    It's so easy to forget that Jacob is colourblind when he busts out works that, even as he says he's not confident, are amazingly executed. Jacob is overcoming a bigger hurdle than most visually capable artists, and rocking it.

  • @elvinfp

    @elvinfp

    Жыл бұрын

    Omg, I always forget that Jacob is red-green colorblind! Judging by his art, the colorblindness seems not to hold him back at all, but I do wonder now about his mental process for color picking and how he feels about his color choices, if he second-guesses himself a lot or not. He's talked a bit about it before, but I swear, even then, it's hard to believe that Jacob isn't working with the same visual palette as the rest of the crew.

  • @MercurialJester

    @MercurialJester

    Жыл бұрын

    @@elvinfp As I said, it's super easy to forget simply because Jacob's just a talented dude, and just gets the job done. I think in the episode where they drew in shades of red, he talked about it, and it's mostly knowing where the colours are on the wheel, and then playing with values if needing a particular tone. But since it's such second nature to him now, we barely blink as there's no hint that he's working with a reduced palette at all. The average person stumbling over a Jacob art would never know, and I think that's really cool.

    So, about at the 9:35 mark, Julia says "It's hard to work on something you don't have a lot of confidence in" and, I literally just today finished a big project for my PhD that I struggled with so much and did a lot of procrastinating on, and just that phrase (and Jacob's follow up about knowing you'll probably mess up at some point) oddly hit so hard. In a comforting way. This is just a very long way to say how I have now found a phrase/logical thinking pathway that will probably help me a lot when I'm struggling with work. It was unexpected, and I'm definitely watching when I should be sleeping, but it is actually really comforting to think about.

    I kind of love this format with one week of practice / talking about learning things. This feels like a super good way to combine entertainment and learning. Also I started writing this during the last drawing finishing and now you all are talking about how I should comment. It is a very meta and surreal experience. I'd love to see you all do something like "I added 1 concept from Bob Ross to my paintings each day this week, THE FINAL RESULT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE"

    I've been in an art funk for months. Every time I feel like I want to do something, I suddenly remember how many artists are "better" than me and I just stop. I try and remind myself everyone has their own styles, and practice really is everything, but it is just so hard to find the will sometimes.

    I guess my best tip is to just draw bodies without expecting a masterpiece and following the motto of "kill your art"... I'm by no means the greatest anatomy artist, but im slowly improving. And i gotta tell you, drawing shitty drawings is the best way to do so. Sometimes even try and experiment with trying to draw somebody with your left hand or right hand, with your eyes closed, without looking at the paper.... Just to draw for fun and also study people that are more experienced in what you wanna improve... Hope it helps, and we are all taking it one step at the time and doing hard things we are kinda scared (for me, its also backgrounds) Good luck!

    22:00 "where should i apply texture" an art teacher mentioned once that "all texture put in the places with the least contrast in value will be lost, so ONLY WASTE YOUR TIME WITH IT IN KEY PARTS WHERE THE EYE IS DRAWN TO THE LIGHT AND DARK CONTRAST" and he changed my life. So in the case of jacobs exercise here it should have heavy texture on the light road marks against the dark ground and then later on the dark tree branches next to the light fog. The rest the eye is not gonna register or care about.

    This has actually been one of my favourit videos you made in quite a while. I love your speed draw episodes in general, because they show so much more progression in a short time. I am really happy with your decision to give entire episodes to one person, because I feel like it gives you more time to explore a single thing in detail without the pressure to not take away time from others. I think this shouldn't be the standard for all videos, but the frequence of those videos you have right now is nice. It is always great to see you guys challanging yourselfe to improve and doing 7 images in one video allowed you to explore the topic from many different angles. For me this has been all good things coming together... and getting away from technical reasons the backgrounds you drew looked beatifull as well! Great work! I would really like to see something like this again in the future.
