I Made a Game With No Controls
Play 48 Steps: badgamedevyt.itch.io/48-steps
For the GMTK Game Jam 2020, you had 48 hours to make a game under the theme "Out of Control", so I tried making a game where you loose control over the player. Here's how it went!

If you do ever revisit this, it'd be really cool if the character upon running out of actions turned to the camera with a big question mark above their head and started doing random things. Maybe every few inputs it would try to reach the exit to have a better chance of still being able to finish a level.

I really like this concept; however, I feel like there's little difference at present between "losing control" and the death mechanic. An interesting way to extend the idea would be to make it impossible to reach the door in 48 steps - however, there are mechanics such as physics/a rotating level/launcher/whatever that allow you to reach the door after having "lost control." That way, the player really has to strategize about where they run out of steps in order to win, and is imo more faithful to the "out of control" concept.

idea: conveyor belts, blocks (fill spike pit), springs (jump), fans (push the player). make all of them pushable. the idea is you uses 48 steps to set up a path, after 48 steps, you are out of control and the above element will guide u to the exit.

I think it could actually be cool if, by the end of the steps, some sort of wacky AI came into play. That would allow some stages to require the player to use all steps until a certain point the player knows the AI can beat the stage, otherwise, AI would just die on some stupid obstacle.

What means “lose all controls”? When I first heard about 48 steps mechanic, I thought after running out of steps the game would activate a random action after pressing any key, and if you’re lucky enough you can try to go ‘till the end of the level that way. Isn’t it? Or you just “die”?

Yeah, i feel like this idea could be polished a lot or enhanced further. Like conveyor belts that keep the character moving even after loosing all control. Maybe one level has you setting up all these elements away from a conveyor belt so that in tour final movement you just step in it.

You should make it so once the player is out of steps, an AI takes over. That way, there's still a chance to complete the level, but it's going to be a nail-biting thriller to watch and the player has no control over the outcome

God that game was so damn hard, I had to give up after reaching level 18. There were about 3-4 levels that took me 40-50 attempts to learn and beat. I've never played a step-based platformer, so it was a whole new control scheme to learn, having to plan and count how many taps to do for each jump rather than feeling it. Jump three taps. Jump one tap one dash. Interesting experience.

There should be a game where you play as a paralysis victim and a story plays out while the only thing you can do is talk to others. Thus, your out of control of your playthrough. It could be like a telltale game but all the paths leas to the same thing. That gives the player a sense of control but takes it away the second they realize all the paths converge

You know what would've been a cool idea for this jam? A game that doesn't just make your game feel out of control, but your computer as well. It would be a platformer where the main objective is to reach a goal. Pretty simple. However, soon after you start the game, platforms will start to disappear around you, and error message dialogues will appear in inconvenient places. However, these boxes will act as platforms in game, and they can be dragged around with your mouse. Some boxes will act as obstacles, while others might disappear after a short time. The story would be simple: A "virus" has infected your game, and it's trying to break the game enough to escape. This is causing platforms to disappear and errors to appear everywhere. You'll have to figure out how to beat the game despite all of this, or else your computer will be "infected." Levels will become harder as the game progresses, with more of the original world being corrupted and glitched as you progress. The final boss is the virus itself, which will use your own computer against you to stop you from defeating it. Popups will obscure your view, random notifications will appear, and eventually, your in-game mouse cursor will be rendered unusable, preventing you from flicking away incoming obstacles. Upon defeating the virus, its final move will be to delete the game itself.

@@Hayden427 but there clearly are controls, limited amount of moves is very normal in puzzle games.

There are particle creator programs you can download for free. Then you can paste the code into your game and it counts because you still designed the particles. It's like using photoshop vs paint.

That's a great and interesting game! Firstly I couldn't pass 2nd level, cause I didn't know (or didn't get) the mechanics. And then I read comments here and realised how it worked, so now I passed approximately 5 levels. I like mechanics of smashing buttons 3 or 4 times in a row XD And someday I'll continue playing!

FYI this game already exists for DOS, and it's called "Clyde's Adventure" from 1992.

I didn't even _try_ to make a game, because I didn't think I could. I honestly think you should be very proud.
