs external walls and levels, plus adds the "lived in" look without going overboard and creating a hobbit hole!
You’re a madman Lachie! Man, just barely fit that into the car lol. What an absolute BEAST this board is and a beauty at that. I’ll be watching progress closely on this one👌
Awesome, love the Nectomancer's stronghold. This was the first build of yours I saw looking for inspiration for an AoS Soulblight Vampire city. I think adding some of those metal support beams meeting at sharp angles to the big tower would go a long way to making it blend in with the rest of the board.
It's really cool to see the Dol Guldur board progress again. And to help blend the tower I would add metal bars. You can see lots of metal bars on the GW kits.
I've been waiting for this build for so long. Thought the concept was abandoned. Considering the cohesion, looks like the kit has a lot of external "rebar" that is holding the structure together. The large foam pieces could use this treatment so it feels like it was built using same architectural technology.
Excellent choice for that extra balcony at 10:00
And I thought my storage situation was bad. Thanks for making me feel better about my vault!
What I would add to the tower is more cracks and patches using the spikey metal bands. This looks AMAZING and gives me the desire to build a board of my own.
BIG BATTERED BANNERS!! the tower has massive empty space adding a banner or two could show the age and add some nice layering
This is the most hype build you have ever done. And your builds are always pretty hype 😁🤘

Glad you enjoy it Timo!
My suggestion would be to add more metal bands to the stonework and remove some of the stonework. Carve out individual tiles and make the place look run down and "broken". The plastic kits already have this, but when you are carving the foam, I would suggest you keep in mind the idea that the fortress is old and held together with rusting iron and dark magic. Love the effect you have achieved so far, can't wait to see how you paint the damn thing!
After a long day of work honestly relaxing watching ya build one of my own favorite locations in all of Middle Earth. Hope ya move goes well and staying Tuned

Hehehehehe yeah Nevesy!!!
Try adding some vines and a tree growing out of the side of the tower. Like a sad little tree that grows out of the side of a cliff. Great video. Excited for the report on this set.
This project is so exiting and interesting to follow! Regarding the tower: as “R TM” says, it’s too clean. I would do some damage to the surface as well as holes in the structure. Also just like the kits, i think adding those odd metal bars as well as withered vines would be the perfect last details:) it’s coming out great and I can’t wait to see it in action!
Thats a pure cave of memorys man. Just increeeeeediibllleeeee
Dead looks trees growing up through the tower would be sick! Have an evil vine of tortured tree climbing thru
Love the stonework and the innerdungeon, For the tower i also made a dolguldur build, i was inspired by this wonderfull and i made my tower out of plastic kits. And i would recommend it due to the modularity of the kits.
Impressive indeed, can’t wait to see a battle report using this.
I think the tower needs the type of diagonal elements the GW terrain has, such as the braces, spikes, and vines, running over the masonry and breaking up its orthogonality.
Lauchie for the dungeon you could build a few removable ruin pieces that are only placed on when you are playing the dungeon
Such an inspiring project, I cannot wait to see it finished!
Super one Lachie, I shall catch up with your dol guldur build stream That tower needs some gibbets!
I think the easy solution to add more detail to that big tower would be to add vines growing up it. The hard solution would be to add metal panels to match the GW buildings (thats a lot more work).
Love your work Lachy! I think that big tower needs more damage, but I figure you saw that too. Loving seeing the progress :)
I have been longing for this another video on this build. Kick ass work as always! Extra bling for the wind is the way to go.
I love the amount of content this week Lachie, you have spoiled us :) Absolutely love this Dol Guldur build. The Kingdoms of Saxonia kickstarter looks wicked too!
I cannot wait to see this thing painted!
Another cracking video, Locky! Good luck with the big move! Xx
Get well soon Lachie! Loving this build so much.
awesome job, this Dol Guldur build is really looking epic, lots of progress man keep it up!
cant wait to see this finished, probably the project Im the most looking forward from the ones you have
Looks amazing. Hope you're feeling better now
Amazing work, as usual! 👏🏻
Without altering the silhouette of the tower itself, you could add some buttresses or blow some holes in the walls to break up the silhouette and make it look more skeletal and fragile rather than a monolith. The whole castle looks like its balanced on a tooth pick. The tower should also.
I’m excited to see what you do with the new terrain kits. Can’t wait to get my own!
What a week You have spoiled us with, love it. This Dol Guldur build s amazing. Really exited, and will follow eagerly.
This is genuinely inspiring stuff Lachie. Bravo man.
I always so excited with these projects

iv waited so long to see you continue this build! looking great. i think with the big tower adding some diagonal metal braces as you see on the plastic terrain to the front would add some more dimension to it and make it a little more cohesive. great work so far, cant wait to see the rest of the build.

