I Made My Own CoolBot!!!!! (For Under $50)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

ONE CAUTION....DO NOT USE A REGULAR LIGHT BULB...it will get too hot and destroy the AC temp sensor.
I made a refrigerator/AC controller out of a $30 cooling controller, a $10 lamp cord, and $5 LED bulb. To get the control we require I set the controller at 40`F, the differential at 2`F, and the AC at 78`F. For the size of Fridge we use a 5000 BTU AC unit.

This works great. I had a cooler top unit go out, and they wanted 1,500 to fix. I was able to do this for under 300 with this video.

You can add another inkbird insert the temperature probe in your fins turn it lower than your temperature and it will keep your fins defrosted .

I just did a very similar thing using a digital temperature controller. I just removed the dial that has the thermometer and replaced it with the temperature controller.

Really helpful concept. I am just being "retentive" here but that may not be a 60 watt bulb, but only 9 watts which is the equivalent of an old 60 watt resistance bulb. So the bulb only costs about 3 cents a day to leave on full time. Really nothing when compared to the A/C costs.

If it was me I would put the main temp sensor on the AC fins that way it would shut off b-4 it froze. Now I would assume you might want to adjust the temperature settings b/c it would run longer due to pulling in warm air through the fins where the temp sensor is located. Just find the sweet spot with the temp the numbers on the controller may say 45 degrees but inside will be 38 if that makes sense.

Exactly...use a 2nd controller and set it to 33 to monitor the temp of the fins. Use that to shut off the whole system. Telling you to leave the door open and make the system way less efficient as opposed to spending another $30...I don't get it. Nice job i did one the same way but not using a bulb to heat sensor just cut the wires on the sensor on the ac and join them and soo the ac tinks it all the time that is warm. And also a mechanical thermostat works ok. By the way watch alot of your videos today man and what can i say realy great ideas nice job just subcribed😁✌

Nowadays you can buy (single room) split unit heat pumps on ebay for as little as $400 (well, I didn't look today). It is not as cheap as an air conditioner, but many of them are rated to continue to pump heat down to an outside temperature as low as 0 degrees F. I wonder if that would make a unit that was immune to coil freezeup? If I tried it, I'd set it up backwards, with the outside unit inside the cooler (or to discharge air to the cooler). It would run in the defrost mode as required to keep the coils from freezing up, which would add heat to cooler, but my guess is that you could achieve lower temperatures, like down below freezing.

  • @farmerkeith

Stay tuned, I have a some exclusive content on how to prevent coil freeze up. As for heating in the Winter we just add a small Electric heater on a separate thermostat and it works great.

  • @socorromusic

You can do this without the lightbulb. The temperature probe is a thermistor (verify that by checking the parts list!) That’s a resistor who’s value changes with temperature. Cut the wires to it and measure its resistance at a warm temperature. Then solder an ordinary resistor of that value across the wires. Save the thermistor in case you ever want to use the unit normally.

I know your comment is a couple years old but if you are still following comments, could you please elaborate a little more and how to install the resistor you are mentioning? Well I can solder one in but where could I find one and would it have the values needed to maintain temps between 32 and 40 degrees?

Just grab yourself another one of those InkBird cooling sensors and plug the first one into the new one... set the temp at 32*F and put the probe of the new InkBird in the fins of the A/C... and now you have the redundancy that will shutoff the whole system if the fins freeze... no?

I was able to get an air conditioner to go from a max low of 65F to 58F just by taking the air conditoners sensor bulb out from the fins and put it off to the side and wrap it with foil .58F is what i need to store sweet potatoes .Thats all I did .Just got the acs tempratrure sensor from in front of the unit to the side and warped it in foil . Lot of differnce between 65F and 58F

Great idea but wouldn't it be cheaper to just repair the fridge to work as it was intended? I would be very interested to see how the ac lasts. I think this is a brilliant idea and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to give this a shot myself. I have a bunch of old ac units and I think it'll be pretty easy for me to find a fridge.

  • @farmerkeith

It might be, but if an individual or company is selling a $2500 fridge for $70 they probably had some one look at it and the cost to repair was not a feasible option. I have had mime running for 3 years with no issues using a 5 year old AC Unit.

@@farmerkeith very cool! Thanks for the info. I am a maintenance tech at an ice cream distribution company. So I have a lot of experience repairing freezers but It been forever since I worked anything that holds less than 50 lbs of refrigerant. If you don't mind me asking where did you find that fridge for $70. I really want to buy one now, lol. I can get really trashed ones for free but i'm looking for something that still has doors. I obviously don't mind dents and dings but I am trying to find something with most of the pieces attached. I picked up a True sandwich prep table for free but it had no doors and the pan chiller was missing. I had to scrap it because at that time the only place it could go is in my parents garage and they didn't want it, lol.
