I Made Myself Blind: Living With BIID

I Made Myself Blind: Living With BIID
SUBSCRIBE to the Barcroft network: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
FOR most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, USA, has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled. Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes. As a young child she would spend hours staring at the sun in a bid to damage her eyes, acquiring her first white cane aged 18 and becoming fully fluent in braille by the age of 20. Tired of being secretive due to the stigma surrounding the condition, Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help.

    @Sgrp270 Hmm, so it's the same like with guys who want to become a girl, they just remove a 3rd leg growing on them because they feel it doesn't belong to them and they should be born as a girl. Just like this woman thinks she should've been born blind. But what's interesting, why one is legal but the other not?

    But every single day many gender affirming psychologists are endorsing such behaviors and instead of tackling and addressing the dysphoria that people are facing, they are rather just prescribing surgeries and hormone therapies. This is pretty commonplace, so why not do the same for BIID?

    In my view she should, she's clearly mentally ill. But yes, that shrink needs serious consequences. I'm sure in his mind he thought he was helping her, I'm familiar with stories like this, but I don't know if I've heard of mental health professionals agreeing to participate before. He must have realized he was at high risk of losing his license at the minimum, by doing so. I have compassion for her, I'm not angry about it, I just regret she felt this uncontrollable desire to do what she did. I don't know if there was any treatment that would have worked to change her mindset. I understand people's reaction to this, but this kind of situation is extraordinarily rare. Im fine with her getting SSI or SSDI for it, even though she did it to herself in this supremely odd case. This is just a sad situation all the way around. I know she feels "happier" now, and I believe that she is. It's just an extremely rare, bizarre, and poorly understood phenomenon.

    You are absolutely correct in your statements! I knew a young woman who tried to get disability, due to mental illness. She was denied. She had a club foot, but was entirely mobile. She found a doctor that did an amputation, below the knee. It was an ELECTIVE surgery, at 27 yrs old. She had been told that, later in life, she might have to have another corrective surgery. Guess who now gets disability... Be blessed, Rebecca, today and always!

    I'm super late to this video but I just remembered it out of the blue and decided to rewatch it and comment about my own experiences with sight, because my god this actually makes me so upset now. I was born with really messed up eyes. I'm legally blind with glasses and totally blind in my right eye. I have chronic eye pain and straining my eyes just to experience the world is a daily thing, but the most painful realization I've ever had to come to is knowing it's going to get worse. I know that one day this is going to be gone. I didn't confront that for the first 14 years of my life even though I knew, I was in denial, but ever since I confronted that I've developed so much anxiety about my sight. It's this cycle over and over again of being convinced that something's wrong, and this is clearly the sign that total blindness is just moments away. It'll be like that until the day it's gone, so seeing this woman willingly throw away something I desperately wish I had: stable, clear eyesight. That upsets me, and clearly upsets not only people from the blind community but the BIID community too. Really disturbing to watch this lady take away what I consider a privilege, and watch everyone be cool with it. This woman needed some actual help, not the clowns in this that enabled her beyond return.

  • @LaraAlmeidaR

    @LaraAlmeidaR

    Жыл бұрын

    While I completely understand and acknowledge your pain, it will make you feel better if you think that it literally changes nothing about your eyesight the fact that this woman had a mental illness that made her brain not recognize her eyesight as her own and she decided to take it away. Although you feel the desire to compare, there’s no correlation between her case and yours. I know you wanted to see forever, but she didn’t. The same dying desire you have to see, she had for not seeing. It sounds insane, and it does because it is. This out of insanity. She has a MENTAL ILLNESS! She can’t help it. It would be great if we could switch positions to obtain what people don’t want. It would be great for people who can’t conceive and desperately want to to switch places with someone who can but chose not to. But that’s not real life. Thus nobody is judging those who decided to not have kids. Because it changes nothing in the lives of those who are unable to have! This woman’s case is even worse, though, since it stems from a very peculiar disorder that she surely didn’t choose to be born with.

She’s self harming, I don’t think she’s thinking logically or thinking about other people in that moment. I can't believe it, between the ages of 8 and maybe 11 I was so so afraid that I'd turn blind someday, and it's so uncomfortable for me to listen to what this woman did to herself. I get that she is sick, but it doesn't mean that she should get more 'sick' to treat it. If putting drain cleaner in my eyes would somehow cure my OCD, I still wouldn't do it, and that's the line between having a condition and being unable to think straight.

    Truly builds this videos as positive. They show clips how her talking about her life is better, they use a psychologist that says people should do it if it makes them happy. They use her friend that call her an inspiration. They have her blind friends say that there is no resentment. Then, at the end of the video, they quickly say that people shouldn’t do it. This video may encourage people to do something similar to themselves instead of seeking help. Despicable. I hope Truly will pay for the damage this video will cause.

    +jeff deers Wow, you are beyond ignorant. Don't assume you know everything about the blind community from watching one video of someone who does not represent what being blind is. I have a disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, my gene deformity is Tulp1. I've been going to SickKids Hospital every since I was 6 months old. I'd really love to hear what you think "looking blind" is? In answering this, try not to fill it with stereotypes like "closed eyes" or "glassy / hazed eyes" - yes, SOME blind people look that way, but majority of us don't, especially when you've lost vision later in life. I was sighted for 14 years, I'm not just going to randomly start closing my eyes now, my bodies instinct is to keep them open and look around, even if I'm not seeing anything. I can tell you that as a person who is blind, the LAST thing we want in life is sympathy. I want others to understand what I go through on a daily basis and respect me for it, but no, I do not want your sympathy or pity. At 21 I live a successful and fulfilling life. I've written a book, I host a TV show, I travel the world as a motivational speaker. I've worked with people like Macklemore, Demi Lovato, Magic Johnson, Martin Luther King III, and companies like MTV, Dove and Clean and Clear. I write blogs and make KZread videos to continue to educate the world on what living with a disability is really like, and how people that it doesn't have to stop you from living a "normal" happy life. Try educating yourself before making a rude and judgment comment.

I’ve been blind since the age of 15 months, so being blind isn’t nearly as bad as someone who has lost their vision later in life. However, you don’t in anyway make yourself blind. The one thing I don’t like about being blind, is not being able to drive. This person would have to rely on others for all kinds of help. She’d have to learn things like braille,eascreen readers like jaws and so much more. I don’t know how this person would ever be happy again. But she DOES have a disorder. It's called Body Identity Integrity Disorder (BIID). It is psychological, and it is her disorder that caused her blindness. Kind of how other mental disorders can cause bodily harm, like how depression causes cutting or suicide. Yes, there is some choice involved, but it is a choice by someone who has lost self control due to mental illness.

    There is little scientific literature on this condition, but antidepressants and therapy don't work for BIID. The only cure is for that person to have their body part or function removed. To people with BIID, their particular body part or function feels foreign and causes significant distress. Based on limited data and patient experience, I think the psychologist has made the right decision here.
