Explanation: if you put a part under a rocket engine like what Matt did in this video, the rocket won't move because the thrust goes nowhere, like pushing a car from the inside.

Each section of the "snake" needs slightly more thrust than the one below it. That will keep it straight and keep the lower stages from crashing into the upper stages and blowing the whole thing up.
@jarno_de_wit
Жыл бұрын
Really, only the top most section would need more thrust than the rest. This alone will be enough to keep the entire snake in tension, and thus prevent the into-self-crashing, although you would need to be somewhat careful with your launch sequence to make sure the tension doesn't change too rapidly.
@ArifRWinandar

Also, put the engines on the outside, because if it's on the inside, it's just going to push the parts below it.
In KSP, parts don't so much attach to each other as the parts fly in close formation together. More parts, more calculations of physics, more wiggle, more kraken.

I love your KSP videos RCE! so here, auick tips: - Enable " advanced tweakables" in the configuration menu so you can use autostrut for no rocket wobbliness (right click any part you have placed and hit autostrut: heaviest part) - You can put as many octogonal struts as you want in a fuel tank and strap engines to them, so you can have maybe 33 engines in the bottom of one big fuel tank

And hit it before ignition. Also struts between each major section and put some towers at the bottom to hold the weight.
Day 29 of asking RCE to play Scrap Mechanic
Thx for the daily uploads Bro. Your my favourite KZreadr with your Bridge- Reviews! So funny lol
To see if you have enough power you can click on the staging orange things and you'll see "TWR" if its above 1.00 you can take off !
KSP part attachment is functionally a tree -- every part has one "parent" part, but can have many "child" parts. So flipping over your tri-couplers does allow you to make it LOOK like the structure is connected to both tanks above it, but the tri-coupler will only ever attach to one part "above" it.
I think you should attach tower from one side (to not make a tunnel), but tower should attach to every section.
I hope to see you messing around on KSP2 when that comes out!
I've got about 2k hours in KSP and these vids are among my favorites. On a side note another game you might like is Satisfactory, you can build so many bridges in that game.
Whenever you say "booster" I hear "booshster" 🤣
Matt building at 150M: Three boosters, I'm not going to over do this. Also matt at 150M: I want it to be sensable.
I love how Matt considers Paddy his own breed
Hacia tiempo que no reía a carcajadas con un video. Todo se lo debo a la ingeniería
“I like to fly blind.” The one line that defines every KSP video that RCE has made.
I have an idea! When you start your snake make sure that the thrust is distributed from the top down. I mean so that the rocket on top always has more thrust than the one below it, but just by a small amount. If that all makes sense lol
@kelvin1316
Жыл бұрын
Still wouldn't work if the engines are inside. Effectively the thrust trying to push the rocket up is also pushing "down" on the top of the segment below. As someone else said, it is like trying to move a car forward while sitting in the rear seat and pushing on the drivers seat.
@brandonblanc2353
Жыл бұрын
That's a good point, I didn't think about that lol
To make a high and snake-like rocket you must distribute the weight downwards and the thrust upwards, meaning that the most weight is at the bottom and the most thrust is at the top. It doesn't need to be a big difference but you surely can't have the same of each at each end. You either have to put a little more thrust at the top than at the bottom (it has to be reduced gradually going down) or you have more weight at the bottom than at the top (also has to be reduced gradually but going up this time) otherwise the snake will fold on itself and go crazy instead of going straight up
As a fairly dedicated KSP player this video was amusing and horrifying in equal measure… I can’t even begin to imagine the chaos Matt would wreak in KSP2 (which incidentally is only a month away from early access release!)
@SephirothRyu

He will just architect it up I suspect. There is a reason he makes roads and not rockets. ...Hmm, where does he work? Just asking so I can... avoid any bridges in that region. Not saying I don't trust his building ability or anything but... yeah. Okay. I am.
Poor jebediah. Press F to pay respect.
Sorry for this. As an engineer, watching you build a spaceship makes me wonder why you're no longer an engineer.
@deeya
Жыл бұрын
Really? For me, it doesn't make me question why he's no longer a practicing engineer. Granted, its mechanical/propulsion/rocketry/etc engineering vs a civil engineering knowledge base. But understanding basic load distribution is like a prerequisite to most engineering fields. It's needed for bridges!... which casts suspicion to the validity of his bridge reviews.

