I Have the Most Extreme Case of Tourette's | Living Differently

Ойын-сауық

Trevor is 17 and has one of the most extreme cases of Tourette’s in the world. His constant tics cause his body to violently jerk, twist and contort uncontrollably. We see how this impacts Trevor’s home and college life. No treatment has ever worked to stop his Tourette's, apart from a brief respite when he plays his guitar and piano. But there is hope with a new experimental brain surgery.

We have someone at my school who has Tourette's, in the beginning of high-school year they let him stand on stage and explain it to us, he told everyone if they see him screaming or having an attack just give him space and get a teacher or just anything else its normal so don't be rude about it, though luckily everyone at my school is pretty nice to him - he's got friends, girlfriend and everyone seemed to like him a lot. Though I feel bad for this kid tho... I wish it had been the same for them.

That is one of the things that the association encourages if they are comfortable. My whole family has some a spectrum of TS and my son who has the most obvious case taught his 3rd grade class about it. Other options are to have a youth ambassador from the Tourette association give a talk to school while not necessarily referencing the person who has TS.

the only reason the comment section is so full of "aww i wanna be his friend!!" is because people can say that to make themselves feel good because in real life they'd keep their distance. it's complicated for people to associate with someone who's seen as a "weirdo" or "creep". there's plenty of people with physical deformities and psychological conditions that don't get to have their story and personality covered by a viral documentary that none of u would approach to get to know them. it's sad but it's true

He wears a GoPro and it is hard to believe someone lives like that, but he does. The video was heavily edited. His Tourette's are much more aggressive in person, especially when he is nervous. He is as amazing as he seems and is very upbeat. I remember when he was yound and was in school for a little over a year and the kids would call him diseased. Hey Trevor, even though this video is a few years old now, it just showed up on my feed. I just wanted to say how much I hope the treatment helped. I'm 40 years old, and when I was a teenager, *I* was listed as one of the worst cases of tourettes ever recorded. I also went through the hell of multiple medications and nothing worked. I also was extremely bullied (nowadays people would be arrested for what they did to me), and had few friends. But, like you, I also found solace and relief through music. Now my tics are much better, but it's still a part of everyday life. So I just wanted to let you know, from a 40 year old lady who's been through it too, there are people out there who understand. Keep up the music, and I wish you the best of luck on both your treatment, and other life goals.

It's momentary and often only temporary. There is a key to it though, being that the source of Tourette is in the frontal lobe and when you are engaged in something that takes your focus you can sometimes find refuge from the tics. However, extreme emotions in either direction can make tics worse. So it's not just things you love, it's the focus. Too excited or too angry can cause 'tic attacks'. Another thing that makes it difficult is adhd is often comorbid with Tourette (also sourced in the frontal lobe) so focusing on things is hard, especially ones that don't have novelty. You may enjoy something but if you don't hit flow or focus in it, it may only distract the tics for a little while.

The theory is that playing an instrument occupies both your motor functions and the areas of the brain associated with creative thinking, kinda the same as writing or something like that, it requires imagination. I've always thought of it as intense music practice uses up the majority of the brain's "RAM".

Can I just say that I HUGELY appreciate how much screen time was given to Trevor himself, allowing him to tell his own story. So often with disability the focus is on the parents and how they feel about their child's condition, so this was refreshing.

  • @christophersmith4022

His mom and I were happy to let that be the focus of this story as well. I do not know how the editing would have been if Trevor was not articulate in his presentation of his condition. He graduated High School at 15 years old. So did his sister Olivia and his sister Savannah at 14 years old. We do not treat him like he has a disability and he doesn't live his life like he has one. As a parent, I am proud that he has the wisdom to see through so much of the stigmas out there about his condition. He is 19 years old now. He runs his own non-profit as he is finishing up his Sophomore year in college. Thanks for your comment. Proud Dad

Thanks for the good will. There just aren't enough cases like Trevors for the device manufacturers to pay the millions of dollars it takes to get FDA approval. The outcome is the insurance companies don't have to pay for something not FDA approved. Medical necessity or not. It was difficult watching him fall apart for years with no possibility of getting help that would eleviate the tics. We just didn't have $160,000 to pay for his surgery. We did get a large chunck of it donated by the Mayo Clinic eventually. That allowed us to make it affordable. Proud Dad and thanks for watching his story.

The second case I have heard of a person dealing with the tourettes syndrome where they both say "when I sing or play the guitar the tics go away",,,,, I think that's one of the best therapy with the people dealing with the condition,,,,MUSIC... 💯💯💯💯

Maybe because playing music instruments requires full focus and train your hand to do specific things. This is just imo tho. I never look it up.

we had a kid with tourettes in school, his was also very bad (also always ticcing in his entire body, not as much as Trevor tho). I dont get the bullying. He cant help it. My schoolmate was not bullied (even if some kids were mean to him, but they were literally mean to everyone). Trevor seems like such a nice person, he is very smart and kind is what im seeing. Also great at guitar!
