I made a HUGE mistake

Still Only 35c Issue 19 - I made a HUGE mistake on these CGC submissions.
Don't make the same mistake I did... ...on these mostly 2000AD magazine submissions; learn the pitfalls of submitted sight unseen and learn from a BIG mistake I made which resulted in CGC rejecting and returning books to me. Tip top : Don't submit any Progs over 129 to CGC; they don't fit in the slabs!

    Very excited when 2000AD came out originally, nearest thing to the American Comics I enjoyed at the time. I remember buying 10 copies of each from #1 to #10 (I did work in a newsagent at the time, week-end job) over the years I sold them, didn't get that much for them in comparison to now, wish I had kept a couple of #2's, lol! I believe I did collect them up to issue #700, can't remember why I stopped, probably space along with my other numerous collections!

    @@StillOnly35c I still remember the day in July 1984 when I sold (gave away really, with the prices today, 😥) my collection that went back to 1957. One of many books in that collection sells for more than I got for the entire collection! But it did give me a deposit on a flat and a car, so a silver lining of sorts!

    Good evening David. Nowq indeed you know all you need to know about submitting 2000ad to CGC. I am guessing low demand will preclude them intoducing new case sizes. The moulds would be too expensive to produce. Great show anyway. Cheers Al The Goldkeyfourcolorkidownunda

    I found this vid really interesting. Im UK based and have been in conversation with CGC about UK issue comics for years. They have assured me that they now take into account the inferior paper quality used in the UK , that they will also take into consideration that the vast majority of issues had newsagents delivery notes i.e. an address somewhere on the front of back cover and that a comic missing its free gift will still get a blue label but will have " distributed with xxxxxx not included" somewhere on the blue label. They will not slab comics with hard gifts, such as badges , toys etc so wouldnt punish the comic if those had been removed in order to get a grade. At the moment CGC will not budge on tape used to affix a free gift to the cover but I am arguing that as it was placed on the comic at source by the publisher it should be considered a publishing defect rather than the comic being downgraded . Also shameless plug Im selling the only graded copy of Starlord #3 CGC 9.2 with free gift. The series was the forerunner to 2000AD .

    Thanks for the detailed comment youtube.com/@richardwaddington2038, glad you found the video valuable and thanks for sharing your insights on CGC and UK issue comics! It's fascinating to hear about the considerations they take into account; appreciate your own feedback on some of these books and how CGC treat them. Given I've submitted and will be submitting more UK books, I'm certainly planning more videos like this to help out fellow collectors on how CGC handles UK books and free gifts to keep UK interested/based collectors updated. Additionally, I think you, I and youtube.com/@bronzeandmoderngods are on a CGC forum thread discussing this very topic in the hope to get some better clarity on how these books are considered by CGC. Oh, and good luck with selling that Starlord #3 (although worth noting 2000AD came first - Starlord was May 1978; 2000AD hit stands over a year beforehand in Feb 1977)

    @@StillOnly35c Hi and thanks for the info , always good to update my knowledge , I wonder why I was convinced StarLord came first ? My memory isnt what it was. Also I think I am correct in saying that a comic with tape on the cover currently cant get higher than an 8.0 but happy to be proved wrong in that.

    Glad you had a win overall David. I've never submitted comics for grading although I will drop a few off at our Aussie grader, HALO, when I'm in Qld. later this year. Considering that CGC will grade and encapsulate concert posters, you'd think they could source slabs for 2000AD suitable for both the original dimensions and the new measurements from #129 on.

    Thanks youtube.com/@charliedogg7683, it was certainly a mixed bag this submission, but lesson learned. I'm a CGC or CBCS guy myself, but good luck with the Halo submission. Let's hope someday, CGC increase the size of the magazine slabs to be able to grade those later 2000ADs.

  • @StillOnly35c

    @StillOnly35c

    Thanks Phil youtube.com/@philcamacho127. Found details on Paper Lift defiition in the The Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics (www.cgccomics.com/news/article/10586/cgc-guide-grading-comics-nelson/). According to the book, It is "the loss of paper and ink from a top surface of a cover, occuring whne the cover has stuck to anothersurface and pulled appart, or when a foriegn substance has stuck to the cover and was mechanically removed. Extensive paper lift most often occurs when a stack of comics is exposed to moisture, causing the covers to stick to each other. Localised paper lift usually involves the removal of a substance, a sticker, or glue remnants. Paper lift occuring from tape is classified as tape pull." Seems that the tape removal lead to the paper lift designation.

    What a great submission! Good advice about understanding the size of the comics/magazines we send in. Nice that you still got grader notes on the submissions they weren’t able to slab. I assume they charged you a rejection fee and didn’t assign a grade?

    Thanks kzread.info, I'm glad you found the advice helpful! It's always good to share experiences, good or bad as it helps inform others. On the rejected books, they obviously charged the cleaning and pressing, but they didn't charge me for the grading or a rejection fee in this case because unlike a pre-screen there is no information on sizes before submitting. And yes, there was no grade, just the grading notes.

    Just wondering how issue 1 gets a blue label without the space spinner? Do you send it in, and they send it back ? Also, shouldn't tape on the front be a manufacturers defect? Very informative video, unfortunately my 2000AD collection (I brought it from the very beginning as a Sci-Fi obsessed 11 year old) has vanished over the years, apart from a box of about 25 very low grade issues. 🙄

    Hi youtube.com/@2ndbestbob28, thanks for the comment. On the 2000AD Prog 1, yes, in my experience, they send back the space spinner seperated from the book and grade with tape as a defect. There is an ongoing discussion on the forums where we are asking CGC's position on tape is these instances as they were part of the manufactruring process (boards.cgccomics.com/topic/535495-real-ghostbusters-1-marvel-uk-manufactured-with-tape-on-cover-question/#comment-13195602).
