"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

*I don't feel like I'm "jumping the shark", I'm just doing what I've always done, build things. So maybe I just need to refocus the channel into what I'm doing anyway. What do you think?*

I think I subscribed to the little cabin build, loved the pizza oven project, the pond project, the sugar shack, the sawmill building, and the rest are what keep me looking forward to your next project. It looks like you answered your own question saying, you love to build, you've always done that. It's your channel, you get to do what you want, it's what you do. Maybe renaming to something along the lines of: Building for Modern Self Reliance by Kevin.... or something like that. PS. Your daughter is very fortunate to get a castle and a car before she is a teenager!

You should keep doing the builds of any kind. The channel isn't "Modern Off Grid" or "Modern Life In Hard Mode." It is "Modern Self Reliance". All of this work that you do is self reliance. It's way more work than the majority of us do. We are sitting at home, watching your videos on Saturdays, wishing we had your ambition. It inspires us to get out of the recliner and do something. However, I can't blame you for needing to do something else to earn a living.

Kevin, this is a potential million subscriber site. You have endless amount of content ideas ahead of you. Your videos are edited well, you accomplish a great deal in each video. They are not endless ramblings, they provide insightful ideas others can emulate. This channel is as beneficial as “This Old House”, or the guy who repaired others mistakes. Some create, others emulate. Some build with instructions, others build with creativity. You are one of the most creative content makers out there. So just keep going at your pace. Talking, joking, hosting Don and your brother and other family members. I’m a woman, highly outdoor creative, who started building at a young age. My first was a tee-pee out of broomsticks and sheets. I think I was 9 or 10. Later in life I helped my dad turn a potato chip truck into a camper, we took everywhere. You bring that back to me. Side Note: My husband, on the other hand, hasn’t got a creative bone in his body. Thank you for all you do. No matter what you call the site, you will continue to grow. Because of you. ❤

You're committed to being a steward of the land, and that is outstanding. You're willing to manage a forest which has been previously mismanaged. Favorite builds would have to be the shed for the mill, and the pond. Completely looking to sustain yourself and your family! I do like the outdoor firepit/kitchen as well, you demonstrate techniques and building ideas that I would have never conceived of. Not necessarily trick, totally functional. Love this channel and its variety!

Being a senior citizen and missing my chance to purchase and develop acreage in northern Ontario when I was much younger, watching you fulfill your dreams is allowing me to go back and experience through your achievements. Don’t let KZread pigeonhole you into a certain category. I’m sure whatever you set your mind to will be a success if not we can learn through the projects that you might fall short on. Whether it’s raising chickens, pig, ducks, processing meat, BBQ’s, smoking fish etc, maple syrup, eggs, building on your property with the raw material provided through the land you own, repurposing building materials discarded by others, etc. I like the way you solve the problems that come along with whatever you take on. Yours KZread releases by far is the favourite of my wife and myself. I hope you keep on taping and creating new adventures with Kevin whatever they may be.

My two cents. I’ve enjoyed all the projects because seeing different methods used may help me out in the future. Be it log building, recycled stuff building, etc, it all may come in handy one day. It will save me from experimenting myself. Also, I would definitely enjoy watching you do conventional renovation jobs. Especially bathrooms because I have an impending tub to shower project coming up, and I’ve never done one. I say just carry on, without a name change, because it’s all still self reliance.

I don't know about "theme" of a channel. And I think some channels try to overthink what people want and quality of video. I don't think anyone cares about any of that, your humor when doing anything and your wacky and cool builds are what's interesting. Don't be like "government " and screw up q good thing. I almost dismissed the notification this morning because I didn't recognize the name. Don't shoot yourself in the foot because of overthinking.

I am here for the builds- the crazy creativity, the buddies that help out (chatty Don) the problem solving, the repurposed materials. If you are getting into fun builds (love the rocket castle!) and art sculpture 🎉 - I am here for it!! Bring on the fun. Build idea: a heated outdoor kittycat refuge for your outdoor working cats to relax in between strenuous mouse population maintenance exercises. As for what I really enjoyed: the glasshouse (how is it doing now???) I love the weird shapes, unusual designs, but also the practicality of having a comfy sleeping place, a way to heat/cool the space, and clever use of usable space etc. Heck try your hand at multipurpose furniture design! Honestly, I'm from Virginia (near where Oliver Anthony lives), so I can relate to working in the woods.... but I also love the differences, working in the Canadian snow, the different trees, the "mud season" as you call it, the wood stoves everywhere. It's all interesting and great viewing and kind of cozy for lack of a better word. Please keep going (and remodeling a bathroom or building a house for someone would be fantastic)!

