In my case i noticed setting the mixture screws without the air cleaner compared to when it’s on makes a big difference, and I guess is because of the amount of air free flow in vs the restriction the air cleaner creates. Yep, 1982, had a pinto as my first car.., so no guts on the 1300cc four cyl. So I decided to go silly on the stereo system.., Cassette deck, twin Spark-o-matic Eq/boosters, 6 Jensen 6X9’s, plus 4 4” pioneer speakers.., power from the stock battery & charging system was lacking due to a 40a alternator.., I swapped in an alternator from a Lincoln continental 63a power good but turn on the stereo components & the engine would lug down below 400 rpm & die.., my father watching me struggle just grinned & said” just turn off the stereo at stop lights & it idles fine..,” I said “ Dad I wanna be able to crank up the music at the stop lights so everyone knows my music ROCKS! But stalling out is embarrassing..!” Again he grinned & reaches for his screwdriver, said “turn on your stereo but leave the volume low, don’t touch the gas pedal..,” well I knew the car would bog & die & started to object. “Just watch” he said.., as he manually raised the throttle & nodded to me to turn the stereo on.., the alternator started to bog the engine, he didn’t let it. He then upped the idle adjustment screw to a normal 750 or so rpm. Then stood back & proclaiming well when you aren’t playing with that damn music your idle will be higher & you will have to watch your clutch, & burn more gas but ain’t no free lunch when it comes to cars.., now go to the store & bring me back a six-pack..,” so I did & cranked that Van Halen all the way there & back, no bog, no stall, & I was the one grinning..!
