IDK if this is already a thing but I think this video should be classified as Solder-Punk. Kinda like cyberpunk, but instead of combining various digital and cybernetic components in a haphazard way to create a punk aesthetic, it's the combination of analog and PCB elements in a punk way. I love it!

I think the Cyberpunk genre does cover jank but functional approach to technology like this. Technology is so prevalent and often discarded every aspiring techie can weld together junk to do whatever they want. They way James did it, with pliers, hot glue and duct tape, is very reminiscent of how William Gibson described the Rastafarian space station and the the Finn's tech in Neuromancer.

Fun fact those cheap screens usually have a step down converter to make the 12v into 5v. you could bypass it and then not need a step up converter at least for the screen

At first when I watched this video, I thought "Why not just use an emulator on ur phone it's 113646 times easeirrdrsrtaqstg", then, as I saw you take apart the SNES and turn it into a portable console, I realized that this is much more respectable and fun to do especially since it's real SNES hardware, so good job on making a console where you can play your game boy games on the go.

I see that you've taken a lot of inspiration or got some guidance from Wade. The camera looking down on a table with hands doing most of the talking, the random pet interlude at the end of the video, and you've even got the SNES equivalent to the ShrekPod. Feels a little empty without music but I'd say you got something going here!

Melting the plastic parts is called heat staking! Its used to permanently mount pcbs in plastic housings. Its cheaper and easier to automate then screws, which is why its used. Easiest way to remove them is to heat up the plastic with a heat gun/hot air soldering iron and pry up on the board (gently) Source: i used to be a service engineer for products that use heat staking

I’ve never seen this channel and saw the thumbnail and thought “what garbage is this” but this has been more entertaining and informing for electronics than most “clean” builds. This is close to real hobbying. Not the thousands of dollar manufacturing you see in other channels.

there's also a parallel in that one respects technology (if you can call a nugget technology) and gets it to work by prayer and commitment and the other tears technology apart and forces it to stay alive and do his bidding
The absolute balls on James to make this his first video, knowing it will make the hardcore SNES fans seethe with rage is why I'm subbing
I love how he clearly knows exactly what he is doing since he didn't run into any issues from removing parts the way he was, so he clearly knows the best ways to do something like this, but instead he chose to wrap the whole thing in duct tape and call it a day

The way you just tore the thing apart and then taped the whole thing together, leaving the circuitry the only form of stress-relief... This is my new favourite channel.
I've always been afraid of accidentally destroying computer components by touching them in the wrong way. James, your channel has some how just obliterated my fear because I don't think I can ever do what you do here. AND IT WORKS. IDK if this is already a thing but I think this video should be classified as Solder-Punk. Kinda like cyberpunk, but instead of combining various digital and cybernetic components in a haphazard way to create a punk aesthetic, it's the combination of analog and PCB elements in a punk way. I love it!

I think the Cyberpunk genre does cover jank but functional approach to technology like this. Technology is so prevalent and often discarded every aspiring techie can weld together junk to do whatever they want. They way James did it, with pliers, hot glue and duct tape, is very reminiscent of how William Gibson described the Rastafarian space station and the the Finn's tech in Neuromancer.
I’m genuinely surprised that no one has figured out how to play gameboy games with optimum portability. Until now.
James is singlehandedly keeping the hot glue and duct tape industry alive and thriving

This feels like a technical marvel and a crime against all that is good at the same time, I love it
It's such a art form of someone's understanding of what they are doing: If they are capable of fully succeeding while simultaneously not even worrying about "Anything u don't need to worry about!"

Fun fact those cheap screens usually have a step down converter to make the 12v into 5v. you could bypass it and then not need a step up converter at least for the screen
There's something immensely satisfying about seeing someone who obviously knows what he's doing and has the skill to do things properly just going full jenk and doing the kind of thing I would end up doing after trying to do it properly...

What I like about this... is I know it looks like you're being super rough with components and soldering and such... but really I like that you're showing that this stuff can be easy and for the most part durable. It's a well done video.
What i love about this is the confidence cutting things out cause you know so much about it that even if you fuck things up, it’s barely an inconvenience. I do the same with kitbash miniatures and creating concept art. Ive been doing it for so long that I don’t need to be much methodical about things, cut twice, never measure.

60% tape, 30% hot glue, 9.999% snes, 0.001% (?). Loved the vibe.
I've never seen someone literally attack sensitive components with such a Laissez-faire approach. It's like guerilla warfare on soldering and re-arranging of components. Keep up the good work!

At first when I watched this video, I thought "Why not just use an emulator on ur phone it's 113646 times easeirrdrsrtaqstg", then, as I saw you take apart the SNES and turn it into a portable console, I realized that this is much more respectable and fun to do especially since it's real SNES hardware, so good job on making a console where you can play your game boy games on the go.
Man after long enough it stops being horrifying and just becomes incredibly impressive. Like finding a car that should not have been road legal but with a jank fix or two is back in action.

I see that you've taken a lot of inspiration or got some guidance from Wade. The camera looking down on a table with hands doing most of the talking, the random pet interlude at the end of the video, and you've even got the SNES equivalent to the ShrekPod. Feels a little empty without music but I'd say you got something going here!

This is abomination combined with another level of engineering is amazing
Melting the plastic parts is called heat staking! Its used to permanently mount pcbs in plastic housings. Its cheaper and easier to automate then screws, which is why its used. Easiest way to remove them is to heat up the plastic with a heat gun/hot air soldering iron and pry up on the board (gently) Source: i used to be a service engineer for products that use heat staking

My old job was the final assembly of ECUs for brand new vehicles, and seeing the stark difference in how you handled this circuit board to how we were trained to handle them is honestly beautiful and horrifying. I kinda wanna send this to my old boss just to give him a heart attack lmao.

I usually watch people who mod consoles and stuff and they're super meticulous about making it clean and stuff, but how you were cutting PCB's and ripping stuff off the board caught me so off guard it made me laugh pretty hard. Awesome job!