0:10 is that rce? In 2nd video?
Would love to see a KSP Collab between Matt and Scott Manley where Matt builds a rocket and Scott explains all the reasons it doesn't work.
idk why I'm telling you this, because you're an engineer, but you need more thrust at the top than the bottom. You're effectively building a train. You don't push trains, you pull them.
Hey Matt, a few suggestions: First, you're putting floor below your engines, so your engines are basically doing nothing. To make them actually do work, they needs to be outside of your rockets. Second, putting engines in every segment of your worm isn't the most stable, I would put all my engines on the top segment, so that they basically drags the entire snake up. It's kinda like a noodle. A noodle can be lifted up but not pushed up cuz it will just bend over.
If this is really how Engineers do things... It actually explains a lot.
“This vector engine works too well. We need to change that.”
Rip jebidiah😞. Got flash backs to the dynamite incident in timberborners
“I’m sorry, I just realized I’ve been calling it a worm this whole. It’s a mega SNAKE not a worm.” 1 second later “Okay so the worm………” hahah
i love how he tries to use a vacuum engine at sea level, amd is surprized its thrust is too low
The mouth was pretty impressive. Some engines are meant to be used in vacuum only, such as the Poodle. If Vac. thrust is much higher than ASL thrust, then it is one of those engines. Changes made on platform/runway such as staging, max. thrust, break power, etc. will only apply to that one launch. They will not be saved when you revert to VAB/SPH. If you do those changes while in VAB/SPH, then they will be saved for any subsequent launch. You cannot attach boosters to two decouplers. Everything attaches only at one place/node (fuel ducts and struts are exceptions). Attach booster to decoupler slightly higher than the middle of the booster (so that the booster's top will be pushed away from the rocket when decoupled) and then strut both the top and the bottom of the booster.
Having launch towers on every side was just causing problems. It would work better to just have them on one side, but having a launch tower per segment, to minimize the stretching, could also help the snake work.
Someone should teach Matt about the symmetry button. Not me, but someone.

I love your kerbal videos so much, it just made a rough day so much better
You can turn on indestructible parts. You can adjust the throttle before any engines are active. You can turn engines on and off at will. More struts = Better (Usually). Put the stability towers in the same stage as the rockets. Max the throttle before staging
If you are going mods, go with the one that expends moving parts so you can just launch a folded up snake which on reaching orbit you unfold into not a snake, but the tentacle of the Kraken itself! (I may have done this)

Bro you should try nimby rails if you like trains BTW excellent videos👍👍
4:50 yeah technically (if you do an optimal flight) you could get this thing to orbit with all that ∆V... You need in theory only 3400m/s! 5:48 always control your stage Matt 6:55 that's because it's a Vacuum engine and on sea level it's not so good (hence you have only 800+m/s) 14:20 tip to see if it can get off: in the VAB just click on the stage in the right where there is/are the engine/s and look for TWR (it must be >1 to actually lift off)
7:42 Nedelin catastrophe, kerbalised
Pulling a Dark of the Moon Shockwave? I like it, very logical.
I’m shit at explaining things but I’ll give it a go: Multi-connecting parts don’t connect to more than one connection when placed, so triconnectors will only connect to the first part and then you have to connect something directly do it (snapped) otherwise you have to strut them together. Think of it as the game can only figure out parts in a line or diverging lines. Trying to connect the end of two lines together requires strutting.
RCE's KSP videos are an explanatory series about why the UK Space Agency has yet to put a flag on the moon
Your dog is an architect