Been watching since your first video. I was in the planning stage of building my own cabin on my own off grid with my family. I turned to KZread for advice and you had one of the best cabin build videos on here. I stayed for the entertainment, the advice, Don, and the projects. I like to watch when I get back from my own place to see what Kevin was up to while I was building. I love seeing the updates on the buildings and how they’re holding up. Seems to me like your getting past the build phase and into the enjoyment phase. Maintenance is going to be a thing and I’d love to see it. Maybe other folks in your area want an off grid Kevin style. Maybe you find more KZreadrs to do cross over competitions with. I’d like to see more of how much use your getting out of the stuff you’ve built even if it’s not the focus. What’s in the root cellar? Do you do more than store fish food in the sauna? What was worth building and what wasn’t? How’s your work shop looking? Was there anything else that didn’t work and how did you make it right? In the mean time I’ll keep coming back to watch when I’m not building something myself.

Hi Kevin, I'm a retired rancher/oilfield worker from northern Alberta. Like many others I began watching Chris's channel then yours when it started. Having done years of similar not as interested in the homesteading aspect as in the builds, especially utilizing the recycle, repurpose, reuse aspect. Always getting new ideas or a better way to do it. So my vote is keep building with a chat occasionally

Please don't stop you come up with innovative builds and upcycle things that I would never dream you could use. Inflection comes for all of us and look at the community you have every Saturday morning I look forward to watching a new video. You have a sense of humor and make me chuckle. I can see if you need a break we all do but I hope we all get to see your creative builds along with your forestry practices. I hoped the castle was for your daughter and I hope to see the finished project. and would love to continue see you build, weld and homesteading if you find a burnout. Hi Rachel and Chris, and in the realm of youtube and outside of youtube I would want to be a friend and we build our friends up.

The recycling is what I truly love! Roofs from Fire Station doors, Saunas from those large drain pipes, gazebos from a grain elevator roof. Love seeing these things come together from either cheap or free junk, and turn it into something great

Maybe he could break up and do some things seasonally. I know I will like what he builds.

I like watching you build darn near anything. You always put your own unique point of view into whatever you build, which is what makes them all interesting. If that's building a house for someone, I'm sure, within building code, there is room for your own expression. The things that make your perspective unique are the things that add value to your builds. So keep up the great work!

I watch the channel because you are you. It doesn't matter what you build I like watching your process. I love the variety of random builds. I get excited every week to see what you come up with next. For me personally I subscribed for you being you. I wouldn't change a thing. Don't let anyone tell you what your channel should be. (If you build it they will come) By the way I live in Phoenix, Arizona USA in the desert so seeing how the other half lives is a great escape.

I love the builds. It’s your personality that sells the things you do. The builds are cool. Your imagination is part of the channel that appeals to me. The rocket build was and is cool. Modern self reliance is reliance in all things not just survival content. Tell your brother that we love the content and his editing is a keystone of the success as well. Thank you for all you do. Love it when your wife and daughter are on as well. Family cohesion is so important these days it is refreshing to see. Thank you!

I love your crazy ideas and how you figure out how to make it possible. Then coming back to patch stuff, or upgrading it. I might be the only one who enjoys your giving the history lessons while you build stuff like the spider hole, trench home, earthen home, etc.? Or when you explain stuff as you go. My favorites are usually the treehouse builds. But I watch them all. Sometimes I miss a few because it’s not showing up on my feed, then I see a KZread short, then I check your channel and catch won all the ones I missed. Or rewatch some to refresh my memory on your multipart projects.

It’s also great to see you use discarded materials turned into useful and functional items. That is truly MODERN SELF RELIANCE, isn’t it? That’s how it was for some folks back in the Great Depression, make things work and last. Also, you, Don, and Kris make the show. I love the humor. Matt from Maine

47 year old viewer from Norway here. So I've watched your channel since the start. I was a regular of the Wooded Beardsman, and my favorite videos from him were the cabin build and other build related videos. As a matter of fact, one of the first things I watched on youtube was the cabin build on your brothers channel while in the hospital. Then your channel came along with your fun and enjoyable peronality which really make the videos so great to watch. I love the fact that you build things, and explain your thoughts along the way. My take on it is that you can build "anything" you want, and I will watch it. Refurbush a bathrom, build a house, do your war builds, use your saw mill, have fun with your welding stuff and compete with Zack. Have you considered Patreon, Playeur and such? I would pay to watch you.

I would really like to see that.

Been here since almost the beginning. I watch everything you do. I find them all very interesting and fun! It’s my Saturday morning ritual. I do like the cabin builds better than the van or ball builds, but they were still fun! I’d totally love seeing bathroom renovations or anything to do with remodeling! I don’t think you need to change the name. Basically I think anything you do on the property fits the channel since you are being self reliant by doing it yourself. I’d like to see more over night videos of you enjoying the property too.
