I always tear up when I hear this song. The scene of him singing and his father breaking the jail and running to him, plus with this song, is just so touching. I was literally wiping tears in theater.

Renee Wang You and me both, girl! Ever since I had my son, kid's movies in particular evoke a very visceral reaction from me. I said it a comment above that I really like this studio for addressing subjects, like a father in jail, that Disney won't touch. It's because of moments like the one you're describing that I always find myself drawn to the non-Disney/Pixar animated movies and ultimately loving them.

Anyone else got goosebumps mid song when they saw Ash putting on lipstick getting ready to go out and perform? I can only remember a handful of times I was this excited in a movie... outstanding performances by all and that's an understatement

that moment when the lyrics said "and I'm still standing better than I ever did" and shows Ash using eyeshadows, fixing her hair(?) and shoes indicates that she gained her confidence and learned that she doesn't need her boyfriend to SING or live

I love that Illumination/Dreamworks tackles subjects that Disney/Pixar won't touch (like a father in jail). They always include such adult subtext in their movies that don't detract from the movie's wholesomeness.

😂 Imagine being the person who left Elton John before he was famous and then hearing this song and knowing it’s about you. The petty revenge is delicious and everything about this song is amazing. Taron’s voice makes it even better. Great soundtrack!