This is beyond awesome! For the giant tower would more greebles, like arrows, spears or broken windows would help bring it more inline with GW's detailed bits? Love the channel and the stuff you guys make!
Ah, was wondering if this would make a return. One of my favorite builds to watch you do. Good stuff!
It's really taking shape now 👍
I’d try to emulate the cross crosses on the plastic/resin walls for the tall tower to make it blend 🙌
One word. EPIC! So good dude. Looks incredible. Love the way it looks so full of despair and it’s not even finished. I’d hate to get trapped there. 😂👍🏻
looks amazing, i think the tower what i personally would have done was break some holes into it, it looked so clean compared to the rest of the structures
Such an awesome project, keep it up bro!

Can't wait to see the finished product. For the big tower maybe you could have hanging cages mounted to the side?
@Zorpazorp
Жыл бұрын
Ooooh I like that!
Awesome. Can’t wait to see the forest. Keep up the LOTR content!
Awesome build. In terms of feedback on that first tower: it’s simply too big / chunky, the geometry is too plain for its size in comparison to the spindly, detailed, thinly walled ruins. I don’t thin further embellishing will do the trick… maybe cut out large chunks to make it look more ruined and precarious 👍🏻 kind of like the second tower.
Love the kit and scratch bashing going on here
For the big tower, a couple windows in line with the balcony would do a LOT for making it look more at home with the rest of the board (as well as jazz up the tower itself)
This build's amazing! you're an inspiration. I feel like you've given me a cold though?
Man I just love this channel, It's all I would like to do if I had the space and time to do.

Looking good! I'm finally getting through my backlog of miniatures and should soon be starting that company of Gondorian soldiers I promised you a very long time ago.
Glad to see it all coming along! The tower needs some iron support beams like the ones from your kit! Maybe add some roots too. College has been a pain the past months but now I finally have time to catch up with your videos and streams! The one with Alex from battlecamper was great to be painting along!! Cordially Miguel

Great suiggestion Miguel, and thanks for tuning in! I'll rope Alex into more streams soon!
Awesome project, can't wait for the finalized piece! As a small suggestion, those extra thick foam pieces forming the base of the castle could be formed into caverns. At least those facing forward, the most visible. Could integrate them to the dungeons below
maybe some vines or something falling from the top of the tower could help blend it in more
Zorp, it's your stone work on the tower, it doesn't match the plastic cells below. 👍
You're the only guy crazy enough to be in the midst of a move and still finishing up his insane terrain pieces lmao. Looks phenomenal though.
@Zorpazorp
Жыл бұрын
Tell me about it haha
i have waited so long and finally it continues with dol guldur
I think the tower could use some of the iron bands that keep the brocks together!
I think the tower will look more cohesive once its primed with the rtest, it may be standing out due to the foam rather than the level of detail
So awesome to see this project progressing again! I wonder whether iron banding on the brickwork of the tower is what’s needed to break up the uniformity? That, plus weathering and some vines would really help blend it in nicely? Can’t wait to see more of this build! :)
I think one of the things that separates the tower from the GW wall sections is the metal (iron?) barding all over the walls? Maybe try adding some stuff like that over the stonework :)
Triangular patterns in the walls will blend it
For the big tower, maybe break/carve out a few holes into the sides going up so that it looks a little more rickety, barely balanced on the stones below. Basically, just add(?) more damage to the tower. However, I think adding more doo-dads, like trees and vines going up the sides will do a lot towards bringing the hole piece together thematically
I'm thinking for the tower to add some of those hanging cages like you see in some of the lower levels. That and some vine detailing could look really good.
@Zorpazorp
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I liiiike that :)
This really makes me want to build Carn Dum, but I don't even know where to start
jeez. i think to tie the foam stonewaork in maybe cut up some plasticard or something thin to get that metal supports that are on the gw kits. i am referring to the little strips of metal used to hold the stones together.
Wow that storage unit is amazing really looking forward to a video sorting through that lol probably take you a week
Outstanding!
@Zorpazorp
Жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly!
Absolutely fantastic. I love the tower and I think with added iron work and vines it will blend in great. Maybe the only thing as to why it doesn't feel right to you is it's too intact? I personally don't remember seeing any length of wall being that long without wholes and cracks in the brickwork. But honestly I love it
Looks great 👍🏼 How about some metal strips bolted into the wall to reinforce it? Like what you get on old buildings? You could also remove some foam bricks as damage and replace with vines, roots and crumbled masonry.
Looking so good! I'd say for that tower the large empty plane of the tower next to the plane with the balcony is an issue. Maybe add some windows if that's appropriate for the setting? Or maybe just some vines and some pointy bits coming out of the wall
Damn it Lochlan, this build is so beautiful. It is a shame that GW terrain is so expensive.
